I've carry an axe everywhere and never used it. I live in South Carolina. My father has always carried one and my brothers and I do the same. I was taught, you'll never need it until you don't have it. So I would carry just in case.

One thing I carry and have placed in all of out vehicles is a NOCO Genius (there are other brands as well) battery bank jump charger. It's great for helping people out because you don't need to maneuver your truck to run cables and it also functions as a battery bank to recharge all of your other electronics up to and including laptops.

I keep a C.R.K.T. woods chogan In the jeep, which is a combination small forester axe and hammer. It's dual purpose and has come in handy in multiple situations. I also keep an E tool, a small compact folding shovel. They take up virtually no room and are both very handy. Having been stuck in both mud and snow on different occasions I can say with conviction that they are both extremely useful and have earned their place in the jeep.

I keep a shovel and axe in the bed of the truck. But, I have a small shovel, the russian one, and a boys axe. I use both when camping though, so, they get used. Up here in New England, you're better served with a chain saw for road debris. Or a bow saw at the very least. In the back seat of my truck (a tacoma), I fabbed some MOLLE panels out of something I ordered from Amazon. I bolted them to the plastic behind the rear seats (which fold down flat, and I keep them down), and have enough gear there for 72 hours. I usually have my dayhiking pack in there too, which I could, theoretically, live out of if needed :)

Well, I keep a shovel in case I get stuck in sand at home or snow in the mountains. I could also use it as a fire tool since I live in California and could use it to move dirt or create a line. I like a halogen over your fubar and always mate it with an axe. If it’s windy or I’m driving through woods fir sure I will through in a chainsaw, if not I depend on a sawzall or my silly big box/ axe

Great video. If you're trying to deal with a downed tree that has someone trapped in a car a far safer option is to use a saw. Using an axe would add dynamic force with every blow which could cause more property damage to the car and endanger anyone inside the vehicle. The Silky Big Boy or something similar would take up less space and be a better option.

Shovel...absolutely. I've used them numerous times in snowy conditions. But that's up north...so maybe not in southern texas, but in case you take a northbound road trip...keep that handy. As for the ax, nah...I do carry an estwing riggers axe. It's small has a hammer and an edge. General purpose camp tool..but more of a luxury for the most part.

Completely agreed about the smaller Axe or folding saw. Definitely good if you need to start a fire, for small logs, kindling etc. If you are considering a tree being down that you need to chop up, a portable chainsaw may be a more practical option, especially in a rescue situation. Regarding the shovel, I know you're in Texas but if you ever needed to bug out quickly and move to an area that receives snowfall that may prove helpful. Really enjoyed this video, thank you!

I'd add some quick traction gear. Hopefully that box has tire plug kits and temporarily sidewall repair. On long traveling I'll carry two sparses with me. Extra fuel would be good to have. I carry a little firewood as well. I should do a video on my truck set up. My truck is a little more on the extreme side but that's do to we're I live and what I do with my truck. But you have a great edc truck set up.

Love the video and again, I like how you look at things like why carry the shovel in urban Texas. I'm in Houston so I understand your thought process on it and I agree with you in the video, there's no need to carry a shovel or axe 100% of the time especially if you don't go mudding. I'd keep the mounts and not put anything in place of it so you CAN mount it when you go hunting, but I honestly think it's a waste of time to carry either in urban Texas. I'd carry a good collapsible saw in the general box before mounting an axe because like you said, the axe wouldn't be as quick as people think and could be especially dangerous with adrenaline pumping. Keep up the good work.

keep the shovel or replace with a E-tool. I can think of a few reasons starting with when you ditch the truck assuming there is time you can bury those extra preps nearby for later retrieval or dig in during a WROL to avoid stray projectiles. u said Texas so leave the axe and use a folding saw for firewood unless you need a second breaching tool...

SEMPER FI Brother, I agree with the majority here, keep the shovel. And add a haligan bar, also known as a firefighters entry tool. And add with it a good axe. Between the Stanley tool and the haligen bar, axe combination you can get into any damaged vehicle in an emergency situation. Also I'd add in a half-dozen road flares/fusees. They can always be used to start a fire in an emergency situation. SEMPER FIDELIS again, Gunny Reed

I live in dfw as well, in an older suburban neighborhood. I keep a cold steel trail boss in my truck, but since I’m in construction I usually have my dewalt sawzall with me as well. There’s been a few times during fall and winter that trees and branches have fallen in the road and those have helped out. But also realistically there’s usually another way around that’s faster than cutting it out of the way. I ended up cutting and moving them just to help out.

Nice kit. I like those triangles. And I like, that they are stored on the passenger side, where you normally do not have traffic passing by, so you stay relatively safe before you are able to put them up. Your Video reminded me, that I need to upgrade my kit, because I only have to at the moment. By the way: They are mandatory in Germany (or Europe) and really do the trick. I think the axe makes its way into so many kits, because if you picture an older army jeep, they had this. Or its rumors or they had it in the movies. And it looks cool. I live in a wooded area. I know how to use an axe. But I have no idea why I should have one in my car. A saw would be useful. But in the case of downed trees axes are really dangerous. Your Stanley tool is in my opinion more useful.

I agree that you will never need an axe until you don't have one. That's why I don't carry a full size axe with me. Instead I always have a boys axe in my truck. Not as small as a hatchet, yet not as large as a maul. However if I need to take care of a large tree, I can still do so with an axe that will fit on the side of my backpack easily. The shovel that I carry is a folding fire shovel with a square tip in case I have to use it as a maddock as well for trenching. I also carry two 30' truckers chains in my truck just in case.

When you have a problem with a small tree or branch you can better use a folding saw or one of this manual chain-saws. The same for medium "wood". When there´s a big wooden problem you better find another way around it. For a truck the best thing is a good winch.

That pry bar is good, but there is a reason firemen carry axes in their set up. Copy them. Like being armed: pray you never need it , but if you do need it, nothing else will do. We live in a remote area and any time we leave the homestead, we are always packed as if we may run into trouble. My delicate flower wife wondered why i always drove a 1ton 4x4. I told her that we have it, because one day it will save your life. One day it did. Some drunk, veered into her. Because of her good judgement and the mass of the truck it allowed her to survive a head on. She has her own 4x4 with crash bars and emergency gear, now

Personally, I’d say the axe would be a good shout. If you came across a vehicle that’s had a tree come down on it in a storm or something it could be pretty handy. I live in a pretty rural area in the UK, so both a shovel and an axe are handy vehicle carries. We have a lot of muddy, uneven back lanes where if you get stuck, a shower would be super handy! We have a lot of old trees falling down here too. Great to see your kit anyway! Keep the great content coming ✌️#BATTALION

Carry a coldsteel shovel. It is a axe n shovel combo.

Maybe pack the shovel in advance of another snowpacalypse like we had down here in Austin in February. Just to get out of my driveway I had to borrow a neighbor's shovel. And do you carry any tow straps/tow ropes/tow chains? Curious to know what folks are using that works best if you had to pull a vehicle out of ditch or something. Dig the setup, very well thought out!!!

Tow straps in my opinion are better Gustavo . In the cold if you don’t have gloves your fingers will hurt . I’ve used both , and I like the straps better , plus less weight.

When I had a working truck with a cargo box I had a 16" chainsaw along with a couple gallons of water a 2 person mess-kit and a coleman sportsman one-burner camp-stove along with some canned goods along with the normal stuff like tow chain, tire chains, repair tools oh I live in Oregon.

Funny, we have the same gear down to the eye pro and gloves accessible next to the breeching tool. 😂😂. As far as carrying the axe, why not ? I’m is south Florida, probably will never use it but I carry it. Better to have and not need then to need and not have. 🤷🏻‍♂️

swap your shovel with a smaller one so you still have it but add a folding saw

You said you would probably remove the shovel and axe because you don’t live in a area where you think it’s needed. But what if we were invaded and you had to bug out? Your moving towards the middle of the country where they could become necessary. My sgt. used to tell me keep whatever you can to stay alive just don’t let it slow you down. IMO it doesn’t look like an axe or shovel would add any drag but could save your life.

The shovel I would leave. Let's just say you go on a hunting trip and it starts to rain so you drive back and you get stuck. I would also throw a set of mattracks in there if your ever in the situation.

Funny. It’s the shovel and the shovel alone that’s saved my tail 95% of the time. The other 5% can be attributed to a good saw.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, I carry a Milwaukee electric chainsaw in the winter months when the storms are rolling through. Trees fall across the road all the time here.
