I agree but I try not to let it sound like this spot is as good as it really is. Make it sound too good and we will be surrounded by people. That has happened to me almost everywhere I ever lived. The public word is, it rains all the time, the termites eat the tires off your truck and the volcanoes, oh the volcanoes!

The downsides of Hawaii is the housing market and the fact that lithium ion batteries are hard to come by but everything uses lithium ion now days. Phones, some lighters, computers, EV all use lithium ion battery so none can be transported via plane. The other thing is like you said kind of hard to travel through water in a car. Hawaii may be well priced compared to LA but LA and Hawaii are out of control for rent or house ownership. In regards to the drought that is what the big issue has always been here in CO. I plan to save for the next 7-8 years to move east and my mother is debating moving east to where my sister is once I move out. Funnily one of the places you mentioned you have great memories with being TN is where I have looked into. No state tax and plenty of water.

Bill, I was wondering, in your opinion, where is the least wet, habitable area on the east side?

Habitable, that is a matter of opinion. The driest area of Puna is the south east shore and the strip on the south up to Volcanoes National Park. The rain in this area is half. Since it is pure lava, it is really dry. It is also one of the riskiest lava areas in Puna. Most people still there either rebuilt after the flows or just got lucky. Places that didn't get lava recently are quite nice. Way too strange, far away from stuff and risky for my tastes. I suspect mud, rats and mosquitoes are few and far between out on the flows.

I grew up in Coos Bay Oregon area, just a short distance from the ocean. Temperatures stayed about 50-65F all day, year round. A little too mild, could use more heat for my taste. Interesting how metal roofs seem so popular in the Hilo area with the corrosion.

We do not have an extensive public water system here. The pipes from County wells only follow the main roads and towns. I spent 8 grand running a pipe from the highway to get hooked. Since making wells here is next to impossible and extremely expensive, most people use the roof to catch rain water for the house. Painted metal is the best material for catchment, easy to clean, no gravel, no tar taste. Asphalt shingle is very heavy. Everything is shipped here. The metal comes in big rolls and is processed into roofing on Island. It is much lighter and cheaper per sq foot. Everything here has to be repainted about every 7 years, the roof is no exception. Alaska uses mostly steel roof too because of shipping.

I’m from Las Vegas, and Coos Bay is an excellent place to spend the summer. Beautiful, cool temps in July, and the fish is fresh! 🤙

@@Kinsington.Island It's quite pleasant weather there in the morning, but in the summer time, from about lunch time until evening, there's a strong breeze (20-25mph) that comes off the ocean and feels really chilly.

Everywhere has plusses and minuses. Climate is important, the pros seem to be worth the cons. Its funny because ive met one other person on the mainland that saw the appeal of the island the way I did. I figured everybody would, theres a nice calm lesson from the world. A lot of people love the 6 month winters here, I dont get it. Gotta be a milionaire or have a good back to survive the winter each year. I always prefer the wild places with heavy native culture and lots of artists, most people cant stand aliens. Its in our blood. Not for everyone.

I spent about half my life in freezing climates. I used to ice fish, ice skate, sled, X country ski and snow shoe. While living with winter I convinced myself it was enjoyable. What else can you do? After i got out of the ice for a few years I realized what a strain it had been on me. No interest in going back.

@@GreenGardenGuy1 paradise is indeed a state of mind but why not be somewhere you want to be? Its analogous to a bad relationship. Sure you can stay here and do this but if you're not thriving and satisfied with it after a certain point, why are you still doing it? I think most here are working off bad karma. You can see it in their faces in the wintertime. I realized that I've been roaming and I haven't found home yet. Its a pretty simple thing. Home is out there but this ain't it. Stranger in a strange land.
