Life Underwater - Coral Reef Seascape Acrylic Painting Tutorial

This is a full 2 hour acrylic painting tutorial, where I teach you how to paint this beautiful underwater coral reef seascape full of ocean wildlife! This painting will take you about 4 hours to complete, despite the video being shorter. I worked with a 24"x36" Artist's Loft brand "level 1" canvas and Liquitex Basics acrylic paints.
Colors Required: Burnt Umber, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue absolutely required. Any varieties of reds, pinks, oranges, greens, etc. that you have on hand. I used Quinacridone Magenta, Cadmium Red, Rex Oxide, Yellow Ochre, Mars Black, Unbleached Titanium White, Hooker's Green

My favorite painting! Absolutely love it ❤ Not sure what it's that I love so much - the colors/beauty but maybe also the "space"? The open space surrounded by not only the plants but the blue ocean with its depth maybe. Either way, I see why you painted it twice and the second time, on a larger canvas. What's surprising to me is that it's not as hard as I thought it was going to be - so far lol (I'm almost done) Maybe because I'm painting it on a larger canvas then what I'm used to...? But you definitely explain things clearly and show us at a pace that's not so overwhelming. Thank you so much for sharing such a gorgeous painting and allowing us to be a part of it. 😊

I am just starting out painting pictures (I've used acrylics for painting designs onto wooden things before). As a kid I LOVED painting colourful pictures with fish, and have decided to try it again (obviously, trying to be a little more sophisticated than when I was a child). Your tutorial is fabulous, and I am going to try painting this picture (with my own variations - I never make anything exactly the way the original was, on purpose, that even goes for cooking and sewing). Good morning. This is beautiful!! I was looking for something special to paint on the wall beside my saltwater reef tank. While I’ve seen some really nice diy mural KZbins, I just don’t have the skill/techniques for them. Actually, I’ve no experience at all. I’ve tried some on canvas this week, and well, not so good. This painting however I feel I may just be able to do okay with. It will be slow going for me since I have very limited experience, but I think if I take my time, I can do it. I make jewelry (wire wrap/weaving, wire sculptures, etc,). Who knows, I may have the confidence to start painting items to include in my jewelry. 😁 If I find I am not happy with my results, do you know how I could find a muralist in my area? Richmond, VA.

Painted something similar to this with tempera paint 4 my daughter's homework project... It came it better than I thought... Kinda hard to work with tempera paint and regular paper... But in was surprised how good it looked... Thanks 4 the video... And how do I find you on Facebook?

Thank you for subscribing! In this painting, I use Liquitex Basics acrylic paints. These are the brand I primarily use, due to good quality at a reasonable price. I also find the consistency easier to work with than many other acrylics, and the drying time tends to be a little slower as well.

Can I use a cobalt blue instead of ultramarine?

Ultramarine does jave a nice purple tint to it which is why I prefer it. You should be able to use cobalt blue though. Your water will just look more blue with less purple. I do use cobalt blue often too.

actually,.. using the mars black/burnt umber on the closer underpainting makes sense anyway against the other,.. the purple helps push that bank of corals and such back into the picture... maybe Your "art brain" subconsciously did it on purpose... lol
