This couple has accomplished much in their young lives so far (late twenties - early thirties). Watch the previous 121 episodes. Parker has a plenitude of mechanical, photographic and sailing skills. Katy works a full time job from a sailboat and is an accomplished sailor. Imagine being on a computer in a rocking and rolling boat 40 hours a week. Maybe they’ll figure it out together or separately - that’s life, but I wish them both the best. Thanks Parker and Katy for your efforts, insights and adventures to date. How many of us can honestly entertain a significant audience with our lives?!

@kappaiota5105 This generation has sadly adopted some terrible paradigm shifts that have hurt our entire society. I fear for our people and the coming challenges we face together. It will either clean out a despicable and morally repugnant sector of society that threatens us all with their broken moral compass and dispassionate adoption of characteristics once only known to be the modus operendi of victimising and BAD people. They are takers and defilers of all that is good and cherished by the common folks. We must oppose them and protect our life and dreams.

I think Mazatlan might be the best place for you to haul out, or Guaymas? They’re both more affordable than a lot of places on the Sea of Cortez, and also have a of resources for the marine industry. Definitely not La Paz, that’s where we are and it’s very expensive, though there is one yard that’s better priced. There’s also a fair amount of resources. We have a mooring here that we rent if you need a place to lay in the water. Dude, the Passport is a great boat!

Notes to self: - No autopilot - No sensors - No diesel engine - No bermuda rig - Minimal electrics More challenging in some ways, sure, but makes for a radically simpler life. People sailed just fine before these modern inventions that inevitably fail and are a constant source of worry. They do admittedly make life easier, when they work, but also more complicated and costly. As for rigging, I'd use a freestanding mast with a westernized junk sail. Less stress on the boat, less stress on the crew, fewer things that can break and easier to repair. Cheaper too, if you rig it yourself and make your own sails, which everyone can do. And should, because then you'd be able to repair it yourself. As for navigation, I'd use a windvane and learn celestial navigation with a sextant and paper charts. I'll be needing it anyway when GPS is jammed or goes down. When, not if - it's a military target. I'm not a complete luddite, I do want some electrics onboard for convenience. But it should be seen as just that, a convenience. When it fails, I should be just fine without it. I'd want a VHF radio and AIS transponder for tricky situations, and an EPIRB for offshore sailing. I think I'd even add an SSB antenna so I can receive weatherfax charts. I'd carry a couple of tablets with GPS and OpenCPN loaded with raster maps, but only use it as a secondary navigation tool and for rendering the weatherfax charts. As for power, I would need a small solar panel, charge controller and battery. Minimal setup. As for motor, my boat is small enough that an outboard would get me in and out of harbor. When the wind dies down, I'd rather read books than turn my sailboat into a noisy, smelly motorboat. I might experiment with a yuloh/sculling oar. I realize that this isn't for everyone. But keep in mind that if I were to travel back to the 70s, I'd be seen as a futuristic hi-tech sailor with a setup like this. People sailed the oceans just fine back then.

Heavy boats often sail ok in light winds. What limits light wind performance is sail area to wetted surface area ratio. Where heavy boats lose out is the displacement length ratio which means lower and more limiting "hull speed". In more precise terms you will sail at a lower speed length ratio than a lighter boat with a longer waterline. I personally very much dislike heavy displacement boats intensely. More weight is more load on steering, rig and crew. My own boat is 60 ft long with a 60 ft waterline and only 1300 ft² sail area. My boat weighs 15.5 tons lightship and 17.5 tons fully loaded. She is ridiculously easy to sail and I often singlehand including docking by myself. I have no bow thruster and don't need one. My boat has a D/L ratio of 90 fully loaded, so qualifies as a ULDB. She is a Sundeer 60...look it up on sailboat data
@southernfriedkiwi77262 ай бұрын
I love those boats. My uncle(in law) in 1984, built a 65 foot, three masted schooner pilot house, that shares some of the same benefits of design. Long waterline, modest beam(12 foot?), two cabins with the master pulled back from the bow to allow a regular queen bed, engine room with two diesels, low draft with a lifting keel, flat bottomed so that he could beach her to do repairs and cleaning, glass viewing window in the floor of the cockpit to see the props, dedicated workshop with lathe and drill press, dedicated sailrite desk for sail and other fabric repairs. The list goes on.

We are the one first on the beach, the mountain tops, the deepest places and hardest places defending and creating the safe and comfortable world so many take for granted built on the lives and sacrifices of countless brave men of massive character and even larger cohones.
