Sydney my twin brother compressed his spine at L1-T12 when we were 16. He's been a paraplegic ever since. We are 52 now and he's never learned how to really deal with it and it's really turned him into the meanest person I've ever met. Please keep your beautiful spirit and stay happy.

Sorry to read about your brother. It is very understandable. We all like to think we could handle adversity like Sydney, and maybe unfairly think that a great influence like Sydney and her story should make it easier for others. But everyone is different and even Sydney has challenges to come. Everyone who goes through something like that should feel like the whole world is going through it with them, but it is really too hard and suffering is lonely. I hope for the best for you and your brother.

My mum has scoliosis and had experimental surgeries when she was a child (she's in her 60s now, back then there was much less they could do, but they are always making progress) but she was told there were so many things she couldn't do and she just did them all anyway! and she's always been an inspiration to me, and I can tell you you are going to be an inspiration to so many people as well. You will still be able to adapt and do a lot of things that you love and this can def include the water skiing ⛷️🌊🤞 You have such a beautiful spirit and outlook, it's great to see you still smiling despite everything life has kept throwing at you, sending love and healing wishes your way ❤️

My scoliosis was also caused by weaker muscles on one side of my body. I was able to find an amazing scoliosis clinic close to where I live(Toronto Canada), that literally trains you on different exercises and therapy practices in order to strengthen and straighten your curve. Even with muscular dystrophy, I was able to stop progression and strengthen my back. I would highly highly recommend putting in the work and avoiding surgery for as long as you can! Goodluck with everything and thanks for sharing your journey❤️ i

Happy birthday Sydney. I'm sorry to hear about the scoliosis though. When you mentioned the digestive/stomach problems you're having too I started wondering whether they could actually be related. The human gut is very asymmetrical and it has its own nervous system which can actually function independently of the CNS, but is connected to the CNS in various ways, not just via nerves, but via the circulatory system and involving hormones and the endocrine system. There seem to be a lot of yoga practitioners that say that gentle yoga exercises can help to restore muscular symmetry and as yoga involves breathing exercises, that may help with the digestive problems too. Thanks for reminding me again that I don't really have any problems myself. Your kind of positivity in infectious! ❤️

Hey there Sydney! I had a full spinal fusion when I was 12! I was in the 6th grade and they put 2 rods and 14 screws in my back. It is a hard recovery but it gets so much better especially in the long run! 100% worth it! I didn't have a choice, I had to have the surgery or my spine would of gone inward leading to a slow death. I am 28 now and doing amazing! I have done martial arts with multiple flips, rolls etc and my surgery has never stopped me. I got to black belt level. I can ride rollercoasters and I have no limits and can do anything. Also, you can do anything you set your mind to! Don't let this surgery stop you from doing what you love or want to do. Honestly, at this point I forget that I've even had the surgery, since I'm so accustomed to it. I feel like I can still bend quite a bit like I did before. Just takes time. You got this!💕💕 -Kelsey

hey sydney! on june 11 of this year, i would have had my spinal fusion surgery 4 years ago to correct severe scoliosis. i got almost a total fusion, with 15 of my vertebrae fused from about T2-L4, and i had a 65 and 35 degree curves. i was in the hospital for about 3 days, and on painkillers for the next couple months. recovery for me wasn't easy, since i took a significant fall about a week post op and nearly paralyzed myself, and i had an allergic reaction to the gabapentin they gave me, however i am feeling so much better now! my posture is amazing, i'm 3 inches taller, and i will never have to worry about my back crushing my lungs in my 40s. it took 3 months for me to get back into sports, and about a year to recover fully. i still have some bad back days, and airplane seats are wicked uncomfortable, but if given the chance again to either do the surgery or let it continue, i would pick surgery every time. my back pain isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, and i'm so grateful i did it. my back also has not resisted against the rods, and it will stay stick straight for the rest of my life, of course that is if i don't break my rods. as scary as it sounds, it is honestly not that bad if you have a good team of nurses and the morphine button. be sure to get lots of rest and eat a lot of food! if you have any questions about the surgery or anything at all, please don't hesitate to ask. i was so scared for my surgery, and if i can alleviate any fear for anybody else who gets this surgery after me, i would love to do it. edit to add: i was 5 days past 16 when i got my surgery, and i turn 20 next week, still going strong :) ***and my spine went from 15 degrees to 65 within the course of three years

So I also had scoliosis caused by unequal muscles after an injury to my lumbar spine that impact the nerves. I start going multiple times a week to a special physio that put like a stimulator device on the muscles to get them to fire. Mine never got to the degree of yours (or anywhere close) and I started the therapy as soon as they noticed it happening BUT it did stop the progression and helped. I also eventually did regain muscle function after a few years so haven't had any further issues - but I hope they can figure something out to continue to allow you to water ski! Proud of you for having a positive outlook on this! You got it girl!

Hey, so I got a spinal fusion for my scoliosis in 2017 when I was 13, it was from the top to bottom I had a 60 degree curve and dreaded the surgery, I was so scared because I have a neuromuscular disease (muscular dystrophy) and top of being told all the scary things ur being told about the surgery I was told I had a 40% chance of dying in the operating room because my heart and lungs weren’t strong enough for that big of a surgery, but If I didn’t have the surgery it was going to get worse everyday so much that it would affect my breathing and I wouldn’t make it past 20. It was one of if not the hardest decision of my life and I was so scared of not only the recovery and pain but that I was going to die. But I gave it all to God and tried my best to have faith that even when I didn’t see it he was working for my well-being, and I just want to tell you that as hard as it was, having that surgery was one of the best decisions of my life. I wish I had someone tell me this when I was going through the thoughts that I know your having and the what ifs, but Gods got you, and trust me, the pain is not as bad as they make it sound, recovery is tough, but life’s tough and you will make it through it’s nothing more than what you and I had already been through. I had to learn that faith is being able to move on a maybe, because it might not work but God is always working. Give it all to him, if he did It for me, he can do it for you. You got this girl

You are very young and I hope the best for you! I'm so sorry you had to go and are going through this. I'm 53 and had 5 cervical and I'm fully fused and I feel like I almost died they had to pull 150 spinal fluid out from leaking within 2 days. I don't remember 4 months of my life. And then had lumbar surgery and fell and the pain and damage is still there and don't want a 7th surgery! Best of all luck hun. Mine just started with degenerative disc disease. Again live life don't ever stop. Xoxo

Girl I have severe scoliosis as well and it was super fast progressing. I was diagnosed in 8th grade and was fitted for a brace in 9th grade to try and stop the curvature from getting worse however I didn’t wear it nearly as much as I should because it was so uncomfortable. At that time it was roughly 25°. Then I ended up having a baby when I was 19 years old and then a second baby when I was 22 and a third baby when I was 23. After those 3 pregnancies my curvature was 53° so I had my first surgery when I was 24 years old in 2018 and it was corrected to roughly 20° and I am SO thankful for my husband who not only looked after me but our 3 kids too and he’s such a good dad. Now Fast forward to 2022 I had to have a second surgery because my spine was bending the rods again just from being so active and chasing my kids around trying to be the best mom I could be, I had also had my 4th baby in 2021 so that definitely did not help my case. My surgeon put as little hardware as possible the first time but it was just not enough to hold everything in place so he took it all out and put it back in except 2 vertebrae longer the 2nd time. Now a few months away from my 2 year anniversary from the 2nd surgery I’m now looking at facing yet another surgery because my rods are bending again and no amount of pain killer in this world makes it any better. I wouldn’t wish this pain on my worst enemy, the pain I’m feeling now and the pain after my first surgery. Post op pain was unlike anything I’ve ever felt and at this point I’ve already had 3 babies and 2 of those babies were unmedicated… labour and delivery felt like a paper cut in comparison to the first night after surgery. I was begging the nurses to put me in a coma or just kill me because I couldn’t stand the pain for another second however the nurses were so shocked why they didn’t give me a spinal nerve block after surgery because this is usually standard practice, so if you’re still waiting to get this surgery ASK FOR A NERVE BLOCK AND YOU SHOULD BE OKAY! I know you mentioned that the surgery is like being paralyzed in a sense and it’s true because I had to learn how to walk and even just stand again. I had my granny walker so I could sit down and wheel myself around whenever walking became too much for me which was often. It’s just crazy when you’re out of surgery you don’t realize how much you use your back muscles until you can’t use them, my husband was spoon feeding me in the hospital because lifting my arms to bring the fork to my mouth was nearly impossible. I couldn’t imagine going through this in your position when you need your back and your arms to do pretty much everything. I don’t know where you’re at right now in this process but I just wanted to tell you that you’re a freakin badass warrior and don’t ever forget it! I’m sending all the quick healing and muscle strengthening dust your way! And if you have any questions at all feel free to contact me! ❤

You are an inspiration!!! I really hope you can move forward despite all these medical stuff 💪 did you ever hear of craniosacral or body code, ways to help your body release any tension? Maybe it could prevent the scoliosis from getting worse... Keep doing the amazing things you're doing!

My mother was paralyzed waste down in the 80s from a car accident. They had to stabilize the spine with fusion with herring rods as u r talking about. Unfortunately the hardware they use does not change with time. As my mother got older and older she started to shrink due to age and the rods didn't they would stick out of her back at the top you could feel and see them and she would get horrible migraines.

Happy Belated Birthday ! Wow 17 !! I know with your positivity... You can do and go through anything !!! I believe you are under the best of care. I hope and pray for you. Your story is humbling. I've gone through major tramua and surgery with my hip. I have another for my teeth next week with implants. I too have given up many things in my life... Some dreams too. Beauty comes from Ashes. I believe in you. You can do anything... And miracles happen every day. For everything I've lost I've gained new things in return. I know you have too. Something good is going to happen. Love you too !!!! ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

So sorry you are going through this! I have had this surgery TWICE, due to Scheuermann's kyphosis and scoliosis. I could not imagine ever being able to water ski after this surgery. My advice to anyone I meet that is faced with this surgery, is to avoid the surgery as long as possible, if not forever. As you said it is a BIG deal, and changes so much, and takes so much away from you during recovery and sometimes long term. Maybe you will be able to stay at your current degree and continue to water ski and do other things.

I have scoliosis too, I'd hate to even think about surgery. I'm supposed to be wearing a brace on my back and knees but with my sensitivity issues, I just could not. I wish you luck in getting help with your current health issues. Happy belated birthday as well.

Having had progressive scoliosis myself and still trying to keep a curve (as I was fused on a curve), I would suggest searching for someone trained in the scroth method and in the mean time getting the heavy duty electronic muscle stimulators for the normal side of the spine to get those muscles to contract as muscle as the side that has the involuntary muscle contractions. I won't lie the electronic muscle stimulators are painful, but for me once the spine is back to where it should be the other pain goes away. I use the muscle stimulators in rehab, until get the curve back to where it should be but can use them at home too. With that said when I had my last lumbar fusion (s-1 to L-3) they had to remove all of my facet joints, but were still able to get the screws into the remaining bone. The screws also give added protection to the spinal cord because I don't have facet joints any more, as they protrude out a bit (not much) so if I fall I land on them vs the fragile bone that is remaining. My cousin who was fused from top to bottom due to progressive scoliosis due to partially severed spinal cord, his rod did break in the 90s after 20 years from pressure from the muscles and/or vibration from driving a fork lift for 20 years around the family farm. I would suggest reaching out to more in the para athletics community, for tips and even to help you find physical therapists that specialize in athletic rehabilitation. Inspiration my great auntie still got back on the water ski after both double hip replacements, she only stopped at 80 after a stroke, although I am sure if her family would let her she would find a way to still be skiing. I find being hard of hearing most of my life has helped me do things that the physicians and surgeons deem impossible. You can do the impossible too. You are an awesome inspiration.

My friend (13yo), has to get surgery to fix her back (54 degree bend) just before Christmas. She had it from a lil from birth, and falling down the stairs when she was 6. 3 years ago her bend was 35 degrees (granted puberty and her being really tall). Being so young and being her friend I’m a little concerned, so any tips to help her get through being in a wheelchair/ helping me out will be appreciated! I really hope all goes well for you!

I just watched your video of how you became paralyzed now part of this one. I live daily with pain in my back down into my legs. Some As you described and more.then 3 Major back surgeries lower fusion (regret having the first). I also have curves in spine no as bad. Scar tissue now on spine (Wear your brace) Please research write out all pros and cons because each of us are different plus the doctor who does the surgery. What ever you choose to do make sure you tell how you feel no matter how weird or unrelated you think it may be. Stay connected to God and Family keep that happy upbeat attitude. I pray that your spine straightens so no surgery needed and your able to walk again with no pain.

I’m really glad you can drive, my grandpa was an amputee and his right leg was taken off when I was around 7 or so I think and it was just below the knee and his prosthetic had no motion in the ankle it was solid so he learned how to drive with his cane he taught me to find ways to make life easier for yourself and others (then his eyesight got bad bad so others took him places but I loved it whenever I did because he’d let me get whatever I wanted for lunch) - side note keep at it and find a way to make life easier and still fun for you

Do you go to a chiropractor regularly to help with your alignment and get adjusted? What has been your experience with that? I would love to see a whole appointment showing your adjustment. It would also be super interesting to watch an appointment for physio/ physical therapy for your scoliosis. Were your physical therapists not treating you for your scoliosis before? Did they know about it? Or were they only treating you like adult palegic whose back was already developed? I’m so interested to see what has changed. Have you gone to other physical therapists to get a second opinion after you received your ct scans back? It’s fascinating. You are a hard worker. I’d love to see the changes you have made in your physical therapy sessions to prevent further degree curves in your spine.
