I wouldn’t say a 15-month old who runs on stage to sing, because that’s what she’d seen her sisters do, was choosing a career, anymore than a kid dressing in a firefighter costume is. Judy’s mother might not have planned to start pushing her into performing when she was a toddler, but she certainly had made plans for her to when she was still a young child. Quote from Judy: “Nobody ever asked me what I wanted to do. I would’ve liked to have been happily married, have my children and just be a nice lady.”

I know what you mean, I had a phase where I wanted to be a dietitian like my mom but I think that was my own way of saying that I loved my mom a lot as you get older you tend to branch off and find out who are. I guess Judy never really got to know who she truly was in that sense because she was always performing.

@@71crm I think that’s a very astute observation. She wasn’t allowed to be who she was through her formative years, that’s for sure.

23:00 - this might just be me, but wasn't the whole Shirley/Clark/Harlow deal story debunked a while ago...?
@luv4hutch

Yes, it has been. That story originated in Shirley's autobiography, Child Star, because that's what Fox told Shirley. They told her this beautiful lie about a deal that didn't happen to spare her feelings, rather than admit that they said "Hell no!" to the idea of loaning her out to MGM. (Not that it achieved anything different, it just resulted in Shirley putting on a brave face to mask her hurt all the same.) Notably, the teleplay adaptation of Child Star also aired on ABC in 2001, months after Me & My Shadows did, and repeated the myth, because it was based on Shirley's book. So that plays a big deal into why that myth endures to this day. Of course, both Judy and Shirley fell victim, to differing extents, to the problems and predatory ways of Hollywood, and its tendency to chew people up and spit them back out. One studio executive even exposed his penis to Shirley when she was 11, and she responded with nervous laughter, which prompted him to smack her, but nothing happened beyond that. Shirley's mom was also continuously victim to repeated sexual advances. And Judy was groped and fondled all the time, including by Louis B. Mayer. In short, the likes of Harvey Weinstein is nothing new in Hollywood. Of course Judy suffered so much more and in other ways, with MGM's soul-crushing management style, forcing her to starve and diet and getting her hooked on pills to meet some arbitrary standard of "beauty," starting the cycle that would ultimately kill her.

Harlow died way too early to be part of any Oz deal. She died in 1937 and MGM never purchased the oz material until I think January of 1938. That myth absolutely won't die! Lol!

@@luv4hutchit was Arthur freed and he didn't smack her. Read her autobiography. She was 12 and was brought to MGM after she left Fox. Freed exposed himself to her in his office and she burst into uncontrollable laughter. She had never seen anyone naked except herself and she had no idea what he was doing. She laughed so hard that he threw her out of the office. Her unexpected reaction probably saved her from being molested. In the car she told her mother what happened and her mom said that Louis Mayer had come onto her by putting his hand on her knee.

@@sunnydayzie1202 Yes, that's right, I think I mixed that fact of Freed's exposure with Victor Fleming infamously smacking Judy in the face while shooting Oz when she couldn't stop laughing at Bert Lahr's reaction. The point of course, stands, that both Judy and Shirley were victimized by this system, and it was a miracle that Shirley emerged from it relatively sane at all. In some way, her fame peaking with The Blue Bird was a blessing in disguise, because she could get off the treadmill, if in not as secure a position as she and her parents thought at that time. Judy didn't get that chance, because she was just a workhorse for virtually everyone around her, and her body was just so worn out that she had nothing left to give at the end. Do I think that the world's most positive outcome for Judy would have her live to be 100 and to see the extent to which Liza ended up becoming big and living to be past 75? No, I don't think that was ever in the cards. But any years that Judy could've had added to her life, any extension of that incredible talent and any chance for her to achieve the things she yearned for to get the security she wanted and deserved, it would've been worth it. But everyone failed her, and put her in a self-fulfilling prophecy circle where she could then only fail herself.
