LOL I’m sorry I keep posting but watching and hearing her sing “When the Sun Comes Out” shows the sheer genius of capturing the viewer’s attention 100% and how her sheer powerful voice and stage presence is so incredible that she doesn’t need any props, backup dancers to sell a song! Unfortunately today’s “singers” are lackluster and need those distractions. There’s a reason why she was called “The Legend” in her lifetime which they put above her dressing room door on her series...

In the late 1980s, I visited the Judy Garland exhibition in London that displayed Judy's famous costumes from her MGM movies. I was shocked to see how tiny Judy actually was in real life and kept thinking how did this wonderful huge, naturally talented voice come from such a little lady. She was just fantastic. How she never won an Oscar for her electrifying performance in 'A star in born' is madness. Whenever I hear her recording of "The man that got away", I still get goosebumps hearing her voice soaring over the lyrics. Her vocal range was amazing. I wish she had received an honorary oscar even after her death.

@@jl3322 Yes those are all great things, but he was also married like 5 times. I was referring to the years following his departure from MGM. He had a bit of a drinking and gambling problem, he was caught cheating alot. A couple of hiccups along the road, but could have been avoided. This is why a strong family structure is so important. People giving you love and support, having your back, making you feel validated, and keeping you out of trouble. This is something both Judy and Mickey needed to prevent their bad habits.

I’ve always wondered about the opening of this first episode. Judy’s hair and makeup look, are totally different when singing She’s singing, “I Feel A Song Comin’ On!” And the “Timmy and Penny” segment as opposed to the original opening number of “Keep Your Sunnyside Up” and the rest of the show when she’s wearing dark clothes and her hair and makeup is different. I wonder if they brought Mickey back to reshoot the “Timmy and Penny” segment. No matter, I think that this is her Best episode because she’s reunited with her best friend, Mickey Rooney.
@ricardo22665 жыл бұрын
Well spotted, you are correct about the Timmy and Penny segment being taped on a later date. I've just consulted the Rainbow's End book which states that this was an insert taped on 29 November. So it was taped only 10 days before the 6 month old show finally aired on 8 December. This could explain some of the delay - they were hanging on for Mickey to be available to tape this new segment. So the final version of the air tape contains footage shot on 3 different dates. I've added this new info to the description. Thanks for alerting me to this.

The legendary costume designer Edith Head was initially employed to design Judy's clothes. She designed the dark cocktail-style dress Judy wears in some of the sequences, including the original opening number, included here as an out-take. Judy also wears this elegant, under-stated dress in the deleted Ol' Man River, which you can see elsewhere on KZbin. However, the top brass at CBS thought Head's designs were too 'sombre' and downbeat, and so designer Ray Aghayan stepped up to do Judy's costumes. He had a totally different approach, much more 'showbiz' and glitzy, which the execs liked. Among Aghayan's designs: the famous 'poppy dress' and the Chinese mandarin-style outfit worn by Judy towards the end of the series in her concerts specials.

Doing 'impersonations'..truly a lost art... enjoying Mickey Rooney's impersonations of Maurice Chevalier and Jimmy Durante. Likewise, country singer Meryle haggard did signing impersonations of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, among many more during the late 1960s' as well.

Judy must have loved ending her shows with the same song her beloved father used in his vaudeville act. I often wonder if her father didn’t die so young and leaving her in the clutches of her wicked mother and the studio system! From what I have read, Frank Gumm was extremely close with Judy and vice versa and looked out for his youngest. I doubt MGM and Ethel would have had started her addiction to the uppers and downers that later destroyed her life.

bradly2007 I agree, all those wealthy showbiz pals could so easily have organised a ‘flag day’ (GoFundMe as we have today) to help settle Garland’s debts. Perhaps they were concerned that Sid Luft (who gambled away most of the income she brought in) would syphon it off for his own ends. Besides, the IRS was claiming any money she earned to pay back taxes owed since the 1950s. Not Garland’s fault, but she had shady/incompetent advisors.

Mickey himself declared bankruptcy. Although no longer the world's most popular film star, Mickey continued working in film, television, and personal appearances. It was rare for him to even have a few weeks off for decades. But his problem was the same as Judy's: alcoholism, drug addiction, and trusting the wrong people. Mickey biggest problem was gambling. Judy was no gambler, but Sid Luft, and then lover/manager David Begelman, were and squandered Judy's big earnings. Judy had no interest in finances, and gave the men in her life free reign to do what they wanted. This was a conscious decision Judy made. Elizabeth Taylor, for a different example, wanted to know where every penny of her earnings went, and played a large part in her negotiations and investments.

It's incomprehensible that in order for the high energy levels required to be sustained in what was regularly as many as 18 hours filming in one day, the production team were instructed to encourage the leading cast members vitamin boosters that were amphetamine based. No wonder she ended up fighting various addictions in her later years and met an untimely death.
