Not using media (either completely or sparsely) is definitely a disconnect from THEM and a connection to YOU. You find out more about yourself and are kind of forced to sit in the REAL world. These can be pros or cons depending on the person, but I would definitely say it can present you some peace that you didn’t know you needed. I will say though documentation of memories (pictures, videos, audio) are a beautiful thing to have and be able to look back on. It just doesn’t have to always be shared with EVERYONE.

You can start slowly, the way I did. I completely abandoned Tiktok and Twitter, I only use Instagram to read the messages my friends send, but ignoring the reels. It's a huge effort, I used to use my phone 11 hours a day, and when I got off the apps, I was exhausted for anything else. For 2 weeks now I have felt much more comfortable when I go out with my friends, at work, and with myself. You become much more productive too, as you try to look for ways to fill your time and your mind. Stopping using social media is the best choice for you, believe me. Everything gets better. Absolutely agree with everything that you mentioned in this video. I deleted my Snapchat account about 6 months ago and finally deleted my instagram accounts 2 weeks ago. I feel so much lighter, less stressed, more focused, been reading books, watching the news more closely than I did before. And most importantly, focusing on what makes me happy! It’s horrible how I used to compare myself to people online, when in reality they are probably only showcasing the best parts of their lives.

I really like what you said about being in the moment rather than on the phone. There's something surreal about being in public surrounded by many people on their phones, while you just enjoy the sights and sounds the way people would have done before the age of the internet. It makes the small experiences in life seem more valuable (which they are) and makes you realize you can make the experience as fulfilling as you want it to be.

I applaud you for doing this! I'm a college student and one of the things I hate is walking around campus and seeing everyone with the heads glued to their phones. I've had various social media accounts since I was 11 (22 now) and on very rare occasions do good things every come out of it. I've found that people just don't know how to talk anymore, especially the new generation of kids who are growing up with cellphones before they can even read. The phrase "terminally online" is very true and people who spend 12+ hours a day on social media are the same people who blame others for their own problems. I spend less than an hour on my phone every day nowadays and I like to spend time with people who think the same. Its made me a much happier person now that I barely use social media.

I wouldn't say I was focused on others lives it was just I would sit there waiting for one person to message me and I knew that they weren't feeling the same way and it destroyed me but it help me take the plunge into this to better myself and honestly just remove unnecessary stress that was ripping me apart. Its been hard as hell to do because its only been a week and still pick up my phone in times that I would indulged in social media. you're and inspiration to many older and younger than you man, keep killing it and stay motivated everyone we can all do this! remember discipline is the key to winning this fight!

I quit social media about 2 years ago and I am much more calm. I have noticed that I am happier not knowing what people are doing bc I just never cared. I'm much more in the moment too. I went to the Taylor Swift concert and didn't even post about it or anything. I took a few pictures and some videos, but these were for myself, not to post online. I would actually just send some to my boyfriend. He kinda became my social media in a way lol. People don't need to know what I'm doing nor do they care. I recently quit my job to start fresh. I deleted all my social media. I love when I see that it is possible to do this longterm, so thank you. My favorite points you made were that eliminating social media usage in public makes you more in the moment. One thing that I've found in my short detox so far was the ability to be bored again. It sounds lame, but intentional boredom can be a very stimulating activity for creativeness and self-reflection. It's like being a kid again, waiting for that bell to ring at the end of class, except with a more complex brain. It's been great for visualization of how I want my future to play out and releasing time I wasted consuming media that really meant nothing to my everyday life. Keep bettering yourself! It’s a pretty simple memory but I find it hard to remember anytime I slowed down to look at what was around me when I was heavily addicted to social media. Once I stopped spending so many hours on my phone I realized I need to get out and have social interactions and find creative outlets and fill my time with things that feel rewarding. It’s been 22 months since I left social media. I have no regrets at all. I got sick of people gossiping, drama, negativity & people faking their lives & friendships and sharing everything that should be private or craving attention with provocative pictures & selfies. A number of things I realised: 1. People who added me as “Friends” didn’t really care about me. They were “So called Friends” 2. When I was going through my hardest times, including anxiety, upset, trauma and stress, Nobody was REALLY there for me or reached out to me. 3. Certain posts or videos get blown out of proportion or completely taken out of context even if it’s nothing negative. 4. People lie about the amount of friends they REALLY have. Who in the REAL world has 100s or 1000s of friends WHO?? 5. Communication is very one sided. The same person had to make the first move to start a conversation as the other person doesn’t make an effort themselves or just can’t be bothered. 6. People lie about their lives, they only show the positive side of theirs lives which doesn’t show the real truth about the person. You can’t tell and don’t see if someone is REALLY depressed, upset, isolated, lonely, feeling suicidal or what’s actually going on in their actual lives. Even if people post how they really feel, people don’t always care. 7. It makes people fake and insecure. It’s not just school kids or teenagers in college or university, but adults as well are being fake & insecure. 8. People compare themselves to others just to get more “likes” & comments. 9. Social media has increased loneliness, isolation. Anxiety and depression which can be severe. 10. Due to social media and the increase in technology, it’s causing destruction & destroying peoples lives in the sense of their is no sense of unity, community, love and nobody wants to help each other. If they see someone doing something constructive and productive and they’re doing well, people will laugh at them in an act of ignorance, and cannot wait for them to fall down. 11. Having a proper conversation or being real is considered not normal and people think it’s creepy. People don’t like having real conversations 12. It’s made people to be narcissists, self entitlement, ignorant, prejudice and bullies. 13. People can say things or make comments that are abusive, racist, sexist, ignorant, prejudice, misogynist, homophobia, xenophobia, discrimination openly online, rather than to your face. 14. I have seen Boys & Girls take provocative, selfies / pictures to get attention from so called friends / strangers, sometimes in a negative way, for example, woman having their chests hanging out, body image, men & women showing off muscles, six pack & more. 15. With social media & the young generation with regards to friendships, people feel that if they add someone as friend request and they accept it, they automatically think that’s “friends for life” people need to realise that’s not how friendship really works. I never had TikTok, Twitter or Instagram. Glad I didn’t sign up to any of them. Facebook was the only social media platform I had and it was recommended to me back when I was in my 20s. I only use KZbin as I can look at interesting things like cooking recipes and motivation videos and music videos of festivals & concerts and more fun stuff. I enjoy going out in nature, going for walks, bowling listening to music and learning new hobbies and watching movies. Since leaving it’s been the best decision of my life. I enjoy life more, I can now enjoy doing the things I do or want to try without being judged or told what to do without being made to feel guilty. I feel more happier and a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I think if social media disappeared forever, I can guarantee people will spend REAL quality time with friends and family. People will know who their REAL friends are and that they will do things together and have a good time doing it. I also feel that people will have proper conversations and listen and engage.

Another point you didn't mention is that the ones who use social media make the ones that don't use social media look lame or boring, like if you don't have social media then nobody wants to hang out with you because you don't know what dumb trends are going around or you ain't cool. Like imagine nobody wanting to be around you because you don't have social media... crazy.

I completely agree with you. As a kid, I’ve been raised being on your phone is rude. I still feel that way. I always flip my phone down when I make time for a loved one. Obviously there’s exceptions, but I hate if a person is scrolling on social media and not present. I understand texting, if a parent is reaching out, etc, not my business. You know there’s a difference when someone goes on their phone to check something vs scrolling the whole time we are meant to be together. Because of social media, it eliminates the mystery, wonder, and process of getting to know someone and building a relationship. Such as how we would structure our conversations on learning about the other person, their way of life, hobbies, over time. Now it’s instantenous. There are pros and cons. I love having my privacy. I prefer phone calling my friends, to ask if they wanna hang, or they’ll call and ask to swing by. Life feels normal. Good. That’s how our 20s should be, not obsessing over imaginary worlds or false, projected images of ourselves.

I like your thought proccess on your dopamine detox. In my experience it was quite different, I actually accepted a lot of things including death. Which made me appreciate life more often and not glued on the phone. I feel like the mass majority of social media users are young and in school. But for people that is older, using social media as a business opportunity instead of pleasure is a great way to set your mind to detox. Having the mindset that social media works for you and you not work for it sure does change your reality of things

Absolutely agree. Although i think that adults aren’t too far off from young in terms of how addicted they are. They definitely use the apps nearly as much if you look at the stats. Most people can benefit from a detox

I only post my videos then I'm off it KZbin being my only actual form of media intake. it made me realize how much stupid shit people care about dude like it's soooo sad. Hopefully our upcoming generations can break the curse W video bro!
