Years ago I suffered from drug addiction. Recently, I quit social media and couldn't believe how similar my withdrawals were to drug use. The feelings of anxiety, cravings, mild depression, and not knowing what to do with yourself when not using were all there. It really opened my eyes to how addicting and what a mental strain social media could be.

I realized this too. Two weeks ago I had to give up my phone to my dad because he lost his. It felt weird not scrolling through TikTok ect. and being alone with all those self loathing thoughts felt awful. Just reminded me of those times when I ran out of money to buy drugs and was forced to be sober.

quitting social media around a bunch of people who still use it is really discouraging. even with my own dad - we will be sitting down to eat and he’ll scrolling on instagram, texting, or doing whatever else on his phone instead of talking to me. things are hard but i wouldn’t go back to socials.

I completely agree. It’s so easy to get caught in the tide when the people closest to you are using social media left and right. Not using media (either completely or sparsely) is definitely a disconnect from THEM and a connection to YOU. You find out more about yourself and are kind of forced to sit in the REAL world. These can be pros or cons depending on the person, but I would definitely say it can present you some peace that you didn’t know you needed. I will say though documentation of memories (pictures, videos, audio) are a beautiful thing to have and be able to look back on. It just doesn’t have to always be shared with EVERYONE.

I was in the military and lived on ship for 9 months without any phone signal or access to social media. I read a lot of books, socialized with everyone on ship and it made me less introverted. Once i got off ship and had access to social media i was instantly addicted again. So its not impossible, we just adapt to whatever is available. But i will say with having access to social media, you feel no need to interact with others, so it explains why more people are very introverted now with technology.

4:15, i just say "my account is down" its been almost 2 months and now when people ask like "bro do u still not have instagram" im just like "honestly at this point im "too lazy" to try to get my account up again" lol when in reality i deactivated it. allhtough tiktok peopel have already gotten used to me having, i miss musically where we just made fun silly danicing and singing videos, but i feel like the app is a lot darker now.. and very wrong and ig i just really hate the app and god knows what they knew about me and what info i clicked "accept" and gave them permission to own, like photos or listenitng to my convos. im glad i delteed that almost a yea ago now, allhtough in the begining i downloaded and delted it a lot of times until i just didnt download it again cuz i dnt miss it at all now, i just kind of miss discovering new music or something, but thats it and idrc tbh, ive started reading the news which is a looot better, having social media as my news source was so shitty lol thats the worst source out there. but yeah and about trends i honeslty dont care that much about them, saved a lot of money, and i also think im mature enough to liek have my own fashioon or humor sense, i dont need to know whats trendy or wtv to have a convo or anythign which ig im grateful for. but instagram was a bit diff, in the beginning i also deleted and dowmlaoded and delted and activated my account many times, becasue i hated how unfocused i was and how my attention span had gotten so short, and even tho it wasnt as bad as scrolling on tiktok cuz the contetn was a bit diff, it was still very time consuming and i was also way too fixated on what my frioends were posting or me always feeling the need to post and share i never used to be the type to post my face, but this summer i did it once, then again and again, i enjoyed the likes, the attention, i got hooked, i soon realized luckily, that it was very unhealthy, being so obsessive over likes and my face, i soon went back to now posting again, not cuz i was insecure, but beacue i truly wasn tcomfortabl with it, privacy wise and also i just didnt see the appeal, especiialy with ai and stuff ebing so scary now. then i started just delteing the app and using it from a wesbite since it had much fewe features, but after about a week from school start, all the new people i had met started following me on there n stuff i was like, ok... its now or never, i reeeeally debated on wther or not to do it, but i edned up with this conclusion: i deactrivated my account so.. the only difference from delteing it permanent is well.. that its permamnet, so peopel wont be able to see my account or anythign posted or texted from there, and ill have the freedom to activate it again in a few years maybe after high school ,cuz the only con was that id miss out on friends or familys milestones, but honeslty its fine, ill prob activate it again in maybe 3 years when i graduate high shcool, maybe some tiem after that people i lose contact with well staet talking again or maybe they have started a fmily or something, it would be fun seeing where my old lassmartes end up yk. so yeah missing out on milestones is the only con, but as of rn i just have snapcaht, i delted twitter too cuz it was reaallly toxic the side i was on.. and facebook.. well i doint really like that either i only have it due to sports, but yeah i never use it lol, the only thing i really use my phone for now is either music or texting my friends on snapchat. its very peaceful not having social media lol

I ended up coming back to it unfortunately because it fits what I need. I hate giving my number to people and it’s so much easier to connect to new or old people because of social media. I don’t feel that I’m in the old never ending hold of social that I was in before my break, but I hate that it’s the only way to go about connecting with others without having to open the app and be exposed to what makes u addicted to it in the first place. It is now Oct 2023 and I will be 39 in about 7 weeks and I have not returned in over 5 years. It has been an amazing experience to be free of having the pressure to have people up to date on what you’re doing. Sometimes I think of getting back on because I’ve become a mother in the last 4 years to two little girls and want to share things with my network but don’t want to fall into that trap again.

I don’t ever comment on yt videos but I wanted to say congrats for following through with the detox and the birth of your 2 beautiful girls! But please don’t post your children. I’m social media a lot and being a teenager, I see moms post their kids all the time. There are horrible pervs on the internet and people who will take pictures of your kids and post fake missing posters of them on Fb and will exploit them! never post your kids faces anywhere mama we have to protect them😢

I deleted Facebook and Instagram when I was pregnant with twins, because I realised that I didn’t have time to waste on it. If I want to share photos I send them directly to the friends or family members who will appreciate them. It made me think a bit more carefully about who is actually a close friend and who is just an acquaintance.

One that is private and has only close people who I permit to follow to see stuff about my life, and another with only my actual face as the pfp and not any photos with faces and in videos with brief faces only when my friends and I would gather to sing together

Thank you so much for sharing your story and making this video! I did a dopamine detox back in high school, and that lasted me about 2 years. I could totally relate when you talked about how you felt out of the loop with current trends, or how frustrated you were when trying to explain to your friends why you didn’t want to open links to pointless posts they sent you. I felt like I was obligated to stay on social media to connect with people from when I was younger but in reality like you said no one truly cares about what you’re doing. Now that I’m a senior in college, I am seriously considering going through with a dopamine detox again in the next few months because I’m at that stage in life where I know I need to make a change but couldn’t figure out what that was at first. I noticed I felt a lot more productive and better about myself during my first detox.

I really like what you said about being in the moment rather than on the phone. There's something surreal about being in public surrounded by many people on their phones, while you just enjoy the sights and sounds the way people would have done before the age of the internet. It makes the small experiences in life seem more valuable (which they are) and makes you realize you can make the experience as fulfilling as you want it to be.

hey! I used to feel like this 2 weeks ago, so I created a time limit of 1 minute for my social media (instagram, twitter and tiktok) so I don't have to delete them altogether, but have it as a reminder that I shouldn't access them. You can start slowly, the way I did. I completely abandoned Tiktok and Twitter, I only use Instagram to read the messages my friends send, but ignoring the reels. It's a huge effort, I used to use my phone 11 hours a day, and when I got off the apps, I was exhausted for anything else. For 2 weeks now I have felt much more comfortable when I go out with my friends, at work, and with myself. You become much more productive too, as you try to look for ways to fill your time and your mind. Stopping using social media is the best choice for you, believe me. Everything gets better. Change only exists if there is discomfort. If you feel stress, mild-depression or irritation, feelings that this withdrawal causes, then be sure that you are on the right path!

I applaud you for doing this! I'm a college student and one of the things I hate is walking around campus and seeing everyone with the heads glued to their phones. I've had various social media accounts since I was 11 (22 now) and on very rare occasions do good things every come out of it. I've found that people just don't know how to talk anymore, especially the new generation of kids who are growing up with cellphones before they can even read. The phrase "terminally online" is very true and people who spend 12+ hours a day on social media are the same people who blame others for their own problems. I spend less than an hour on my phone every day nowadays and I like to spend time with people who think the same. Its made me a much happier person now that I barely use social media.

I wouldn't say I was focused on others lives it was just I would sit there waiting for one person to message me and I knew that they weren't feeling the same way and it destroyed me but it help me take the plunge into this to better myself and honestly just remove unnecessary stress that was ripping me apart. Its been hard as hell to do because its only been a week and still pick up my phone in times that I would indulged in social media. you're and inspiration to many older and younger than you man, keep killing it and stay motivated everyone we can all do this! remember discipline is the key to winning this fight!

It’s been 22 months since I left social media. I have no regrets at all. I got sick of people gossiping, drama, negativity & people faking their lives & friendships and sharing everything that should be private or craving attention with provocative pictures & selfies. A number of things I realised: 1. People who added me as “Friends” didn’t really care about me. They were “So called Friends” 2. When I was going through my hardest times, including anxiety, upset, trauma and stress, Nobody was REALLY there for me or reached out to me. 3. Certain posts or videos get blown out of proportion or completely taken out of context even if it’s nothing negative. 4. People lie about the amount of friends they REALLY have. Who in the REAL world has 100s or 1000s of friends WHO?? 5. Communication is very one sided. The same person had to make the first move to start a conversation as the other person doesn’t make an effort themselves or just can’t be bothered. 6. People lie about their lives, they only show the positive side of theirs lives which doesn’t show the real truth about the person. You can’t tell and don’t see if someone is REALLY depressed, upset, isolated, lonely, feeling suicidal or what’s actually going on in their actual lives. Even if people post how they really feel, people don’t always care. 7. It makes people fake and insecure. It’s not just school kids or teenagers in college or university, but adults as well are being fake & insecure. 8. People compare themselves to others just to get more “likes” & comments. 9. Social media has increased loneliness, isolation. Anxiety and depression which can be severe. 10. Due to social media and the increase in technology, it’s causing destruction & destroying peoples lives in the sense of their is no sense of unity, community, love and nobody wants to help each other. If they see someone doing something constructive and productive and they’re doing well, people will laugh at them in an act of ignorance, and cannot wait for them to fall down. 11. Having a proper conversation or being real is considered not normal and people think it’s creepy. People don’t like having real conversations 12. It’s made people to be narcissists, self entitlement, ignorant, prejudice and bullies. 13. People can say things or make comments that are abusive, racist, sexist, ignorant, prejudice, misogynist, homophobia, xenophobia, discrimination openly online, rather than to your face. 14. I have seen Boys & Girls take provocative, selfies / pictures to get attention from so called friends / strangers, sometimes in a negative way, for example, woman having their chests hanging out, body image, men & women showing off muscles, six pack & more. 15. With social media & the young generation with regards to friendships, people feel that if they add someone as friend request and they accept it, they automatically think that’s “friends for life” people need to realise that’s not how friendship really works. I never had TikTok, Twitter or Instagram. Glad I didn’t sign up to any of them. Facebook was the only social media platform I had and it was recommended to me back when I was in my 20s. I only use KZbin as I can look at interesting things like cooking recipes and motivation videos and music videos of festivals & concerts and more fun stuff. I enjoy going out in nature, going for walks, bowling listening to music and learning new hobbies and watching movies. Since leaving it’s been the best decision of my life. I enjoy life more, I can now enjoy doing the things I do or want to try without being judged or told what to do without being made to feel guilty. I feel more happier and a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I think if social media disappeared forever, I can guarantee people will spend REAL quality time with friends and family. People will know who their REAL friends are and that they will do things together and have a good time doing it. I also feel that people will have proper conversations and listen and engage.

Another point you didn't mention is that the ones who use social media make the ones that don't use social media look lame or boring, like if you don't have social media then nobody wants to hang out with you because you don't know what dumb trends are going around or you ain't cool. Like imagine nobody wanting to be around you because you don't have social media... crazy.

I quit social media on Sunday and now I am receiving multiple suggestions for these types of videos lol weird😅 but I found this very helpful in affirming my decision. Comparison really is the thief of joy and being overexposed to other people and so much negativity on social media definitely has taken a toll on my self image and my mindset. Also, I suffer from insomnia because of my mental illness but since quitting social media I’ve gotten more sleep in the past 4 days then I have gotten in the past 2-3 years! I feel so rejuvenated and inclined to workout, learn stuff and skills just because and to read. So far so good ig 😂😊

Amazing video. You're one of the reasons I've started creating short form content of my own. Thank you.

I've deactivated instagram for about 2 months now. Its the only social media I had. I'm really living LIFE. Everyone needs to do this.

Hey Abraham! I absolutely love this video because it’s literally the same way I quit social media, it was my 13th Birthday (day before new years) and I saw a KZbin video about deleting social media. I deleted everything on the spot, and now that I’m 15, it was easily the best decision I’ve made in my life. I resonate with the points you said in this video, and the pros HEAVILY outweigh the cons. You’re a great dude and that’s quite hard to come by. Keep it up! -Joseph
