I feel like I find myself in a similar place as you. Not the best coder, not the best mathematician, but pretty good at a bunch of things. I've decided to try to challenge myself with a harder path than I've taken in the past, and work my way into a full time DS role at my current company and be the best in terms of business expertise while also learning some more math. I am curious as to why you said that you have to focus on only one industry or one thing to always come back to? Have you read the book “Range: why generalist triumph in a specialized world”? That book challenges the assumption that you only have to focus on one thing. Furthermore, I feel like you can leverage your brand and your channel to be the thing you come back to as you explore all of these different fields. You can leverage your curiosity as an asset not a liability!

Well, you are in a good position atleast. I studied molecular biology at university and combined it with some machine learning (monte carlo, Artificial Neural Nets, etc). Around 2010 I started developing neural nets, and you are correct, not a single person, outside of those working with them, understand at all what they are about. There was this really interesting problem about protein folding and I thought it would be cool to apply neural nets to it but i never really got anywhere. Deep Mind has now solved that issue and can predict the folding accuratly, however, they are lacking the most crucial thing, the reason that made me want to solve it.They take the sequance and tell you the structure, but often you would rather have something that could interact with somthing. So, what you actaully want in pharmacuticals and medical situations is when you have the sequence/structure of A, if I select part of it's surface, what set of sequences would give me a strucutre that tightly binds to that surface. So, it is the other way around: given a surface, what sequences gives me new surface that binds to it. This is the true billion dollar idea. With it you can find the structure for a cellular surface protein and then generate new proteins that would interact with it. With this you could stop/start cellular process and cure many diseases. Or if you delive them into the cell you could stop/activate whatever cellular process you like. If you have dissease that is the result of too little interaction between two cells types, maybe due to small numbers or poor interaction, you simpy make a protein that matches both their surface signaling proteins and forms a "bridge" holding a larger fraction of the cells in contact for longer times. In short, with tech like that we become true masters of biology and can manipulate our cells however we like.

haha i was gonna search will kwan yesterday then got distracted (i've got a product idea for that problem, that is very horizontal in nature...anyway) so i'm glad you put this out . I like the upload randomness, occasionally i wonder if i missed one - then i'm like, no he's still AWOL lol.
