EPISODE 39
Better long distance visibility is needed for evening/night passages on Alan. I had some dramas with the fit of the light and housing, so this is more a part 2 of x, rather than 2 of 2!
Products mentioned:
50W LED Wireless Remote Control Searchlight
Model: NME A/S (Husnes, Norway) 7.5m TELB
Engine: Bukh DV48 turbo diesel

Round off the sharp corners of the toe stop , no doubt it will one day catch a shin or back of leg

putting some reflective material into the searchlight housing could be a smart move

small suggestion for the searchlight: why not holes in the side of the pod aswell, allowing it to illuminate more when turned to the side instead of just being blocked by the pod at that angle

Not that I'm any expert in fiberglass but I do have some metal fabrication skills. Re your light, why not make a cardboard 'model' first to try for fit then build the wooden mold? For smaller things that's how we do it sometimes particularly if there's complex mounting shapes involved.

A note on drilling the holes to find where to cut; Pacific Northwest natives, when carving their dugout canoes (which were big and seaworthy enough to hunt whales from) would drill spaced holes all over the hull. They would then pound in pegs that had been pre-cut and measured into the holes so as to be flush with the outside of the hull. Then they could finish carving out the inside, knowing that when they hit the end of the peg they were at the desired hull thickness, thus achieving a uniform hull thickness and avoiding accidental thin spots. Given your travels you're probably already aware of this but I felt compelled to share the random facts I've accumulated.

Thanks Bob. I've not been immersed to any great extent with communities south of the tree-line, so this is indeed news to me. I've seen this technique used in composites mould making etc a few times, but impressed that it has these roots.

So I have to ask and maybe it was answers before. Why do you mount the searchlight inside that box and not on top? Is it to protect it from ice? Good entertaining video as always.

Search lights towards the bow and low down will be extremely vulnerable, so yes it's so it has a home. Also so I can make the step. It's not going high and towards the stern as I don't want to illuminate fog, snow and spray between the bow and driving console window.

The angles on the steps are a tripping hazard now . Check it out there is a tremendous amount of study on tripping . As little as 1/8 inch 3mm can cause a tripping accident

Probably. But I've been inside loads of boats, commercial ships, warships, and so on. Thousands of things to trip or bash yourself on. There comes a point where you have to expect people to be careful where they walk and move.

I see you feel the need to tease your viewers at the beginning of your video in order to get them to stick around for 6+ minutes. It's amusing, but unnecessary. Perhaps you underestimate the loyalty of your fickle fans. As for me, I take this entire build series as a teaser for what I assume will be ultimately produced: an actual exploratory excursion to the North (or South) using Alen, the anticipation of which builds with every episode, Crocks asside. Thanks for sharing your progress with Alen as well as your humor and wit.

Thanks John. Just playing around pre-pre-credits sequence to see what works. As for the trip, you'll be pleased to know I'm making the first enquiries about freight/transit options north.

Speaking of Crocks is there any consideration needed taken for arctic conditions, I'm thinking maybe cleats could come in useful?

I would have gone a different route and made a spot-light enclosure with a clear plastic dome. At least put in some side windows so that you don't intentionally reduce the light's usable range of motion.
@AlexHibbertOriginals
@AlexHibbertOriginals 2 жыл бұрын
Side windows, probably going to happen. A plastic dome would be difficult to make strong enough, at an affordable cost, to stand on, and withstand powerful waves.

Needs big draining holes of course. Otherwise the water will pool on it and it will turn into block of ice.
@AlexHibbertOriginals

Ultimately they are made of solid metal. You need to avoid uncontrolled collisions with them. But this will help avoid a sideways slip.

We have to find permanent replacement to these deathtraps. I suggest chain-link ladders. I remember seeing good ones on Norwegian submarine. They work even when the boat is covered with thick layer of ice.
@PasiSavolainen
@PasiSavolainen 2 жыл бұрын
I think they would work better if attached from below the step. The straight aluminum angle-edge is very slippery sideways, so maybe a couple of notches with angle grinder?
@Leightr
@Leightr 2 жыл бұрын
@@PasiSavolainen I like the notches idea, so even an oversize muckluck wider than the step wouldn't side-slip.

Climbing up and on top still looks sketchy ... presumably at sea you'd be wearing a safety tether ?

Going up on deck isn't going to be a regular occurrence, especially in big seas. But yes, a harness if not moored/on calm seas.
