It has been the worst summer in NSW for drownings and over 90 people across Australia have lost their lives. I created this video to bring awareness to rip safety, Please watch and share and I hope you learn a thing or two please do not swim in Rips this is for educational purposes, always Swim Between the red & yellow flags 🟥🟨 In this video I talk and demonstrate on how to
- Spot rips
- How rips work
- Remain calm do not panic
- Asses the situation
- Determine which way you are moving in the rip
- How rips move in all different shapes and sizes
- What to do if you get stuck in a rip
- Different floating techniques
- Fight or flight
- Rescuers drown too always use a floatation device
- If you are strong swimmer you can aim for the waves either side and the energy and momentum will take you back to shore.
- Always swim at patrolled beaches
- How far rips actually take you out to sea
- How far you drift from the original location
I hope everyone takes something away from this to raise awareness and life skill tips to help you not only save your own life but help others too ❤️ a big thank you to Ben King for filming and bringing this to life #rescue #lifeguardmaxi #educate #watersafety #lifeguard #lifeguarding #rip #current #surf #beach #water #waves #bondi #bondibeach #sydney #australia #livelearnsurvive #beach #maxisrescuesquad #learn #onlinelearning #swim #drowningprevention #pool

Fantastic video Maxi! They should be playing this down at Bondi 24/7 with multilingual subtitles. I love seeing how you're just as passionate now, if not more so, for ocean safety than when you first started out as a kid. Keep up the phenomenal work!

Thanks for this video. I'm a strong swimmer, and I know not to fight a rip, at most to swim at a diagonal away from it, but I didn't know it could go in so many directions. And honestly seeing how dangerous backpacker's rip is, I was feeling a bit uncomfortable not knowing enough about rips. This hands on instruction video is exactly what I needed! Thanks

I live nowhere near a beach, but my god, the way I am internalising this information right now like I have an exam in 10 minutes. Yeah, very grateful for this, I love the demonstration, it really makes it understandable for a beginner/non-swimmer!

One of the main reasons that people panic when caught in a rip is the fear of sharks.

I live 8 hours from the ocean but i do go on vacations in the gulf or Bahamas and rips are one of my biggest fears. I watch these videos to be prepared just in case. I think there have been something like 8 or 9 deaths via rip currents in the last 6 days in AMERICA. thanks for sharing.

When I was a kid (10-11 years old), my little brother and I floated away in a inflatable donut, when we noticed, we were I think 200m from shore. I will never forget that feeling, I jumped right out of my donut and immediately went head under, without the ability to touch the bottom, that was the point where my little brother panicked. We must've been in a rip that took us away, somehow I could remain calm and I started swimming back to shore on my back, also bringing my brother and those stupid donuts back 😂 Just like you said, I used the waves to guide us instinctively, the reason we survived so young is because learning how to swim is mandatory where I'm from (the Netherlands), that simple ability saved mine and my brothers life.

Great video mate. I grew up going to the ocean and surfed as I got older. I've been caught in rips before but it has always been on my board when I was too focused on looking for sets and not turning around enough towards the beach to check my position. You video was a great demonstration of the dynamics and how to handle the situation.

I watch this Bondi beach channel all the time. I live in Texas far away from a beach. But I do watch these videos just in case I am ever at the beach and get caught unaware of rips - I’m not a good swimmer at all so use these videos as educational for myself. Thank you - I’d never known that I’d get back to shore if I stayed calm. I thought I’d end up in the middle of the ocean. Again, thank you so very much. Dallas, Texas

Wish I’d seen this in the early 90’s when I was in Queensland on holiday, both myself and a friend were caught in a rip, she was dragged in by two girls swimming and I just managed to catch a wave and it pushed me back to land, it was a very scary situation, literally my life flashed before my eyes all I could think of was how was my parents going to ship my body back to Britain.

Very interesting and informative vedio. All those ocean goers should know about this. You said it right when in trouble be Calm you save yourself Recently in Nov 2023 it happened to me in KurlKurl beach Sydney. I was in sea netween red and yellow flag but suddenly just for about 10m from shore I could not touch bottom . Realised that something amiss and tried to swim back to shore with full force but soon realised that I couldn't n just started floating on my back that helped me and current took me few meters away. By the time lifeguard saw me from the shore and informed the surfer he came near to me and asked are you OK. I said need help he removed from the sea using surf boat and put on shore. Big lesson learnt You said keep calm and float you save yourself. Thanks for the vedio

If I’m not mistaken, the rip doesn’t really take you back you have to see where the waves are and then body surface them back if you’re a strong enough swimmer

I got stuck in a Rip current in pensacola florida at dusk dawn. There was a wedding on the beach and I was screaming help they ignored me. I was waving at my boyfriend and he was waving back thinking I was just having fun. I seen my life flash before my eyes, my family, my son, my life that was it I was a goner, from a distance a see a life gaurd packing her stuff up for the day. I started screaming help help helpppppppppppp, Now my bfriend jumped up in a panic. The life guard came running out like Pam Anderson on baywatch and saved me. I was crying from embarasment and scared outta breath she told me dont cry and feel that way. She said the week before a 65 yr old man didnt survive a rip in the same area and that it happens alot. She said next time swim paralel to rip till hit shore. Not to worry, this scared me soooooo Bad I will never step foot in water at beach evvvvver agian. Period.

Agree with the comments but it does not look like he is in a rip current. Perhaps he is just trying to simulate one. Rips on the Atlantic side of the US will pull one out quick plus there are usually waves to contend with as well.

Yeah, pretty good mate! Now show them how to float by holding their breath for 20 seconds, and then handle waves going over them, and being okay with being underwater a bit. And finally showing them that they don't have to have their head and mouth as far out of the water as possible, just to get a breath of air. (As in - watch how olympic swimmers breathe!) Maybe also explain that a breaking wave is just a CYCLE of SHORE-GOING ENERGY, picking you up and then dumping you under, round and round. Till it dumps you ashore!
