@@lifeinmyelement I once was in between jobs and figured I'd go hike this trail in Colorado called 'The Colorado Trail' before going back to work. In my head my math was that it was only 500 miles so I could probably finish it in a week. Obviously had never hiked in my life, regardless I went for it and sent it. Greatest month of my life, I've been chasing the high ever since! Congratulations!

Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. Personally, I would like to thank you for being respectful of the firefighters that were in the areas you were hiking in. I volunteer with the USFS as a tour guide in the summer. Part of our local crew was out there fighting fires this past summer. I always worry about our folks when they are out that way. Thanks for not adding to the risks they are already taking. I am glad that you had this experience. When you get as old as me (that profile pic of me is 30 years old), you are going to have so many wonderful memories. If you are ever heading to Minnesota, shoot me a message. I can share some of my favorite places to see here. The Mississippi River has its humble beginnings about 30 miles from where I live.

Congratulations for doing the trail and finishing it. I find in whatever activity or situation chosen or not that pushes you beyond comfort zones always comes with difficulties and a need to persist through the process of getting to the other side. At the time it may have ups and downs and can even wreck your life in the moment. But at some point you realize how it changed you and that you end up finding out important things about yourself that you must do or pursue. You’re not the same person. It’s these kinds of life experiences that are guiding us to deeper levels of personal meaning and growth. I’ve gone through many from a horrible hurricane to more recently an African Safari. I know where my heart is calling. It’s one of those things that you won’t deny because it’s that important to feed your soul. Keep following your heart. It’s unexplainable in a lot of ways and only you get it on those levels which means it’s exactly where you’re meant to be ❤

Congratulations! I have walked many sections of the trail over my 80 year life but when it came time to do my "thing" of the complete hike as you did, it was too late in years for me. So, way to go! You did it. There is nothing more to say. I was a member of an NCAA championship track team back in 1966. It was an interesting achievement but just another chit in a long life. I say, you did it!!! Say no more. I feel a pride in you for your ability , desire, and the follow-through to do it. That is the essence of life, those who do and those who don't do. Done! 😎

Absoutely amazing, Rosa! I haven't done a thru-hike, but I related to much of what you said about you said about feeling empty, particularly that of feeling like your life isn't good enough even though you know that isn't really true; I've felt that sharp contrast before when I went from a summer job in the CO mountains back East, it can be a doozy. The footage you shared is breathtaking! And the Marmot sighting was pure happiness.😊Here's to finding the path again! 💛

Thank you so much for answering these questions realistically and honestly! I dream of doing a big hike like the PCT one day, and just like with your vanlife videos, it's such a breath of fresh air for someone to list out all of the highs and lows. I'm sorry to hear you've been feeling low since leaving the trail. I hope you know how much us viewers appreciate your work and what you share with us, especially since I think most of us dont have the means to do the same thing (at least for now). Hopefully, that at least gives you a tiny spark of purpose. I believe there's so much we're all here on this earth for, even if we can't always see the impact we have. 💛 So happy you made it back safe!

The post trail depression is so real. I remember feeling borderline embarrassed coming home to 24 rolls of toilet paper the day we finished the JMT. We had spent three weeks carefully dividing just three rolls between the two of us - and then suddenly it was just so available. Along with everything else. Felt oddly dystopian for the first few days. I can’t even imagine how it must feel after the PCT

psycologically it's better off to set goals that are evolving and improving, essentially something that you can never achieve and yet you get closer and closer to it. Never get stuck with one goal and exhaust all of your energy to it. Be part of communities around you and get irritated by people, that will also help you getting distracted from the emptiness. Cheers

Post Trail Depression- when thru-hiking, there is a clear, highly motivated purpose and reason for getting out of bed. To me, this is what nurtures our Spiritual Health. It's about what matters to us at our core, our essence, our soul, our spirit. It's our reason(s) that drive us each day. This definition is fully inclusive. If someone's reason to get out of bed each day is to serve God, take care of their family, plan a wedding, train for a race, school, work, etc, so be it. When our Spiritual Health is not being nurtured, it can feel very empty, sad, & depressing. So, finding the things that matter to us and pursuing them is critical for our wellbeing. ☮️❤️🤝

@@focusdecorating3637 I've been asking myself that question for months. Re-hike a trail, new trails, go to Europe, try van life? In recent weeks I've gotten 8 invitations to hike with friends all over the US and in Europe too. So that is 2 out of three: hiking and Europe. If the perfect van shows up, then I'll grab it, but no rush.
@focusdecorating3637Ай бұрын
@@kittyhawkhiking You could always re-hike trails going the opposite way - completely different experience, although ive never actually done it personally. Have you ever heard of the Camino De Santiago ? There are all different paths from different countries. I have made the decision if I can sell my van before early Jan then im going to do the Camino from Lisbon, as plane tickets from Manchester, UK to there are about £25 atm. Then come home and buy a smaller van lol

The post trail depression is real. Even though my thru of the Colorado trail was only about a month and a half it is still effecting me quite strongly three months later. The experience definitely changed the course of the rest of my life though. The trail was supposed to be a one great adventure before I settle down and get a good career job but now I have all these ideas of starting van life this spring, traveling and doing seasonal work, pct 2026, etc. Somehow I simultaneously feel the most and least motivated I have ever been.

That's interesting you said this restored your faith in humanity. I rode a bicycle from Roanoke Virginia to Columbus Ohio when I was homeless and carless without a penny to my name. Took me 2 weeks and after the first week my butt was very sore but I was determined to get out of the drinking and partying I was doing nothing with my life for a year or so in Virginia as a young adult. That trip was a amazing and there were so many kind people along the way that just stopped to help like a lady that passed me multiple times climbing a mountain or this preacher in a small town who bought me 2 meals. There was also one really hot day I couldn't resist taking a rest under a really big nice looking tree and this lady that lived nearby noticed me and asked if I needed food or something to drink. There's so many kind people out there and I believe their life is made better knowing they could help someone else no matter how small it may be. I'm in Oregon now working doing wine shipping so it was funny to see you pop champagne. I live in a van now and like to spend time after work walking around to see if there's people I can help or talk to. I found both last night - a lady who had a positive vibe but kept mentioning everything that could go wrong had happened to her and she wondered what it would've been like to have parents like mine who sheltered me from the world. She seemed to only have a wet sleeping bag in her possession and wanted to dry it so I gave twice as much money as she asked for and after hours of chatting we parted ways. I had to find a place to park and prepare for work and she had a sleeping bag to dry. I'm very grateful for my van and not having to sleep in the rain. That's one of the things I told her that helps me not get too depressed or blue, just being thankful for what I have no matter how little cuz someone has it worse. it's hard for the seeds of depression to take root in a thankful heart. I believe there's two ways to live life, the way of give and the way of get. I've always been happier and more fulfilled loving the latter way of give - treating people the way I would like to be treated. Another side thought from before, I've noticed through my travels - the further you get from dense populations and cities the more kind people you meet.. it's no wonder the Bible told us to spread out over the earth. Weather or not you believe in higher powers the wisdom in the Bible is undeniable and testable scientifically in your own life. It was written by intelligent people who had a lot of good advice. Another thing I've noticed is almost everyone worships something, whether it's their phone, video games, woke ideology, Satan, or God. It's almost as if we're unable not to, almost like religion is a drug that even when we quit we pick up another one that might be more destructive. Personally I believe in God because I've seen Satan or his demonic powers throughout my life but also had miraculous unexplainable events happen that saved my life including being brought back to life after an overdose. I think it's great you promote and motivate people to step outside the cities and their comfort zones, you're quite selfless in sharing your experiences and thoughts and that is beautiful! Thank you, for giving us all some reasons to hold onto hope for tomorrow. Warmed my heart hearing about this experience because I know just what you mean and I wish more people did about the kindness of strangers. That's why when Tucker Carlson is ranting on KZbin about how most people are decent I actually believe him, it's the drugs and the cities that are the issue not us inherently. I'm also speaking in general terms, always exceptions especially considering the health epidemic we're starting to wake up to being in the midst of.

happy to hear your planning more thru-hiking adventure's! Also just love hearing you, seeing your adventures you're such a beautiful person in whole! I do want to say I hope you find a partner to share these adventures with! I think even after they end you won't feel so lost if you had some one to lean on, cause that's just being human. we all need it the feeling of belonging and that's what you got on the trail. Not just a reason to get up working on a goal to work towards, the trail gave you a sense of belonging that you miss and yearn for it again! I hope this does not come off as anything but sincere, just truly want you to be happy and just saying having some one to share life with will definitely help with the lost feeling after ending a such great feet! one other thing CONGRATS!! that you made it all the way, thats so damn cool!!!

Your description of how optimistic and full of hope everyone was going through Southern CA is very similar to something I go through every year leading up to Christmas. Starting in November, I feel hopeful, optimistic, and romantic about Christmas. I love decorating, picking out gifts for people, and planning what I'm going to cook. But when Christmas day comes, I realize that I enjoyed the days leading up to it, but not so much the day itself.

I think you're pretty amazing & from the way you describe the "depression", it's something you'll get through. You're extremely articulate, you express your experiences as well as any college graduate I've ever heard! As for college, you'll go if & when you get there. You have an amazing future!! BTW, I was planning to do van life until covid happened. I got stuck in SO CA!! Due to financial issues AND AGE - I decided to not do it. I regret it, but --- that's the way it goes. Have fun in your travels & your life & stay safe.

Something that calmed me in college was a friend that told me to stop and smell the roses. I thought whatever, fuff. As I grew older it started to make sense, enjoy the fruits of your labor. If you can't see that maybe you need to change your view at it. It's one of those things you have to experience yourself, and it may take some time.

Wow. I so loved this video. Thank you for sharing! I wanna say this: You doing THAT (and sharing your thoughts and reasons) are a huge source of inspiration to me as I begin a 5-ish-month decision/endeavor where life will be completely different -- grinding daily -- with a clear destination. I need to channel a lot of your "stubbornness". Q: "Did you think you might not finish it?" You:"No!". Me: "If Rosa can endure that (much bigger thing) for 5 months, then I know I can channel that strength and do my (much less demanding) thing." I seriously said that out loud a few times this week. :) So, thank you, you crazy influencer/inspiration. Keep going!

Congrats!! The southern portion of the Sierras just got their first dusting last week. Hoping that's a good sign and maybe some snow will fall in the Tehachapi Valley soon. Just get back out west and get your head straight. I know that a lot of people from other countries will do the PCT, but it is interesting how generous folks are in this country helping others without any expectation of a receiving anything in return.

What an amazing hike. Thanks for sharing and being yourself. Thanks for chugging the champagne bottle for all of us to see....lol. So cool just being yourself. You're living with so little but yet you have so much more than others do. You got your freedom, and the freedom to be you. There are people that have bookoo bucks so much more money than we do, but we got one thing that all their money can't buy. We are not tied down by what society expects us to be, and that in itself can be very fulfilling. Cheers 🥂

This world is bent on the 'need to achieve/succeed'. As a species we need to learn to undo that kind of thinking. Being kinder and more gentle to ourselves and each other is so much more an accomplishment than all the exterior motives. Just being allowed to wake up another day, and enjoy the gift of life is an accomplishment. Don't be so hard on yourself girl! You are amazing, whether you stay in bed all day and daydream, or hike 2600 miles. The choices you make for your life are yours and yours alone--and most of all sacred.

Hey there, very informative video and keeping it real ! Thank you. Super well done on the amazing achievement also. I quit my job a few years ago and then the next day was on The Pennine Way (in UK) doing my first multi day hike on my own in a bivvy bag. It took my 13days. Its completely changed my perspective on life and made me realise whats most important to me - my own happiness being paramount. When I approached the end I started crying, not like full on crying but crying it had all come to an end. I wanted to turn round and do it all again but did not have the money to do so plus my trainers where on their last legs. I defo had depression issues after it also and this was nowhere the length of your hike. I get the same depression issues after every multi day hike now ive noticed and just accept it is what it is. What goes up must come down and all that ! Interesting you talk about not needing any training whatsoever before a hike, I think this also as the trail will make you fit, our bodies will create muscles where we need them most. Really want to do Appalacian Trail at some point, I cannot imagine how good it would be spending 5 months just doing that.
