First Love ;) @ Jankoji House Common Room So its mid July 1988 .... my first day at boarding school, and a couple of weeks short of my eighth birthday. By evening the realization sinks in that I won't be seeing my parents and brother for a while. After the Sunset Ceremony, my “Pardner” (an older student who is supposed to show me the ropes) takes me to the Common room to cheer me up. I’m greeted by the lilting teenage voice of a certain Pakistani prodigy, singing “Aap Jaisa Koi meri Zindagi mein aaye" on the well preserved record player. It’s the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard in my life, telling me precisely what I need to hear at that exact moment. And it’s playing on full volume, since the Common Room is the one place on the premises where the Rule of Pin Drop Silence does not apply. The room is full of older students in immaculate white kurta pyjamas, blithely playing Table Tennis, Carrom or Chess, or yapping about the vacations they have just returned from. A few are perusing well-thumbed Enid Blytons and Commando comics over the din of juvenile voices and music, while somebody is inspecting a framed House Photograph from yesteryear hanging on a whitewashed wall. Somebody is chasing someone else, chucking chappals past his laughing head, in mock retaliation for some perceived slight. Introductions are made, backgrounds exchanged, friendships initiated. My heart automatically lightens up. I say to myself “Hmm… nice place.” And 30 years later I can still hear Nazia Hassan welcoming me in. :)

listen to this and then the studio version which sounds so processed, there is such a warmth and frailty in the live version, proving yet again that modern day autotune and over produced vocals will never beat the imperfections of the real human voice.
