It is for the same reason that Aristotle is being buried. It is in Aristotle's virtue ethics that the Stoics derived their principles. But much simplification was made because Aristotle is more demanding in the development of virtue. The Heroic Character (fighting for what is right, even if the chance of defeat is high) was completely forgotten. In the end, modern stoicism has been converted into a product to increase productivity. A performance-driven society in which one's life becomes a product to be sold to a market. People became obsessed with seeking an ideal performance for work and aesthetics and forgot their roots, their honor, and God.

"If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself. But to your estimate of it". This stoic quote by Marcus Aurelius doesn't necessarily mean to ignore the pain inflicted upon you by an enemy which is so naive but there are things in life that are out of your control which you should tolerate and deal with rather than to complain and suffer like a child. That is the main tenets of stoicism but not to prefer to be weak and helpless victim.
@wantedpwner8 ай бұрын
EXACTLY. This is what I think as well. It is about staying strong and keeping going if you fall to the ground or are hurt. Understanding why it happened can help you avoid it like Grim Hustle here says. To be fucking honest, if you don't listen to both this KZbin channel and the ancient philosophy of Stoicism (btw, stoicism and Stoicism are separate things), and even if you ignore ALL IDEOLOGIES AND BELIEFS, it remains FUCKING LOGICAL from the standpoint of evolution to adapt to conditions. Depression and sadness is a way to wake up, but it can be a way to give up too. You need to keep going, no matter what the fuck is happening. It's natural, going beyond any human idea.
@iEMMANU3L8 ай бұрын
He wasn’t saying ignore the pain. It was in conjuncture to how the modern day stoicism speaks about how to deal and accept said pain period. Nothing more. True level of stoicism is the intertwining of God’s purpose for said pain and the strength He gave you to endure, succeed and grow from.
@wishesandfishes8 ай бұрын
I disagree - stocism actively promotes a passive "make the best of it mindset". Just read Zeno of Citium's parable of the dog and the cart. At no point does he suggest the possibility of overpowering the cart and asserting one's destiny or will - he only promptes a "higher" form of slavishness by following the will of the cart as though it was his own.

Just as an example of the quote, say you meet a woman, you end up falling for her but she chooses someone else. That is suffering and it is external pain, physically you are unhurt but mentally you are distressed. What the quote means by your estimation of it is that your interpretation of the events is causing you pain, not the thing itself. Many people in life give themselves pain the quote is about not letting your thoughts weaken you. It isn't about being a punching bag.

You were never a stoic; you are an epicurean at best using sophist rhetoric to promote your own ideas. Life is more than pleasure and pain, and if you wish to live a happy life it is within your power to do so. What's more is that you can do so right now. “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself in your way of thinking.” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations Stoics fear only abdicating their responsibility and failing to live up to their potential as a human being. You know, philosophy is the great equalizer, both a slave and an emperor can be a stoic. I notice you point out the emperor, but do you know of the slave Epictetus? “It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” ― Epictetus You see this video has nothing to do with stoicism but everything to do with your agenda. You are not a stoic, nor a philosopher. You see the world as nothing more than pain and pleasure and what's more you abdicate your responsibility and place it on some unknowable other, some boogieman. “Here is a rule to remember in future, when anything tempts you to feel bitter: not "This is misfortune," but "To bear this worthily is good fortune.” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations You know Marcus has the perfect explanation of god or gods. If god or gods exists and they're good then they won't care how devout you have been, but rather how good or virtuous you are. If god or gods exist and they're evil then it is better not to have worshipped them. If no gods exist than it is worth it to be remember by you friends and kin as a good man. You see we are meant to live in accordance with our nature as rational social animals. We live for each other so we must educate them, or bear with them. We are meant to be virtuous and virtue is knowledge and vice is ignorance.

In the ancient world, even in Marcus Aurelius, Stoicism and Epicureanism both became huge coping mechanisms. Reading Epictetus should be a starting point to understand Stoicism. He literally tells you to be ready to die for what is right and not be afraid of it. Anyway, the guy in the video is a complete idiot pushing his empty conspiracy fear-mongering theories and making enemies out of thin air. He critiques stoicism for all the wrong reasons you can obviously see his bias, as a middle aged russian man having lived under the totalitarian soveti regime. The truth is that duffering is an unavoidable part of existence. You can overthrow governments but you can't trascend death. Stoicism, like numerous other ideologies provides an answer to that. Also, the liberating stoic idea of asuming responsibility only for what you can control is the basis of many modern psychotherapeutic approaches and dare I add, an indispensable part of a balanced life. I understand the distrust towards whatever buzzword ideology gains ground in the mainstream, though I can't excuse people proceeding to critique it without understanding it or presenting it fairly. This video is a prime example of that. The fact that this guy speaks in a serious tone and stares at the camera like a psycho doesn't mean he has well-informed philosophical opinions. It turned into a competition of who can go the longest without and believing it gave them super powers when in reality it really teaches discipline. If you master yourself you can do anything.

The biggest con job is the premise foisted on us ‘don’t blame others for your problems’ !
@aw22698 ай бұрын
I disagree actually. The meaning of it is not to take blame for others, but to not waste the energy on blaming. Identify the source of your problems and fix it - this is the meaning, and this is how it should be interpreted. Stoicyzm itself and stoic philosophers are not the problem - problem is interpretation or rather narrative around it.

Marcus Aurelius isn't modern stoicism. He is actual, original source stoicism. Modern stoicism is guys like Holiday, Pigliucci etc.

Just to make sure we're all on the same page - it's not the classical stoics who excluded God (or any form of higher power for that matter) from their philosophy. It's those who sell it to us today who did. "The Gods did all they could - through their gifts, their help, their inspiration - to ensure that I could live as nature demands. And if I've failed, it's no one's fault but mine. Because I didn't pay attention to what they told me - to what they taught me, practically, step by step." -Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, book one, Gregory Hays translation
