Recently got diagnosed with stage 2 brain cancer at 28. Had to have a tumor removed. Lot of people around me acting like it’s the end of the world for me. While I meanwhile remember these lessons of Aurelius and am very ambivalent to the news. It just is what it is, if I die I die. Oh well. Edit: to those wishing me well, thank you. I am still alive. Edit: May 15, 2024 Still here. Goin strong, some days feels like Mind over Matter is a genuine help. Edit: September 20th, 2024. They removed the last tumor. It shifted enough they could get to it without damaging deep brain tissue. I am cancer free. Thank you to all those giving well wishes this entire time. Final edit October 4th: I stayed strong to deal with mine, now it’s my grandma’s turn and it’s hitting her a lot worse than mine ever did to me. I had my youth at least to fight back long enough to beat it. She does not have that energy. So with mine dealt with, I head now to take care of her with hers. If you are to give wishes of encouragement and support, please send it her way. I beg you. Please. Stay strong.

I think social media causes people to live simultaneously in their future and past. People go out to social events , not to have fun, but to film themselves being there. They are so excited to post their present in the future, just so people will be happy or jealous for their yesterday. Never truly living in the present. Be where your feet are, enjoy your present because it is the only true reality.

This is actually exactly how I survived being diagnosed with MS and put on 2 different types of chemo for it. From 2015 to 2022, I had to stop caring to survive. I had to stop caring about everything I was losing in the process. Luckily I have no children so as hard as losing everything is, I consider myself lucky. I had to stop caring about my career that I could no longer do. Had to stop caring about my awesome credit, my car I was losing, my independence, my education (cannot work in my field of choice). Best thing I ever told myself was to stop caring about everything but my health in which I could control. 7 years later and picking up where I left off finally. Hoping I can get off disability and stay off while not caring. It’s a weird place to be in when getting an education.

The problem is one cannot just “flush away” the past by not thinking about it. The past can be with us as trauma that does not manifest as thoughts but instead, emotions and behaviors that can be from very buried sources. We amount in the present as a culmination of our genetics, upbringing, choices made and not made, and of course, randomness. Therefore, though we only live in the present, a sliver of time, the past always lives within us. It is true that we should let go of that which we have no control over that is external to us, but past events that shape us (internal) cannot just be let go of. Don’t dwell on the past but learn from it. Great video overall as usual

isn't this the problem that stoicism is 'made' for dealing with? or at least to me seem to be most applicable to. basically trying to go 'outside of yourself' in order to get a more objective view of an emotional problem - rather than digging into the emotional and getting triggered.

Most suffering is caused by the mind when you have too much time to think and your mind isn't fully occupied. My solution is to stay busy and keep my mind fully occupied in my work, hobbies, and interactions with people and fill my head with positive media (TV shows etc.) This keeps me fully in the moment and gives me no time for my mind to wander and think about the past or future or things I don't have or anything. I have found that keeping my mind fully occupied is the absolute best medicine and way to stay happy. It doesn't take a lot of philosophy or deep thinking to do either, just stay fully engaged in the moment through positive activities and you will crowd negativity right out. The only time I'm really unhappy is when I'm left with too much time where I'm mentally unoccupied to think.

I have been suffering lately, because of the things that happened in the past, and I have extreme worries of my future. When I was okay, I have always thought that I am a rational thinker, yet when things began to break lose, it just shuttered me to my core. It affected my entirety. I felt like I was stuck to nothingness. After watching this video, I feel like or rather it made me realize that I have been marinating my self to suffering by regretting the past and worrying about the future, that I forgot how to live in the present. This video opened my eyes into a new perspective, I appreciate it so much, thank you. This is the kind of philosophy I need right now.

I feel like philosophy is telling you what you already know. As a kid i stopped caring and it helped with bullying or anything really. It was easier when i felt happy and stable. But now everything hurts again and i feel isolated and alone. Its been years feeling more and more depressed. I keep overthinking with chaos in my mind. Hopefully i can take the childhood-like wisdom and feel more okay again.

As a kid i always accepted things. But i think that's so much easier when you're not depressed, and you're feeling okay. Not the mood swings from high to low, but, feeling okay. It's a feeling i miss. I miss my childhood and according to this philosophy i should move on in life, but, it feels like it's too hurtful to me...

I think about this often. Being a child is being ignorant to the worlds chaos. You have a child like innocence where everything and anything is possible. Not saying that everyone’s childhood is grand or easy. Mine sure wasn’t. But I do miss the feeling of possibility and not worrying about things, I just wanted a new toy and maybe some nuggets but the weight of the world wasn’t SO heavy. As we grow older we lose touch with that sparkle. But I think it’s never too late. I’m in a similar place as you now. But within the 7 months you’ve posted this. If I may add to this quote, the words from a another person whos also a therapist, said to me, "Expect the worst, hope for the best. But reality is often somewhere in the middle" Which I found to be quite true when I reflect back on past events while holding on to the quote. It's a refreshing addition, that gives me more control on how I position myself towards the events going to unfold in the future or from the past, and also helps a lot in tuning down anxiety. Reading this quote made me want to reply and share this wisdom as well.

I reached Aurelius logic by myself as a way to deal with my anxiety over dead. After much reasoning i understood that whatever might happen, if anything happens I would adapt, just as i have adapted to many situations, pleasurable and miserable through my life. I have also seen others manage to adapt to worst situations. Just as we cried when getting born and then we learned not to cry for everything, if something comes after death or nothing comes i will adapt, i might suffer but if thats the case suffering would never last forever. A medium, a balance will be achieved, at least if i remain conscious. Aurelius way of thinking is similar to my reasoning. Whatever might happen, you will deal with it. Another idea i created that helped me deal with the fear of death is that we have died every single day since we got born. We die everytime we go to sleep. The person you were 10 years ago is not the person you are today. You like other things, you apreciate different things. You want and desire different things. Your values, your needs are different. You are a clone of the you in the past. You remember different things and forgot many others. You are another person, even at a cellular level. So, you got practice dying and you did it naturally and even with pleasure every night you went to sleep and never you imagined you would die and another you would be alive the next morning. Your conscious "shut down", rewritten and turned on every single day.

I was jealous of everyone for years because of my insecurities and weaknesses. But then I made a New Year resolution to end it, because I realized something. I do not believe in society anymore. I say two words to ultimately eliminate the self-doubt that tries to attack me: screw norms. I'm 27, still live at home, having _never_ moved out. I have never had a girlfriend or a date, and I don't even have a driver's license. I have both a learning disability and ASD, and sometimes I say unfiltered things or act weird in social moments. I assume my ASD makes me "less normal." I don't have too many friends now that I've graduated from college and most of my friends have left town. My coworkers all seem to fit in; I usually stand out. I used to feel like a misfit at work, but now I realize that it's not a big deal. It's just they're not my people, they're each other's only. If my ASD makes them not like me enough, that's their problem. Sure, I don't have a great filter, but it doesn't define me; nobody is perfect. I don't care if people find me weird or annoying. I don't care that my both my sisters have boyfriends and started dating at 16 while I've always been single. I don't care that I can't drive. I don't care that I appear dopey because of my learning disability. I don't care that I graduated high school at _TWENTY._ I don't care that I seem slow and helpless and do better with a guide than by myself (my boss basically said that to my face). I don't care that I still live with my mom. I don't care that I went to a small charter school than the "superior" public school that has many more activities, adventures, and organizations. I don't care about any of my weaknesses; I still have confidence in myself. It doesn't matter what others think of me, it's what I think of myself that matters. I will never fall for society's tricks again; society is buIIshit, and that would explain our government and political leaders. I say "SCREW NORMS!" I am absolutely fine the way I am, I say confidently. I am not a loser. A disabled man who doesn't match standards, yes, but not a loser. There is nothing wrong with being different. Different is good. Normal is boring.

I used to be concerned about my future retirement funding but then witnessed several of my colleagues and my parents dying at 52,59,64,65 without collecting a cent to enjoy their non working lives. I also became very aware of my own mortality so just got out of my soul destroying, stressful job. Then there’s another perspective. You could be 15 years old killed as a soldier in WW1 or 19 in Vietnam. Or, be really wealthy as bond broker at 32 but killed in The Twin Towers or in the Bali bombing. I’ve switched to focus on lifestyle, health and enjoying free things ( hiking, discovery, nature, beaches , sunshine ) and from a life of chasing big houses, supercars and high class social events . I stopped drinking and smoking 12 years ago , go to the gym daily, take spas and saunas and focus on bringing down my stress levels. I spend very little and don’t need much. You have to ask; ‘ which jerk are you trying to impress, who doesn’t give a toss about you and will never visit you on your deathbed ‘. In my career I travelled and visited 38 countries. I don’t need to spend on cruises . I’m lucky that I reached my goals: no debts, live by a beach in a tropical climate with a low living cost. New York is 238 % more expensive. My ex colleague retired with huge savings at 63. He took his wife from the U.K. to Cancun on a long vacation. He caught bacterial meningitis at 64 and died in a hospital bed in Mexico without his kids being there to say good bye.

I've noticed that often such young people are constantly trying to make the world perfect, for them. Because they grew up insulated from adversity and were indulged. So they won't even consider possibilities outside their own limited comfort to allow for normal variations in mood or difficulty. For instance it never occurs to them that someone may have just had a confronting situation and could be slightly affected by it so they don't behave absolutely perfectly. It's zero tolerance from them. Very sooky and intolerant people. If someone is acting a bit stressed I tell myself that I don't know all their story so best assume the best from them and encourage the best without getting all stressed about forcing. Next time you see them they may well explain themselves, or not.

Avoiding feeling is a great way to avoid the experience of living. No animal ever experienced their own death. Death means the absence of metabolic functioning - all the activities needed to be consious of anything - including being conscious of sleeping or conscious of nothing. If I die when I am awake, I wont experience it. There will be nothing happening inside my body - no experience is possible. No need to fear - you will think you live for ever - because you will never experience death. "I don't want to live for ever, I just want to live while I'm alive."

I used to say “if you stop caring it stops hurting” a lot when I was 13. I had to try to throw it out because if I don’t care about anything than I don’t care if I wake up tomorrow or get my responsibilities done or about my needs

Exactly! Someone in these comments pointed out that he had chronic pain issues but overcame them through rationalization. Yeah, I’m sure the opium had nothing to do with it. Or being an emperor I.e. privileged.

You've completely missed the point. The stoics didn't say to stop living, they said to stop worrying about things beyond your control. You'll definitely end up broke if you don't even do the things you CAN control, so do the best you reasonably can and call it good enough.

this came at a great timing. I was suffering in my own head about the fact I didnt pass my driving test. I was exhausted, constantly thinking how much of a failure I was. I am making this comment in hopes that when I pass the test, I can remember this as such a small event...

I have this thing where if something truly heartbreaking happens to me or I’m losing my mind (about to take stage in front of a theater full of SILENT people), I try to zoom out and look at the cosmic picture. You can barely see our *sun* from several light years away…what happens here has never mattered to the greater cosmos on ANY level. Not only that but it’ll soon be forgotten, even on earth. It doesn’t work in every instance…for example, you would never think “so what if I kill this chick and dump her body in a lonely grave…Glip Glorp from the sombrero galaxy will never find out”. I guess if you’re the type of person who needs to be told that, none of this is going to be of any use anyway. But for things that either don’t matter or stuff that FEELS like the end of the world, it truly helps. Next time you’re about to speak in public or ask someone out, just zoom out and realize that none of this matters. In a hundred years, nobody’s gonna remember. Life becomes much easier when you stop catastrophizing everything on a cosmic level.

If everyone were thinking like that we would still be on the trees or even extinct, because " nothing matters " What cosmos has to do with your problems ? They are real and important to you and that's enough. A queen ant is nothing to a poor human , he can crash her with his finger ,but it's still a queen for her nest .

something I've told myself from a young age is that "Sometimes you are in a situation that can never change, but your outlook on that situation can always change." i don't always practice this because I am a human and I err but I never realized I was practicing, or at least attempting to practice Stoicism

I used to have an attitude like this. But the last few years and the passing of my wife have led me to a dark place. Every nightmare I have ever had has come true. I just don’t know how to get back. I haven’t been me in over a year. Everything hurts. I just want to be me again. I’m lost and can’t figure out how to get back.😢

Feel your pain without thinking about it. It’s hard but it has helped me to not make it hurt worse. Our thoughts are what make the hurt worse. My mom died more than 20 years ago. I still struggle to this day with feeling alone and unloved and without purpose but I am still here and I am at a better place with myself now. Love never dies.

Skellener give yourself time. Find something that brings you peace. Find a quiet calming place in your home, garden, or travel to somewhere that brings you calm. Use each day to bring yourself a treat. Do something that you enjoy. Make yourself go outside for at least 10 minutes a day. If you’re anxious, walk at a brisk pace to rid yourself from that anxiety. Empty your mind. Eat good food little and often. Be kind to yourself. Slowly you will grow and learn from this phase in your life. You are going through change. I know this because I’ve been there. My husband died young. I didn’t know what to do, or how to be. I did all of the above. There were times I had no energy to get out of bed...but I made myself walk around my garden for 5 minutes to feel the sun on my face. In time I went travelling. Slowly I rebuilt my life. You will too.

I am so new to stoicism..... my plan is to go book hunting at a used book store. Thank you for this presentation. You have a pleasing, melodic tone and not at all preachy and moralizing. Stoicism is for all, not just the rich and famous. I believe that stoicism should be taught beginning at the elementary level in schools, all over north America. Our world would soon be populated with deep, logical thinkers.... we need more stoics running our world..
