WINTER Wild Camp - VANLIFE SUSSEX

This episode was filmed 1st & 2nd December 2022.
We take advantage of a sunny winter day to go away in the little red camper but as we head west towards Petworth, West Sussex the sun disappears in the mist!
On arrival at the Deer Park we spot a van selling toasted sandwiches and hot drinks which is just what we need to warm us up. We can highly recommend @toastmeupuk
We set off on our walk across the Deer Park to Petworth House, a 17th century country house that houses an extensive art collection and is beautifully decorated for Christmas.
Our next stop is the pretty, rural town of Storrington where we dodge the traffic to look around the shops.
We find a quiet park up to enjoy our cakes from ToastMeUp with a warming cup of tea then we move on to our overnight park up at Bramber and have a very tasty Indian meal.
The next morning we explore the Norman church and Bramber Castle. We think we have worked up enough of an appetite for a two-course carvery at The Old Tollgate which was absolutely delicious 🙂

Another excellent video, great quality. The whole video covered the area where I often ride my motorcycle (when its warm). I've been to Petworth quite a few times. Those long, expensive, all encompassing walls were built when the enclosures took place and only the rich could afford to 'steal' the land from the peasantry. In some instances, whole villages were destroyed to make deer parks for the rich. I hate them. I find the kitchens the most interesting parts of Petworth House. The castle at Bramber used to be on the coast. There was a huge sea inlet - now gone and there was a harbour at Stenying, now gone.

I have just discovered this video, a bit late. However, it took me back to my childhood, I was born in Petworth in 1950 (yes I am old) and my Grandmother was kitchen staff at Petworth house when I was a child. So have been in and around Petworth house many times. Was a very interesting video for me as I knew all the places you videod, I live in Menorca, Balearic Islands now, just a little way from Sussex

I always stop off at petworth park to walk my dog when visiting my parents in Billingshurst never seen the toaster van though probably wrong time of day great walks though sometimes the hunt are out exercising the hounds thanks for sharing

Regret not getting lifetime membership for the NT years ago ourselves. I love food vans! A year ago we were deep inside a National Park, it was getting dark and rain threatened (and it came just shortly after our stop). To our surprise we saw a food van in a parking lot. They were selling large hot dogs with everything imaginable you could ask to be put on them. It belonged to two young women fresh out of college. I've never had a hotdog that tasted so good. It might be because of the ambience or that the hotdogs were hot and it was getting cold or that we were surprised to come across this gem in an unusual location. But it is a wonderful memory even if it was just a DOG (what they called them)!

Really enjoyed , loved the area , it always amazes me where did all the people come from to build all that stuff , what was the population in 1066 to 1700 thank god there wasn’t KZbin then or we would still be living in caves. I often think about the work that’s gone into those buildings, a good place for you to go next time your in Wales is the welsh folk museum, think it would be right up your street tags.craft.voters. It’s free but you have to pay for parking , it’s got a restaurant too . Also try carregcennen castle built 1195 ish beautiful views coffee shop and restaurant down below take a torches and go down the dungeon, it not an extensive castle and costs to go in ,but the views are spectacular. reason.winners.routs. We would love to explore the Welsh National Museum of History, it has been on our to do list for a long time so next time we are down that way we will have to pay a visit. Lovely video. My wife and I are also life members of the NT and as we live in Storrington, Petworth is a regular visit for us. One thing you mentioned that was not quite right. Storrington is a village and not a town. If fact it’s one of the largest villages in Sussex. The definition of a village being a community larger than a hamlet, has a place of worship and a central meeting place but is administered from somewhere else as it has no local government. In our case it’s Horsham district council. Thanks for sharing.

Fair do's Ken that's a proper plateful you had in the Carvery. Actually I have spent today thinking of Christmases past in that part of Sussex. When I was younger and my Grandmother, Dad and his brother were still with us it was one Christmas in Chichester/Littlehampton area and one in Teddington/Hampton area. Christmas morning all the men were shooed out of the house with orders not to come back till at least 1.30 or 2.00 so according to weather conditions it was either a walk somewhere and a drive or a trot to the pub. When fine it would be Petworth Grounds or Steyning Bowl, sometimes even up on the downs by Goodwood. I remember the Sussex Christmases much clearer than when the Davey clan trooped up to us in Middlesex. Fond memories which you two have brought to live even more vividly this year. We didn't have Indian and Chinese restaurants then though but a lot of the pubs back then served excellent food. Enjoy your Christmas break and thanks for continuing to post vlogs over this period because as usual there is not much on the TV for those over 6 years of age. As it should be really I suppose, it's a time for kids isn't it? 🎅

It is a time for kids for sure. A good dinner, a little tipple and feet up for some good telly does me. Mind you we don’t watch much traditional TV these days. Christmas used to be a lot of work for the ladies of the house, akin to a military operation. My dad loved to go down the pub and we often got a good telling off for not being back at the appointed time. Happy days. Have a good one 👍

Yes I am glad I found out about the mic problem before it affected all the other clips. I have got into the habit of testing the clips using an SD adapter and my phone these days. Saves a lot of hassle later. That carvery is a good one. Only been twice but the standards are the same. It was a big plate and I felt it all the way home 😁👍

New camera does look good I have their new one too often as not for dashcam Audio is Ok once you get right connections no need for special adapter. Battery life is really impressive

Wild Camping is when you put a pack on your back wander into the mountains and sleep in a bivi-bag or small tent definately NOT in a campervan parked at the side of a road.

I want to go to the uk just for a carvery. That looked fantastic! That aside, I find that when I’m trying to reduce, if I have a very small amount of a lean protein (two almonds, one hard boiled egg, a small piece of jerky) it will help me resist things like hotdogs or cakes. From someone who never used to snack.

I love how you can find a spot and sleep comfortably through the night. Because of my husband’s getup and equipment, I bought a shuttle bus for us to travel comfortably. I cannot sneak in and out of most places, except for a hospital parking lot. Maybe that’s not a bad idea EXCEPT for the sirens, the helicopters, the flashing lights and hysterical people. While I could pull in and fit right in, there would be little sleep. I would not hesitate to go inside of a busy place and tell security that I was in the Emergency Room to explain the bus for even a few days BUT I would really have to soundproof the thing and I NEED to hear sirens when I am driving down the road. I was thinking about comfort and taking him to see things before he was gone but put no thought into traveling alone. So now I am sitting on it, wondering if I should get a smaller van - wait, I have one and it is a back breaker when I am in the back. Though I was always back there adjusting something for him. No, I would get a smaller one without all of the ‘stuff’. The wheelchair lift takes up a foot up the side of the van. I just need to find a broker to sell both of them and find me something similar to yours. I would be happy to let him/her to take a cut and find what I want. Blah blah blah but I really like your ability to find spots and to fit right in and not look out of place as well as your confidence that you won’t be bothered and if you are you will just move on. RESPECT

Horses for courses we say and at that time that was the van you needed. A small van is nimble and cheap to run but you do sacrifice a lot of comfort and convenience. At the moment that sacrifice is worth the ease of travel and multitude of parking spots we can use. As for travelling alone I imagine that is rather daunting but it can be done. My editing setup I use a MacBook Air M1 laptop to produce the videos. I regret not buying a MacBook Pro though. I use Final Cut Pro as my editor. All clips are transferred onto an external SD drive to save clogging up my laptop drive. I only edit at home now as I have a dedicated editing keyboard and a large 4K monitor. Easier on my eyes. For the maps I use Google Earth Studio. I used to make a load of editing videos but have given that up as things change so fast these days. It won’t be long and people will be using Artificial Intelligence to edit their films. My only fear about that is that they might all begin to look the s

Not at all, our Highway Code has recently been altered to give primacy to people. The point I am trying to make is everyone needs to look to keep themselves safe. Many respondents take the line that they don’t have to look because it’s the drivers job to avoid them. If the driver is not paying attention they could be killed. If they looked and saw the driver has not spotted them they could stop and avoid the crash.
