This is an excellent method of installing an undermount sink. I just used it myself-thanks! Just one thing I thought I'd mention: You don't need such a long 2x4 below the sink. It just has to be a few inches wider than the drain, which is always the lowest part.

Thanks Dwight. Yea it was super tight underneath and I didn't feel I would be able to get a good image of it. They are fairly easy to install though. I attached them with 2 part epoxy roughly 2 inches away from the edge of the sink.

@@LifeofBliss Yeah, totally understandable. I've got an oddly shaped sink and silestone countertop and my sink cracked. Now, I'm having trouble finding a matching sink that contours to my countertop. Can safely under-mount a sink that doesn't exactly contour to the countertop without it leaking? Thanks again for the vid!

Yea I'm sure it would be fine as long as it was all flat where the sink was contacting the counter. The silicone would make a good seal. Sorry to hear that man... no way to find who manufactured the sink and get a replacement?

Good job. The silicone does most of the holding power. I am doing one but I am going to let the counter overhang the sink a bit. 1/4" probably. This way you won't see seam.

It was cured and tested with much more weight before the baby was used. Thankfully we have a backup baby now, so if something happens to the first one, we still have a working test baby. Thanks man!

That is a clever way to apply pressure to the glue. Smart! Also very useful was the clips you showed. I did not know what to use as clips and that you could glue them on. Seeing the items and having the name for them is half the battle won. Those threaded rods are so useful to have around. Oh that baby is adorable! I need to borrow him for my sink install too. So cute! Thank you for a great video, very clear and to the point. fyi Mineral Spirits also removes fresh silicone and wipes hands clean better than alcohol. Acetone probably does too, but dries out your hands. Please don't add music to any demo or DIY video. Hurts the ears.

Good idea on using the threaded rod. Better than the long clamp I think. I just read a comment below. The fellow was saying he didn't think the silicone would hold the sink. I guess he thinks that the silcone will fail and the mounting device will come loose. I don't know, but if those are the instructions, then they must have tested it.

I would second the idea of using solid support under the sink. Epoxies, glues and silicone rarely hold the constant downforce weight of a sink without eventually failing at the worst time. While it does take a little more time and effort, it's simple to do to make a job done right, and requires minimal basic carpentry skills. All sinks, even undermounts, have a flange (lip) around the top edge intended to support the sink from underneath. While a top mount sink's weight is supported by the flange sitting ON the countertop, an undermount sink's flange SHOULD have solid support under it also. In your situation I would suggest cutting two 2x4 cross members to the inside width of the cabinet for supports under the front and rear sink flanges. Then cut four 1x2 boards for vertical supports of those cross members - long enough to reach the cabinet bottom. Screw the vertical 1x2 boards to the cabinet from the inside. You may need to notch the rear support to clear the faucet plumbing. You are basically building a "self supporting table" for the sink flanges to sit on inside the cabinet BEFORE installing the countertop. Just cut the vertical supports ("table legs") to the correct length so the sink flange is flush with the top of the cabinet, which allows the countertop to sit tight against the sink flange. This is the method that was REQUIRED by my granite countertop company before they would install over an undermount sink. They WOULD NOT guarantee a sink holding with ANY epoxy to the bottom of a granite/quartz countertop.

To get the excess silicone off ..or the squeeze out... Spray soapy water then with one wipe take a piece of stiff cardboard and wipe off... the soapy water won't let the excess stick to the top or the sink..

I would still definitely recommend some kind of support underneath even just some 1x going long ways and screwed to the cabinet. Sili won't last forever. I like the 2x4 idea though, we usually just use some extra long clamps.

Your gonna need a whole hell of alot more than sillicon and those little piece of shit bolts to hold that sink up. Reinforce the hell out of that sink, dont do what this man did. Lol... my counters were made out of mdf and covered in epoxy. I have a video on the whole process, but essentially I made everything from scratch. As long as you have a flat surface to mount the sink on underneath, shouldn't be an issue. You can scuff up your existing laminate or formica counters and overlay epoxy. Leggari has a lot of videos on that process, but its very similar to the video I made as well

Any suggestions on doing this with an offset drain rather than Center drain? Intended sink is quite heavy. Is there some sort of "jack" which would work to raise it into place?

I think this would still work to get it in place. You might take a spare 2x4 and some shims for the side without the drain to push it up from underneath once it's where it needs to be. Or maybe a standard emergency car jack that comes with most vehicles?

Yes, mdf core and epoxy counters. It has been very sturdy, not issues at all. Clips were to help hold the sink along with the silicone

good idea. I am dealing with this for the first time. We have Quartz coming and new undermount sinks. I will be dealing with the sink install. I don't know if we can (or should) drill into the bottom of Quartz to put a mount thread, so I was thinking about building a stand for the farmer sink to sit on with a way to ratchet it up to the counter so it can cure to the silicone. Does this make sense?

Yea I thought about using a jack of some sort at first. This process should work for your situation too I would think. I'd do a dry run without silicone before doing the real deal. We did that also.

Is the epoxy on the hardware only strong enough to support? I’m about to start my fix tomorrow on my under mount sink and was planning on applying epoxy around the entire rim of the sink, but for additional support, the hardware addition seems to be a good idea. Overall good video

Personally I wouldn't trust just the hardware to support it. You'll be putting silicone around the whole sink rim right? That's going to be where most if the support is and waterproof the outer rim. I added the hardware for additional support just to he safe

This really looks sharp. I see you used epoxy to mount the clips to the bottom of the counter. You used epoxy to cover the top. It's waterproof. Since epoxy is such a strong adhesive, Why not just use the same epoxy that you used for that 2 inches under the counter lip to waterproof it? Why not just let expoxy be the adhesive to join the sink to the counter? Just coat the underside a bit thicker along with the sink lip with epoxy and then clamp it together. Have you tested that?

I haven't tested that and honestly I don't know that it would be a great idea... silicone is much easier to work with, I wouldn't want to try attaching a sink and worrying about epoxy runs for the next 2 hours while it set up. The epoxy is a lot more rigid vs the silicone too. Just don't know how well it would hold... my advice is use the silicone

Sorry kinda breezed over those. I probably didn't even need them, it was just for some added security. They were added after the silicone cured. You can attach the screw end to the bottom of the counter before or after securing the sink with silicone, then just add the wing nuts and arms that hold the sink whenever. Silicone does 95% of the work

The clips are from Amazon, theres a link in the description of the video for them. The majority of the hold is the silicon around the sink. The clips help to support it as well

I wasn't able to get a good shot of them once installed. It was very tight once the sink was in. But the threaded portion was put on the under side of the counter with epoxy and the bracket was put over the threads and held with the wing nut against the bottom of the sink. The silicon should do just fine, this was for added support

I did not... would have been a good idea to do so though! I put epoxy on the brackets and taped them in place while they cured after the counter was installed. I would definitely epoxy them on your granite while it's off. Much easier!

I used 2 heavy coats of kilz primer. Everything is like the day I finished it. Gotta be sure to coat the epoxy 1-2 inches under the sink cutout to completely waterproof it well. No swelling or anything in the mdf

Yes it is MDF with an epoxy coating. The underside is primed so no raw MDF is exposed to water. Along with the silicone I used the brackets there in the video and used an epoxy to secure them to the underside for some added support.

Silicone is great and all but if you really expect it to hold the sink when it's full of water or babies, you should make sure there is a support structure underneath. And instead of using silicone, consider something else, like 3M Marine sealant. That stuff is extremely permanent, it's strong as hell and of course completely water impervious. I could see something like that holding a sink full of water up on its own, but putting the baby in there with just silicone was kind of reckless. If the sink had come off, you could have killed the child if things went sufficiently sideways. So amusing ha ha, but not so much in retrospect. A sink needs a support structure.

There were 8 support clips added underneath as well. Kinda escalated that quickly to killing children guy... it was tested with several times his weight before letting him stand in it, I knew he would be fine.
