I just ran into your videos today. I'm 71 but my grandson has expressed an interest in ROTC, so I'm 'boning up' on it. I served as an enlisted man in the USN for 4 years, so this is somewhat new to me. I'm struck, staggered, and perplexed by all the acronyms. I've started a spreadsheet with each acronym that I encounter. If the exact meaning is not clear I try to find more by googling it. Anyway, keep up the good work. You seem like a sincere guy who really wants to help out others. I'm curious where you went to college/university.

Thanks for sharing, bro. Sorry to hear about you being judged by others for being sick and out of the game during freshman year. I mean, you'd figured that being understanding and helping your fellow cadet improve would give you better mileage than pointing at a problem and pushing it under covers. C'est la vie! P.S. Did you know of any folks in ROTC who entered junior year of college for the two-year scholarship or were transfer students? Are scholarships given prior to enrollment or after?
@brendan5352

One of my good friends was actually a transfer student. He transferred his sophomore year but I can't remember if he already had a scholarship or not, either way he ended up with one. We had some people who joined for two years but they were grad school students. Scholarships can be given prior to enrollment or after enrollment. You can apply for a national scholarship out of high school and if you don't get that you can compete for a scholarship while you're in the program

Life of Brendan Well Now that you mention it......lol I've gotta another question I will be going through ROTC with the SMP program. Do you know anything about cadets who have gone through SMP by chance? Helpful personall insight to the perks of SMP is what I'm looking for. I've flattened out all the knitty gritty technical details like weekend warrior, pay grade, etc.
@brendan5352
@brendan5352 7 жыл бұрын
We had several people from my ROTC battalion who did SMP. Some came in from the guard and some decided to do SMP after contracting with ROTC. I don't know if you have a GRFD contract (contract that says you can only go Guard) but I know a lot of people who did SMP did. If so, you'll have a big perk of being able to get your foot in the door/get to know your unit before you go there as an officer. You also get a OML point or two for being SMP so it should help you with accessions (but that doesn't matter if you are just going Guard anyway)
@daltonater1212
@daltonater1212 7 жыл бұрын
Life of Brendan I love the idea of SMP because you can get a foot in the door of your unit. I'm still weighing in between MI national guard and MI Army tho. May sway my choice of MOS considering that I'm not sure if Minnesota even has an Army MI unit. Not sure on the Minnesota national guard MI units either. Also, this may be happening. m.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/sep/7/donald-trump-wants-bigger-military-bigger-defense-/ So on the bright side the Army may be looking to recruit new Army MI officers in the future lol
@brendan5352
@brendan5352 7 жыл бұрын
If you go Guard you can pick your state (which I'm guessing will be Minnesota). If you go active duty however you won't be going to Minnesota because, as far as I know, we don't have any active duty Army posts in Minnesota. Also keep in mind it is significantly harder to get Active Duty MI than National Guard MI

I’m concerned that I won’t be able to get the education I want with ROTC. I’m considering a college primarily known for its excellent ROTC program, but I don’t want that intense training to get in the way of my 4.0. I need a lot of studying time to excel but I also want to be the best I can be in the army- can I maintain my grade and also be successful in ROTC? How possible is that? Does that mean I’ll have to eat/sleep/breath school and the army?

ROTC gives you a ton of time to do your school work because it plays a big part of your branch selection. Think of ROTC as a elective with PT and a few FTX's a semester.

Hey Brendan, just wondering about how you choose your MOS. Do they base it off of more of what they want or what you want? Like would they put you somewhere that you would not want to go? Like if you didn’t want to be in the infantry and wanted to be MI, (as long as you were up to standard with the OML,) would they put you in a random MOS or favor you to your likings? I plan on doing ROTC when I get into college next year and just was wondering about jobs inside of the military.
@brendan5352
@brendan5352 5 жыл бұрын
It depends if you're going national guard or active duty. For active duty, you put all the different branches in order of what you'd like most to what you'd like least and submit it. The higher you are on the OML the more likely you are to get what you want (usually). Even if you're not that high on the OML people generally get one of their first 5 choices but sometimes someone will get unlucky and end up with something that was low on their list. In the national guard you reach out to different units and whichever one accepts you that is the branch you get

What's your experience with people joining the ROTC program after the MS1 year? Say, second semester sophomore year? Did they have a hard time getting squared away? Also, does the OML only take into account stuff you did while in the program, or can you get points for stuff from before joining ROTC?
@brendan5352
@brendan5352 7 жыл бұрын
We had several people join their sophomore year. It's not that hard to catch up with people who were there freshman year but I do think you have to do an extra one month training in the summer. However people who joined their sophomore year were at a disadvantage on the OML for some reason. To answer your second question, I'm not exactly sure. I actually don't think you can get points for doing stuff while you weren't in ROTC, which probably explains why people who joined their sophomore year were at a disadvantage on the OML

I am struggling a lot as an MS3 getting ready to go to camp, because I was MP for 9 years before joining ROTC. No, after you do ROTC you're given a branch within the Army. If you do Army ROTC you're not going to be pushed into the Navy or Air Force or anything like that. To do Special Forces as an Officer you have to put in a packet to try and go to selection. If you pass selection you get picked up and go on to do a ton of training and go to a SF group. But you can't put in that packet until you're at least a 1LT promotable which is about 4 years

If you get a scholarship then yes. ROTC accepts any major, but in order for you to get college free then you have to earn a scholarship. You should get in touch with the person in charge of the ROTC units at the schools you’re looking at for more in depth answers to your questions. There is also the split option program through army reserves, where you enlist through reserves/ national guard while going to college, and they will pay for college. Being an officer is the better way to go in my personal opinion, but just sharing different options

I can't say I know anything about intelligence, military or otherwise, but I suppose being able to do analysis is important because most intelligence officers are going to be doing this or administrative work especially. When people think of intelligence they think spy work, but the field operatives are a different breed altogether and after reading about one former KGB officer who later came to the U.S. it would seem you would need great interpersonal skills and learn how make deals over cups of coffee rather than anything you'd see in a spy movie. It would seem language skills are what is in demand in intelligence as well as being a world traveler, but this is all complete speculation on my part.

Can you explain how going on to active duty works? I heard that its three years on 4 fields jobs like artillery, infantry, chem etc and then you go to the job of your choice which is only 4 options? I heard this and didn't know how true this was could you explain this to me? Also what test do you have to take to determine your jobs etc?
@brendan5352
@brendan5352 7 жыл бұрын
That is not at all how it works. What you're talking about is branch detailing, if you branch detail you're put in a branch (like infantry, field artillery, chem, armor) for 4 years and then you switch to your other branch (usually MI, AG, Finance, etc) when you hit Captain's Career Course. You don't have to branch detail, in fact most people don't. The OML is the main thing that ROTC uses to determine what job you get

@GTBANNA
@GTBANNA 4 жыл бұрын
Steven Hernandez hey im an ROTC cadet. Well it depends. If you want a scholarship you need to maintain a 3.0, but if you just want to commission as an active duty officer with no scholarship all you need is to maintain a 2.0. Going active duty is tricky, becuase they only have a set number of slots, just have a really good PT score, and do extremely well at advance camp (basically like a test for what you have learned). The most important thing, SHOW UP! Ive seen cadets not get contracts because they dont show up to class, lab, or PT.

If you're talking about fun learning about it yes that's true. But if you're trying to train very hard to get into an ROTC I suggest you live your life first. Stay a kid as long as possible. If you want to learn more about it ask your teachers or counselor. They will give you all the information possible. But like I said, there is no reason to be worrying about this too majorly right now. Just have fun for now. Be a kid. Then think about joining

Does OML grade activities, clubs, etc. that I did at an previous college? I'm transfering from a 2-year university, to a 4-year university to finish my B.A. I'm active in TONS of school activites and clubs at my 2-year college. Thanks for the reply. Also, is it possible to attend schools like Airborne or air assault while in ROTC or is that something I would have to try for afterward. If so how does the process for getting that kind of training work as an officer.
@brendan5352
@brendan5352 7 жыл бұрын
It is possible but it's really mostly about what school you go to. Some schools get a lot of slots and some schools get none. If you don't get a slot as a Cadet it's possible as an Officer. If you're in an Airborne or Air Assault unit you'll definitely go. Even if you're not it may still be possible if your unit gets a slot and decides to send you. From what I hear there are a good amount of opportunities to go to Air Assault school
