Life On The Hulls

Жыл бұрын

Transformational moments are few and far between in a massive boat build like this, but his week we spray the port side hull extensions that were once just hunks of foam and fibreglass to reveal our Catamaran's final look, and WE LOVE IT!
This KZbin build series is all about what it takes to build a Catamaran from Scratch. There is so much detail in a build of this size and so many different techniques involved in bringing her to fruition. I trust you will find something that may help with your current or future project, repair or dream boat build. If you feel there is value, please let us know and comment so we can continue to produce content worth your valuable time.

Watching this project inspires me to do better with my own endeavors even when I'm hot, tired and had enough. Thank you for sharing this with the world.

Wait! Before you future son-inlaw escapes, perhaps he could run some wiring for solar panels for the back spray-hood. I've noticed that solar cells don't like being blocked. Perhaps they could be wired in such a way that if one panel is blocked, the other would still charge. On top of the hood, the lines and booms might obscure solar cells enough to lower their output for the whole panel. It's looking good! All the years of Kayak-making really shows! This whole boat is physical manifestation of your skill. Perhaps some kind of speckle finish would be nice for under the spray-hood. I've seen it used on composite light aircraft. Just a note: LED lighting strips don't last forever. So, I would hope that any lighting solution would not be so integrated/custom that the LED strip cannot be replaced. Also, for such things as electronics that might be exposed to the sea, there is conformal coating, which might help protect circuits from the salt air. It's not removable, and electronic parts such as heat-sinks and warm running parts should be masked off. I would avoid the silicone kind, and go for the acrylic kind. Also, for connection which might be exposed that cannot be heat-shrinked, there is brush-on electrical tape. Also, heat-shrink comes in two kinds, one has no adhesive inside, the other does, which might seal out salt-water better. A cheap hot-air wand is really handy for heat-shrink tubing. If you have electrical covers which don't seal exceptionally well, there's also automotive RTV sealant, the kind that doesn't stick to surfaces well. Perhaps if the water collects on the hood pocket, a drain could be added, to dump the water over the side.

Great to hear from you .We will have 3 separate regions of solar to avoid shading issues from shrouds boom etc.Each around 700watts.Our engines will also have significant charging ability.All our connections are cold weld crimped and adhesuve hwat shrinked and top notch tinned copper wire,and well out of condensation and moisture to avoid problems with voltage drop etc.Thanks so much for your well constructed comment as well.Love it.Rossco.

Although I would love to, I could never build a boat of this size for myself. You are so thorough on everything you are doing to the boat and I think that after 5 years or so, I would probably cut corners to save time. How do you stay so true to the build? You have been so meticulous where I would say, “you’ll never see that in the dark or don’t worry, a cushion will cover that.” Haha. Great job buddy, God bless you and Janet. ❤

Well Ross , just to back up what Chris mention , i've been watching for a while now . I'm gonna be honest here , i'm not really interested in cat's , more of a monohull person myself , and further to that , i prefer smaller boat around the 30 -35 foot mark . But i just love the way this vessel is shaping up , you really do put yourself through the grinder , every week . It's interesting to see the problems you face and the way you get around them , and man have i been eager to see these hull extensions flow coated in . You did a short , maybe a week ago where i noticed in the back ground the hulls had been flow coated , so i knew it was coming , but this particular episode was really worth the wait . Stunning ! Chris mentioned you are known around the world ? , well i guess it's true , i'm in Great Britain .

A Chris, I absolutely agree with everything you said about Ross He is so generous with his time when he really has so much to do. I dropped in about a year ago with a 40 pounder of square bear to try and keep him in the straight and narrow. I don't think it worked because the next time he was in bear country he was on the Jack again. ( a slow learner...a) Just can't train some blokes with bad habits...can ya A Ross ole mate ....keep up the good work Hopefully I'll see you next mid June before you splash with another bottle of courage.in the form of another 40 pounder of the bear. You’ve come a long way in your knowledge/experience. I remember back in the early days you were very precise with every lamination scheme, now you just use a “shitload of fiberglass” and it will be “strong as hell”. 😉 One question on this weeks episode, won’t you end up with a puddle of water in the 90 degree corner close to the helm station? Maybe also on the inner corner in front of the winch?
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls Жыл бұрын
The 90 degree is on the downward forward side of the winch and is consuderably sloped forward, The new coaming at the stern end will divert each way. I am still careful using only bare minimum but substantially strong laminates where I can.Cheers mate.

@@LifeOnTheHulls I understand, it’s hard to see the sloping and its directions on the videos. Another thing that just crossed my mind, can’t you make a short portion of a video where you tell us about the financials of the project? What’s the total cost so far and how is it in proportions to the initial budget? How much more do you expect to spend and the final cost and budget figures? Cheers from Sweden! //Gunnar

Love following your progress. You may think I'm a f,#@kwit but I had a thought; wouldn't it have given your winch mount mods a cleaner finish if you had put the bevel behind the gutter. Then you could cut off the ugly bulge on the underside of your canopy. Probably stronger too. Cheers Ross, keep up the great work, Hugh

Are you going to have a life raft forward in case you're sinking from the stern?
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls Жыл бұрын
Probably won't have a life raft on the bow.Main concern with capsize is life raft would be inaccessible on the bow, buoyant and stuck under the foredeck.I would be surprised of this a cat would sink with so much foam but position where it is would be most accessible.In a fire I am not sure however. I am not sure if someone else asked, but was it going to be harder to run the lines somewhere more convenient (forward/aft) for that wench? Seems like when you add the soft top you will again have to deal with a strange shape around that wench. When you put the seat in, will it be difficult to get to that wench? I know you are tall, are going afraid of hitting your head on that cut out?
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls Жыл бұрын
The winch base is out of the passageway for hitting our heads as the staircase is forward of it.The lines will be clean from the traveller or gerrman sheeted blocks straight to the winch.I did consider them coming back to helm but I feel there is far too much going on there and once the seat is mounted it will provide good access to to the winch for all.Rossco
