Slightly unrelated, but this evoked a memory from school. I had a friend who had what he called “a homeless stash” in the corner of the park near his house hidden away filled with little useful tools and change to use incase he was ever made homeless. He had a plan for what he would’ve done if he was ever made homeless. He had that because he knew that being homeless can happen to anyone, potentially at the drop of a hat. And he was a scout. So he followed the motto, “be prepared”. He has that stash at 13. If a thirteen year old kid is contemplating the possibility of being homeless there is clearly something wrong with the country. And if his tent got taken away you are only making his life worse. Suella Braverman is a callous and cruel woman who seems to enjoy hurting people who have already been hurt and seems to relish the opportunity. I believe she would excel as a Guantanamo Bay torture specialist and very much enjoy that job. And no such person who relishes the pain of others should be allowed in government.

As a psychiatric nurse back in the 80's I remember the closure of the big psychiatric hospitals like Friern Barnet and Tooting on Thatcher's governments advice that the mentally ill would now benefit from the Care in the Community initiative. This is care in the community. I spent years as a community mental health nurse trying to find ex patients who ended up untreated in homeless hostels,on the streets or in the prison system.

In 1994 I turned 16. My parents found out I was Gay and threw me out of the house. (They were BNP supporters, dad was/is a Skinhead.) Even though Thatcher was out, Major was no better on Gay issues (as it was called at the time). I wasn't entitled to Unemployment Benefit or Income Support unless I could prove that my parents had thrown me out. They were still claiming Child Benefit for me so as far as the DSS was concerned, I was living at home. Being gay wasn't a risk category, except for if I chose to have sex. I'd have to wait another 5 years for that, unlike my straight friends who could be pregnant, married and settled before I was allowed to do the deed. So I wasn't entitled to any help finding a house, wasn't entitled to council housing until I was officially kicked out or 18. I found out about a charity that offered help to young Lesbians and Gay Men who were homeless. They had a flat where they were able to offer a room and support. They could accommodate 3 people. I joined the waitlist of 23 people but never reached the top of it (not the charity's fault, they were awesome and I supported them until they closed once I had my life on track). Just as that Tory government destroyed the social safety net, this one has done the same, but moreso. They're doing all they can to burn the remnants and salt the earth behind them. And it's the *most* vulnerable in society that suffer the worst. Every. Fucking. Time. Children, the disabled, LGBTQ, BAME folk, the Elderly, those fleeing domestic violence, asylum seekers. There aren't any gas chambers, concentration camps, or specifically targeted laws against a particular ethnicity. But it's not an unbelievable logical jump to see them creep in to Legionella Braverman's rhetoric. If you've read this far, thanks. If you're looking for the Tl;dr - TORIES ARE HEARTLESS BASTARDS, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES VOTE TORY UNLESS YOU *WANT* TO KILL THOUSANDS MORE OF THE MOST VULNERABLE.

@@TalesOfWar One thing people don't think about is that people on the dole (or "welfare" in North America, where I live) actually DO contribute to the economy, albeit in a roundabout way. When we dish out their meagre benefits, they don't just go and flush it down the toilet, or burn it. With the exception of some spending it on illegal drugs (and let's not get into that now), they also spend their very, very limited money on things like rent (if they can find anywhere to live - our systems subsidize a LOT of slum landlords), legal alcohol (supporting off-licenses, government liquor stores, etc.,), cigarettes, some food, some transportation, etc. They actually RETURN that money to the economy, to a great extent. Of course, ideally their income would come from working, but it's not as if they make no contribution to the economy. (Just sayin' - I don't think you are ragging on the poor. 🙂)

Well said, JP. I was homeless from 07 to 09... and it definitely wasn't a lifestyle choice. If I'd been told I wasn't allowed a tent, it would have finished me. Maybe that's what they want. If all the homeless die, then hey, they solved the homeless problem and they make themselves look great for solving the problem. Or, maybe they just arrest them for using tents, jail them, and hey presto, same thing, no more people on the streets, so they solved the problem and make themselves look great. From my own experience on the street, I would take a jail cell over the streets any day. At least in jail you get free food 3 times a day, free bed and board, free heating, free water, free clothing, free gym membership, free TV, free WiFi with laptops, phones and PS4s provided. The only problem with jail is you might get shanked.... bu tthen again, that's just as much a risk when you're homeless. As for grooming gangs. Look up Graham Bould, Telford And Wrekin. He was head of Social Services, and a convicted p**dophile at the time when Telford's grooming gang problems were at their highest.

Unfortunately, a lot of what he's saying is wrong or miscontextualised. Not defending Braverman or any of the Tories - they're all effing useless; the only thing they seem to know how to do is print more money, which means everyone, except those at the very top, get screwed over (equal criticism of Labour for this too; printing money is _never_ the _right_ answer for the poor). That said, if you have a "homelessness problem" it doesn't make sense to keep importing more "homeless" people, which this government seems intent on doing (and all governments going back to 1997...) I want to live in a Britain where we can take asylum seekers and refugees and offer them a genuinely better future, but I don't see how we're achieving that - most immigrants seem destined to do below-minimum-wage jobs (if they work at all), while putting pressure on infrastructure (roads, hospitals) that we don't have the money/land to expand - we spend more on debt interest than we do on education! And I don't think people would be happy with demolishing and completely rebuilding entire cities or concreting-over the countryside... We're driving a bus on flat tyres and still taking more passengers. It's just madness, whatever way you look at it.

I think it's absolutely absurd to refer to homeless people having a tent or being homeless as a "lifestyle choice". That said, I don't think we should allow homeless people to camp out or sleep on the street / sidewalks and there definitely needs to be a time limit on camping out on eg. benches at eg. bus stops or trains stations. It is not the intended use of those things. And it can carry risks of eg. blocking evacuation routes, EMS access, fire hazards (ie. drunk or high people smoking whatever and passing out, inside or outside) etc. ... On the other hand, there's not nearly enough being done to have available treatment places for eg. mental illness, getting clean from drug or alcohol abuse and shelter offers. In my country and specific city. We have 1 home with 50 spaces for homeless, but only 5 of those are available for 1 night (not multiple), if the person in question doesn't want to start getting clean. Granted, it's not the biggest city, but that seems an unrealistic goal. At least, we did have a somewhat forrested small area, where the homeless could kinda build their little shacks and tents in peace (conveniently hidden away), but that area was recently set aside for commercial and residential development (stupid since it's the lowest part of the town and somewhat at flooding risk with climate change).
