I got gel manicures almost every two weeks for three years with no problem. My nail tech heated velvet coated bags of rice and wrapped my acetone soaked in a cotton pad nails in foil before putting them in the heat bags. She left my nails soaking in the heated bags until the polish would come off without having to scrape. It's all in the technique.

Hmm, that is definitely not how they removed it at the salon I went to - soaked pads of cotton then secured them with foil to my finger tips for 15 minutes then scrape and buff off. Your tech's method sounds much gentler.

Pretty Neat Living, my nails have been completely stripped by the shellac/gel color polish the last time I had them done. They are so weak and brittle now. If you go to the right manicurist, they will know how to take the polish off, or you can take it off at home before you go to get them done. I know exactly what you are going through. I feel your pain. But don't rule it out, because if you go to the right place, it can be fine. I typically get mine done every 2-3 weeks at my usual place, because my nails are brittle, and this helps them last longer. Don't let one bad experience make up your mind for you.

I've been getting gel polish for years. I love it! I sometimes do it at home as I have a light and am licensed but typically go get it done just because it's easier. Every few months I might take a week break or so. Yes it does weaken your nails a bit however it shouldn't do it THAT much. I am someone who always keeps their nails painted and the good outweighs the bad IMO

I need to check out Stitch Fix, that sounds like so much fun! The "no chip" manicure sounds like gel nails to me. What I did is, I bought my own supplies and do it at home! Sure it doesn't last as long as the nail salon but I don't buff it down as much as they do. I've noticed a huge improvement by doing it on my own!

You could feel the breeze through your nails lol. That made me laugh omg haha. I know what you're saying though. If you ever do that treatment again make sure they don't buff or scrap your nails in any way. Some techs do that so the polish adheres better to the roughed up nail as opposed to the smooth surface nail bed...but don't let them!! xo

Thanks for the tip on "no chip" manicures. Nail polish never lasts for me more than a couple days max, so I was considering having them done. Now I'll just continue with my own imperfect manicures and just paint them very pale colors that don't show the chips as much. Hope your nails get back to their healthy state soon.

Hey Jen, I've been doing the "no chip" AKA gel manicure myself at home for years now and if you remove the polish properly it doesn't damage your nails! And I've got very weak and prone to peel nails. You just need to file the top layer of the polish with a rough file (just file it a tiny bit so the nail polish remover can get through the polish faster, do NOT file down all the way to your nails) and then place a nail polish remover soaked cotton ball on top of the nail (the remover should contain acetone to be the most effective). Then wrap the tip of your finger with aluminum foil to hold the cotton ball in place. Let your nails soak for ~10 minutes and then pull the foil off the first nail you wrapped to check if the polish has become dislodged yet. You should be able to see the polish pulling away from your nails. You can gently push the polish off your finger with a cuticle pusher/orange stick (since your other fingers are covered in tin foil). If some of the polish is still on your nail just put the aluminum foil and cotton ball back on. It sounds like a bit of a faff to remove, but I think its worth it because the polish is instantly dry and completely hard as soon as you finish so I feel like the time you loose taking off the polish is gained back when you don't have to wait for the polish to dry. Perhaps after your nails have recovered from this you might want to look into at-home gel systems since you liked the polish experience so much. I personally have the Sensationail lamp and most of my polishes are their brand, but you can use any UV/LED lamp from amazon and you can usually find UV/gel polishes at target & the drugstore.

It's actually the acetone, scraping and buffing they do to remove the gel polish that ruins your nails, not the polish itself. Oh and just FYI, Post-Partum is only the 6 weeks following the birth of a child

I've had gel done a few different times and a few times had my nails wrecked like yours and other times it's been great. I find it's really when they take it off that the damage is done. I've started buying gel polish remover pads from Target and taking it off myself. I also only go to places that are gentle. When they file my natural nails down a lot for it to "stick" they get so damaged! I find that it doesn't last longer when they do that either.

I agree about the nails, Jen! Like you, I thought the no chip gels looked and lasted wonderfully. But they were very harsh on my nails when they were removed. I thought it was just me, as my nails tend to die back if I leave any polish on them too long, but I guess the gels are even harsher. I do think it should be just a "special occasion" thing. I had them done for my daughter's wedding, and that was almost 5 years ago! Thanks for sharing! :)

I'm guessing that between your beautiful new bedding and the laundry addition that you're feeling pretty excited about your room these days! Your nails were beautiful in your Go Wild vlog; I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the no-chip, but I'm sure your experience is helpful info for others considering the application. I frequently do my own gel manicures at home with the SensatioNail kit and they wear beautifully though I am careful about removing the polish and give my nails 'breathing' time between applications. I also notice that my nails seem a little weaker/rough just after removal but my nails recover quickly and don't suffer the damage yours did..I too wonder if the excessive buffing and back-to-back applications caused your nail sensitivity and chipping. Hopefully your nails will recover quickly with some TLC!! As always, thanks for sharing! Be well, friend!

I would be interested to see a video update of your nails as they recover. I have this same problem with overfiling when I get my nails done. And then I swear off nail enhancements all together. Then after month of rehab, I want to treat myself, and they get ruined again. I got my nails done the last time ever for my baby shower, it's just not worth it, it's like once you start you have to keep up with it and once they come off my nails always had to have a period of recovery. After the last time I took off my acrylic nails myself and used piles of vaseline lol. They still needed recovering but I think it helped a bit. Use your Burt's Bees cuticle butter if you still have it! I always get compliments on my natural nails when I use it consistently.

I've had that happen with my nails too. I have very very thin nails naturally. I bought a light and the supplies online and did my own shellac for a couple years. I noticed my nails got a little drier, but overall no issues. I had them done in salons several times. A few of those were great, but a few of those were too rough removing it. I now never let them use the "buffer". I think it's quicker for them, but leaves me with tissue paper thin nails. If I soak them myself (I usually use cotton/foil) I don't have too much damage. It takes so long to grow them out, I don't blame you for wanting to avoid them! :(

Love that jacket. I have done gel nails, powder gel nails, no chip, everything... Anytime they take out a buffer to buff the nail down to make the product attach to your nail, it will ruin your nails. My nails looked just like yours did. I get gel nails only for very important occasions. Last time I got gel nails was for my wedding. Never again... hah.

My nails get wrecked from even one round of gel manicure. I'm with you, it looks awesome, especially the french manicure, so classic and worth the money since it lasts so long, but no way. I won't do it anymore. If you do want to try the Sally Hansen or Essie gel nail polish (doesn't involve a light) don't be afraid of that! It's just long wearing regular nail polish, comes right off with normal nail polish remover.

Hi Jen, ❤️ all your videos, and those Oreo Cookies look amazing! I too, many years ago tried gel nails, no chip, what ever you want to call them and had the same issues you are. It was excruciatingly painful. Try a product called "Hard as Hoof" I found it at my local Walmart, not very expensive, maybe 5.00. It's a cream, mine was cherry scented, and you can rub it into your nails and nail beds numerous times a day. Now my nails are very strong, and I still to this day use that product. Good luck with getting them healthy again and have a wonderful summer with your beautiful family.

The first thing I noticed is the bedding. I am uninformed about duvet covers. In my area it is too hot to ever use any kind of heavy bedding even in the winter. I am wondering if duvet covers are removed nightly and "just for show". We never had them growing up. Perhaps I should search on KZbin for more information but would appreciate any input anyone can offer. The bedding is just beautiful. I remember the blue walls and just loved the color. I don't know anything about manicures at this time. My nails have chipped recently and my doctor said I was low on iron which I have read can make that happen. Probably not the cause in your case though. Happy summer!

Would eating Jello make your nails stronger? I heard that somewhere, but I'm not a beauty guru. I've had my nails done maybe once in my life.

I watch Heather as well and really enjoy it. It's kind of fun for me because she lives in Colorado as I do and she gets the high altitude thing. I like the way she is a "real" person running and doing the best she can. Maybe start back with Run Disney with shorter runs as a 10k. It will happen for you I know it will.

Opi nail envy is my nail savior! My nails have taken a brunt of some health issues and they've been just like what the gel left you with with the deep deep nail bed tears and even just making my fingers feel sensitive and the nail envy saves them! I know you don't want to put something on them but just like dry hair that's breaking you'd apply treatment do that for your nails and do warm olive oil soaks every other day to keep cuticles hydrated which will also help your nails recover faster. Microwave a small bowl of olive oil and soak for 15 mins take time to read or watch videos and just enjoy the soak before bed. I also love putting a thick vitamin e oil on them at night. I find it at cvs in the skin care isle. It's the thicker oil and it's wonderful for cuticles (and under the eyes) but use a little or you'll be an oil slick because it takes time to soak in.

Thats a gel manicure and i stopped getting them for that exact reason. My nails were buffed down so thin it was painful.

when my nails were recovering from the worst acrylics of my life a few years ago it was way more worth it to me to just maintain a really hefty manicure (with normal nail polish) until the entire buffed-down part of my nail grew out. it stopped them from breaking and peeling as easily and there's no point trying to keep that part of your nails healthy because they're already messed up permanently, the layers aren't going to grow back.

I had to take a break after doing gel manicure for awhile, the problem is they file the nail beds way too much during the process. I think if you buy your own gel kit and do it yourself, you wont have that problem.

Oh my gosh! I almost got gel nails before Go Wild....I'm so glad that I didn't. I've been doing my own nails for years now, and they've also been the healthiest I've seen them. I would've been so bummed to see them cracking like yours. Hopefully they recover soon! Also, did you know Reese was at our hotel at the same time we were there? Wouldn't it have been cool if she just showed up to Go Wild as one of us planner girls? :) xoxo Bonnie

I have no problems with my no chips and I have weak nails to start with. It sounds like they took them off wrong. Never ever let them soak the whole tip of your nails in the acetone. Then sometimes they file too much. It should be the cotton ball wrapped in foil. When I had my nails soaked in acetone instead of the foil method they were ruined also. Find a place that removes them in the correct way. Otherwise the whole top of your fingers are ruined and peeled. But I love my no chips/gel nails.

You should try the chuau brand chocolate in the firecracker flavor--pretty sure Oreo got their "popping candy" idea from them, but that chocolate is 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Wow! Hope your nails heal soon. In the past, your nails were beautiful when you did them yourself. And love the new bedding! Very, very pretty. Didn't know you were still getting Stitch Fix? I love watching people unbox their Stitch Fix...just saying, Jen! :)

I have been getting gel polish every 2 weeks or so for about 3 years. I think I have success with it not overally damaging my nails by the way the technician removes it. To be fair it may totally be damaging my nails but I don't realize it because I always keep it on. I work in Jewerly sales and I feel like it is important to have clean and manicured nails at all times because so many people look at my hands. I often need to try on expensive rings for customers. And a little damage to my nails doesn't irritate me.. For me it's the same as dying or heat styling my hair, which I also do.
