Mixing is my forever-nemesis but I love the process, whenever I reach a new milestone I get reminded I know nothing and it's so refreshing to keep having more to learn and more to strive towards. I Love some of my mixes, and others I feel like I failed miserably, but I got into a consistent workflow where now I feel confident enough to push more and more into advanced territory. It's frightening and it gives you motivation at the same time. Thats why I love making music, it's such a wide range of subjects to learn and to try and master, that you always feel like the student and never the teacher, even if you're also teaching others. Great video, this was very insightful and with a ton of gems! 😁

Nice!!!! I run my drums through a drum bus first and get em all crispy and nice before they hit the master. But I didnt know you could use that limiter to sidechain the kick and 808, definitely gonna have to incorporate that technique!

i like to have 2 busses. one for the instruments and one for the drums so i can bring all of them down at the same time. same effect, different method i guess. and i also i can throw a eq on each bus to adjust and eq to see where my levels for either one is at.

If you’re professionally mixing yes. If just selling beats it “could” be overkill, especially if the customer is buying stems to have a different engineer mix/master it.

What gain staging volume do you recommend all your sounds individually be at before your start leveling?
@LifeStyleDidIt3 ай бұрын
This question has many answers tbh haha. A decent start is -6db, but I don’t really aim for a specific number anymore, I just make sure I got it. But if you read some plugin manuals, the plugins are modeled after analog gear so they will have a “recommended” number to feed gain into the plugin for desired results

what are your thoughts in just leveling in the channel rack and leaving the levels all the same in the mixer channel?
@LifeStyleDidIt2 ай бұрын
You can do that but the channel rack is prefader, meaning that is the gain that feeds into the plugins. If you click plugins, it usually doesn't sound good (with the exception of some that are designed for hot signal to emulate gear, ect). Depending on how much you implement gain staging, I would say it can cause some issues!

is it okay to put Maximus on the master and select clear master preset after i mix all the instruments?
@LifeStyleDidIt3 ай бұрын
Tbh I never used Maximus before and I don’t know what the preset is doing! But if you like how it sounds and it works, use it! One thing I would recommend is to study and understand what every thing does in the plugin and preset so you know what to adjust ect!
