Great vid. But disappointed to not hear a little kudos to John Gaston finishing on the podium. They only mention him in passing. He's a great story. This is not his primary sport. This amounts to off-season cross training for his World Cup skimo racing, and he's got a full-time job running Strafe Outerwear. And he's sprinting for 2nd and beating former World Tour riders...? That's impressive.

At age 27 (in 2024) he's the guy that has the best chance of consistently beating Keegan (age 30). Almost all the other names are in their 30's, they're not going to beat Keegan. Though my KZbin watching self has to hope for one Dylan Johnson miracle win just for the backward hat entertainment.

I love this series. I really do. And I love the athletes, the races and all the beautiful people who created this. And that's why this makes me a bit sad: To me, the sound and music of the production is just so over the top with its non-stop intensity. It's exhausting to watch. I mean it's just incessantly epic and hardcore, even when athletes are giving interviews about their difficult situations or when we're just trying to follow the pack on the initial parts of the course. Am I the only one who feels this way? Does everything have to be either utterly dramatic drums and strings or crescendoing inspirational piano pieces? It's like the audio actually ends up being distracting and takes away from how dramatic and inspirational what we are witnessing actually is. It creates sort of an empty sense of constant pump and hype that's just impossible to keep up over the course of the episodes. Instead, I end up a bit apathetic.

I never heard of Keegan Swanson before the Gravel Worlds. I was impressed that an american came in 4th. If he is so great, why isn't he racing in the pro peleton? I guess maybe he is making more money racing gravel in the states then racing in Europe?? Better to be a big fish in a small pond maybe? I guess I just don't see the big deal?

The documentary is not gritty or real enough. It feels too fabricated. Drop the dramatic music and focus more on the people riding. Also, the Cape Epic is streamed live on KZbin. It is a challenge to do live coverage of Ultra Events but maybe have a look at what the South African media teams are doing to make it happen.
