Merry Christmas 🎄 🎄 Ilana and family! All the best for 2025. Thank you for all your great travel info and updates. As a Canadian that flies AC, the amount of carry on luggage is mind boggling! Every flight we've been on for awhile now, they make an announcement, that there is too much carry on and would anyone like to check their carry on for free.I get some people are maybe doing carry on only to save the cost of checking luggage, but it's getting ridiculous. Even kids seem to have to have their own carry on. Oh well first world problems. Cheers from London, Ontario.

My carry on is always within allowed size. You never know when they'll enforce their size requirements. On 99% of flights, they ask for volunteers to check bags. I often do it on purpose when I already have a bag checked. A second bag is even more expensive to check. As a vertically challenged person, it's hard to reach the overhead. It's a drag on the rare occasion there's enough room in the overhead and my scheme is foiled.

As a Canadian who uses Air Canada almost exclusively to get to/from the cruise ports, this new information may change how we book our flights. We are avid cruisers and have taken pride in the fact that we can pack everything in one carry-on per person because we know they fit under the seat in front of us. We have had issues with our single (shared) suitcase getting rerouted and never reaching our destination. Luckily we booked our flight from Ottawa to Seattle the day before the cruise was set to leave. We had time to buy one small carry-on and some clothes to get us through our 10-day cruise through Alaska. Since that incident, we have been taking one small carry-on each and I take a personal bag. The airlines will extract as much $$ as they can. Charging extra for your checked luggage, now charging you for your carry-on. It's already more expensive for us Canadians to travel to the USA, just the CAD to USD is outrageous. Most cruise lines have a laundry service available, there is usually a small fee, but it's worth taking advantage of to avoid over packing, which many first-time cruisers do. You don't need a carry-on full of your jewelry and trinkets. You don't need a change of shoes/sneakers for every outfit. I have seen a passenger try to repack their multiple bags and they had one medium hard case just for their multiple pairs of Nike sneakers of different colors.

In addition to trying to determine the ETA/ETIAS issues, we also discovered the passport requirements for the UK (passport must be valid for "duration of your stay") and the Schengen area (valid 3 months after your departure date from the Schengen Area) - something to watch as other countries require at least 6 months validity after your intended tavel dates.

And hopefully I won’t get another stamp for entering and exiting St Maartin, as that was a family emergency. But this passport will have one for Barbados. Not all applications will be processed that quickly, but they do seem to be well organized.
@anneo3754Ай бұрын
I'm not understanding the carry-on. You get with your ticket one carry-on and one personal bag. People that have more than that should be the ones paying extra regardless of how much their economy ticket costs. I've had to check my carry-on at the gate a couple times because the bins were full of people's stuff that was way more than the 2 smaller bags they were "allowed" to bring on board. Penalize the people creating the problem, not some poor person that is just trying to go visit Grandma for the last time.

The new Air Canada “no carry-on” rule follows Westjet’s own. It stems from the fact that a lot of us want to do carry on only and there not being enough space on board. Unfortunately, I still see many people putting more than one item and taking up more than one carry on space and this doesn’t seem to be policed by the flight attendants. It’s created a stressful situation for those of us who prefer a carry on only way to travel so I’m hoping that enough people will take these basic fares to alleviate some of the pressure on the overhead space.

Re E|TIAS. It is only the same as the ESTA that we have had to apply for when visiting the USA. From experience the response has been pretty quick - usually in around 24 hours. The important thing will all of these changes is not to book anything until you have your approval to travel.
@carolinelane9599Ай бұрын
Problem with that is some countries like say Singapore you cant do the paperwork until i think its 5 days out at the eatliest. Its sort of like your arrival card but you can still be knocked back. So you cant wait for approval before booking.

@@carolinelane9599 My comment was based on the experiences of people visiting the USA. Because this country can be a challenge for some to get approval it is generally advised to get clearance first before buying your ticket. I know that the AC carry-on charge is infuriating, but necessary, as some people exaggerate with bringing multiple bags on board. I recently travelled to Europe with AC and I sat watching people coming on board with multiple bags and they get upset that they have no room in the bins above their seats! I’ve been travelling for 60 years and the level of stupidity & selfishness nowadays never ceases to amaze me! It was a matter of time that Air Canada would introduce a new policy on paying for carry-on luggage it’s getting ridiculous and the flight attendants are the ones that have to deal with this problem, it’s very stressful for them!
@reillydog11Ай бұрын
I don’t understand why the ground crew who is checking people in don’t do something about this…why do they let them thru?
@HandmadeJournalsbyFran2022Ай бұрын
@ Because most people register online, so no need to check in for a boarding pass. Then at the gate, the agent will only check boarding passes. They will announce that the plane is full and will take carry-ons for free, nobody moves! So the flight attendants are stuck with this inconvenience, it makes the flight late, and then they have to deal with unruly passengers. That’s exactly what happened on my flight.

Thank you Llana for the great info. I am so excited for my next cruise in fall 2025 on the Carnival Celebration. My sister and I would cruise together, but I haven’t been in many years since she passed away in 2017. I will be a solo cruiser which I have never done before.

Visa exempt except you have to do the paperwork and pay for something that isn't a visa but looks a lot like a visa...

I think we pay enough for flights to not be charged for a carry on. However... I would love it if more people didn't bring all their carry on bags because it takes people so long to get off the plane. I usually upgrade my seats anyway so it really doesn't effect me a lot.

The UK ETA will effect us when we head off in June 25 for our Regal Princess British Isles Cruise but $20 isn’t too bad considering If was dearer for our Canada & American ETAs back in 2015

I have heard that you need the UK ETA even if you are just transiting thru an airport there

Flying Delta from ATL to FLL for Sky Princess cruise to western Caribbean. I ❤love your cruise planner. It’s keeping me much better organized with clothes & other things you suggest to take. Our Tulum Ruins excursion in Mexico was canceled due to cartel & criminal activity…. Bummer. Thank you for your advice on how to cruise like a pro, because we are first timers! We need advice on an Alaska cruise…. MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁 ❤

Simple solution to the carry-on madness. Stop charging for bags. It all started when they started charging for bags.

But the income, think of the lost income!

They should charge for the carry on, free for checked bags

This is one of the many reasons we fly Southwest. Two bags for free every time.
