One thing that surprised me on our first cruise was that you could move around with food and drinks … eg grab a dessert from the buffet and take it back to the cabin, or if I hadn’t finished a drink in a bar I could just take it to another bar or a restaurant or pool deck or pretty much anywhere on board.

Even though I've been on a few cruises, I still really like watching your videos because I can always learn something! The only tip I have for newbie cruisers is to expect to have sea legs when you get back on land after your cruise - even though there are stabilizers, I still always find myself swaying a bit as I walk through the airport to come back home. I'm pretty sure that's what it is, and not after effects from the drink package...hehe.

Two things: On embarkation day have all travel documents available in print form - including your ESTA receipt if you are from outside the Usa and boarding from a us port. Elevators: It is much easier to catch and elevator from the end stations than in the middle. Go up or down a stair

Sea Bsnds are a game changer. i’m also one of those crazy people that tips my room steward when I get there. Even a 20. I know gratuities are included, but I still like to give my room steward a little something extra. It pays off in the end. I also like eating in the dining room. After a while if you sit in the same place, the wait staff really gets to know you.

While flying in to the port of embarkation a day early helps ensure you don't miss the boat, it also gives you a chance to do some touristy stuff in the port of embarkation as well. In fact, fly in two or three days early for the touristy stuff. If you fly in day-of-sailing, you'll go straight from the airport to the ship and not see much at all.

All your tips made our first cruise last year absolutely perfect. We followed your instructions and tips to the letter and things flowed so smoothly. We even purchased a lot of your suggested items for packing and items for making your room more functional (we would have been LOST without those hooks and packing squares). My only tips are: If someone secretly puts an upside pineapple on your cabin door, you might want to take it down or you're in for a big surprise. 2. There were quite a few elderly people on our cruise on mobility scooters so if you're able bodied and can do so, please take the stairs and leave the elevators to those who really require them. We did this and with all the deliciously rich food, we still didn't gain a pound on our trip. Thank you stairs and thank you Ilana.

I’m not a first timer. But I liked the idea of a plastic sleeve for the luggage. But I don’t think it’s a good idea to wear your cruise card so it’s visible. If you’re just walking around in town and not on a tour, it marks you as a tourist and may make it easier for thieves and pickpockets.

We typically bring $150 in singles, $100 in fives, and $50 in tens. Sometimes less...Yes, we plan on taking care of special staff. People that complain about slow/bad service ... hmm, I wonder why? And shopping for little knick knacky stuff on shore excursions. This is for a 9-11 day cruise. Also, do not put all your cash in the same compartments. Flying? Put some in over head carry on luggage, and the majority in personal luggage that never leaves you. NEVER in checked bags. You can even make a note (non descript if found) to remind you where you put/hid it. :) And since we always fly in the day or two before the cruise, all cash stays with us in personsal bags only on embarkation day. When you get to your cabin - of course always transfer it to the safe. Hope this helps.

This is a great list of things first-timers need to know. Additionally, research and get cruise insurance (which isn't covered under homeowners, medical, or auto insurance, as some first-timers would think). If you get sick and have to go to medical (sick bay), you will be charged and have to pay before disembarkation. They don't take insurance, so bring your own simple medicine cabinet with you.

On your first one, yes, cruise ships are pretty stable. And most of the time you won't notice any motion. But that doesn't mean you well never experience rough waters. One cruise I went on, we were sailing out of Astoria, OR, which is near the mouth of the Columbia River. These are some of the roughest waters in the world, and there is a reason why the US Motor Lifeboat Rescue School is located there. To add to the experience, about that time a Pacific hurricane had come ashore on the coast of Mexico, and we also got a bit of the fringes of that storm too. Things got so rough crossing the Columbia bar that they told us, if we didn't have to be on our feet, to sit down. Fortunately. something like this is pretty rare. On all my cruises, I have only known it to be this rough once. And 98% of the time, it will be pretty smooth sailing. As a side note, one thing I tell people who have never cruised before, and who are worried about rough waters, is to do an Alaska Inside Passage itinerary. Most of the time, the ship is sailing through some pretty sheltered waters. And the risk of encountering rough seas is correspondingly low.

Great tips as usual. We store our luggage under the bed and use it for our dirty clothes hamper. I put a dryer sheet inside and when it's time to go home, all dirty clothes get packed in a packing cube. When I get home, the packing cube goes right to the laundry room. We also bring zip lock bags. I use them for the snacks I bring to the room or even to wash out a few clothes as needed.😊

What I found super useful is to pack some string. While there is a line to hang wet bathing suits and towels, it is very short and stops you using the shower. I used 4 magnetic hooks, 2 on opposite walls and 2 on the ceiling. I then secured the string between the walls and over the ceiling hooks near the end of the cabin.

If your cruise is going to Bimini, it was a waste of time. I must say that my state room was very roomy. I didnt use any of the drawer space. I took soap I didn't use. Take a large cup to contain your water or free beverage. I had a bubbles packge where I drunk all the juice and sodas I wanted. The Carnival Elation had the best pillows and blankets. I did not use the surge cubes because there were enough plugs for my phone, watch, my fan and whatever else needed

Passport: If you can afford a cruise, you can afford a passport. While there are closed loop cruises that you can do with a certified birth certificate and photo ID, should something happen to you in a foreign port, (sickness, missing the ship etc.) getting home without a passport is going to be a royal pain and may take days to sort out the paperwork. - And make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months past your return date. Some countries will not honor a passport that expires sooner.

First-timers, as well as everyone else, should be aware that most cruise ship casinos allow smoking and they tend to reek of burning tobacco. There may be a non-smoking section, but it is often adjacent and the smell permeates the area. Often, the cigarette smoke wafts out of the casino and affects part of adjacent areas, i.e., the Piazza on some Princess ships. Sometimes, the Casino is the best/only practical route from the dining rooms to the theater and the smoke and smell can knock you for a loop. Folks who find this distasteful, have an aversion to this, are concerned about second-hand smoke or even an allergy, should be aware of this. In my many cruises, mostly on Princess, I've found no good way to avoid this.

I'm terrible about dropping things, and was so scared of dropping my new iphone overboard - I purchased a phone clip/lanyard. No worries! I paid maybe $6 for each on amazon. Also, I developed what's called "Disembarkment Syndrome" - the feeling you're still on the ship weeks or months after returning home. It's a legitimate movement disorder. I've wondered if it may be more common in people with Parkinson's (like me). Hmmm... maybe I can have my neurologist do a case study, and that will require sending me on lots of cruises! Haha, wishful thinking...

Is it okay to use debit at ports or do you have to use cash or credit cards? I don’t have a credit card.

Could you elaborate on why you don't like Princess ships. We have an Alaska cruise booked this spring on Princess. You said they were different but did not say why. Thanks for your videos.

I love Princess and have sailed with them often! I’m not sure where I said that. That said, I think it’s important to pick the right ship for you. They have great Alaska cruises

With all the available food on the ship, there are no chips, nuts, or candy bar type snacks. We bring those type snacks with us.

First time Australian (and/or non-North American) Cruisers are often surprised by the "Lemonade" that is free on cruises... We hear "Lemonade" and assume it is a sweet carbonised fizzy drink like a "soda" -- it's NOT!!! -- It's what we'd call a "Traditional Lemonade" or a "Lemon Cordial" -- still quite nice, but NOT what we'd expect ;)
