I am convinced that the Johnson Bros. prayed & fasted ahead of composing this hymn. Its weight is immeasurable. Stands the test of time. I am moved by tears each and every single time I hear, sing, and read it

In February of 1997, I taught this wonderful hymn to all the third graders at El Verano School in Sonoma, California, in honor of Black History Month. We were Caucasian and Hispanic, but we sang with vigor! I played the arrangement in the 1980 Episcopal Hymnal.

Just as a novel with a protagonist identified as being from an ethnicity other than the reader, it is possible to find empathy with the main characters. So it it is with this hymn. I believe any thinking and humane person can find the hymn speakes to something in their history.

The ORGANIST and the great Shantz ORGAN is excellent. The mighty Organ speaks in the sanctuary loudly and beautifully EXCELLENT. That great Organ makes the music of this church stand out.

THE LYRICS Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring Ring with the harmonies of Liberty Let our rejoicing rise High as the list’ning skies Let it resound loud as the rolling sea Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won Stony the road we trod Bitter the chast’ning rod Felt in the days when hope unborn had died Yet with a steady beat Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed We have come over a way that with tears has been watered We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered Out from the gloomy past Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years God of our silent tears Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might Led us into the light Keep us forever in the path we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places our God where we met Thee Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world we forget Thee Shadowed beneath Thy hand May we forever stand True to our God True to our native land.

Choir music, from the heart, from a community---will NEVER surpass the shine of popular culture. It doesn't matter how "perfect" anything is, because nothing, and NO one, is prefect.

Nice; but I think the tempo could have had a little more "gusto" given the Pastor's "charge" to sing to the glory of God. Coming to the end it sounded as though both choir and congregation were getting "tired."

Maybe it should replace "The Star Spangled Banner" as our national anthem. The ACLU, though, would probably sue. Too much God talk in it.
