My Grandpa used pipes that were large enough to fit around the body of the strut. Instead of removing the pipe to close the hood, just slide it up onto the body of the strut, and it stores there.

New struts are less than $15. Just changed them out on my Ram pickup, old ones lasted 13 yrs. This is a good idea if your going to be under the hood for a long time, same thing as using jack stands if you plan to be under the car for any length of time. I use a cordless DeWalt saw to cut PVC, less chance of nipping a finger.

Mine cost $30 each (2 needed) shipped and lasted 5 years. I would use the disc grinder over a toothed sawblade for this. Less dangerous.

Old Motocrossers used to somehow recharge their shocks by brazing some type of fitting and refilling them. Would be great if you found out more and did a vid showing how to repair the strut like that.

You can try AliExpress they do have reasonable prices of Gas Support Struts & I got a pair of liftgate Gas Support Struts for the PT Cruiser for $27.43 New Zealand including freight for a pair which I had received last week from AliExpress they are brand new & the boot lid on these PT Cruisers are a Very Heavy & they work fine I installed them myself & I'm really pleased with them here in New Zealand they are very expensive it would cost me $160.00 for the pair I wasn't paying that price for them & these rear gas struts can handle 700 newton meters which is 516 pounds & now I only lift the boot lid up about a 1 foot & the boot lid goes all the way up to the top & it does it Automatically Thanks To AliExpress Kind Regards Peter

How is this a cheap fix when you need to buy a grinder? I could understand if someone was using regular tools like a hammer, but a grinder is not a regular household tool.. it's a tool for builders and people who modify things.

I can't argue with the price, and I love creative ideas like this. But before selling the car it might be wise to spring for struts so you don't have to offer a complicated explanation to a buyer looking for weakness. When I fix something before selling it I often wonder why I didn't fix it before.
@timewa851

hopefully buy the time he sells it the blower will be disconnected, tailgate will be missing/lost, and body will have plenty of dents-PVC hood holders will blend right in:)

Yeah, but it's a truck. If a used truck buyer knit picks over this, then he's not worthy of buying your truck (yes, u like for my vehicles to go to good homes).

I used to drill a hole in the inner strut shaft toward the end of its travel and put a pin through it, You tie the pin to a string and tie it around the strut and you're good to go. Looking back it probably weakens them but I only ever did it on my own vehicles.
