Chevrolet lifter noise, engine knock sound from Collapsed AFM DOD lifter. This release trick will save you Lots of money. Fix that pesky lifter tick with this technique I have done it on many vehicles for the last 2+years. This might appear to be a temporary fix but I assure you it is typically a long term solution.
Share this with all your GM V8 friends and if you don't have this Issue yet or still have warranty get yourself the Range device amzn.to/2REouzc Note: (This is NOT a Tuner!) just prevents vehicle from entering 4cyl mode and a much cheaper more permanent option is to use www.lt1swap.com and I highly recommend the permanent option.

This was a email sent to me by a customer and I agree with his technique and tactics he took in his approach. I think this will be a helpful read for many watching this video. Email from Mark: Charles, I wanted to offer a follow up on my AFM delete. Please feel free to share this any way you wish. I did the delete on my 2007 Yukon XL 5.3L 0 Vin Engine, so Iron block, aluminum head 5.3L with 141,000 miles. I removed the Intake manifold and the AFM manifold, removed the AFM system from the AFM manifold and did the Oil Feed block off. Thank you for the quick shipment and great advice. This engine had the zero compression in Cyl #6 at tear down. With the lifter no longer locked and the AFM deleted I tuned out the AFM from my computer permanently. No chip, just deleted from the OEM computer so it never looks for AFM again. I left all 8 of the AFM towers below the AFM manifold in the block open, did not plug them off as your note indicated plugging the towers can cause the AFM to activate when you don't want it to. I worried about this causing low oil pressure. On start up once the computer was programmed this engine runs like a top. Very quiet, great power and smooth at all times. I bought this truck broken so I can't speak to original MPG but after the delete on flat ground at 70 MPH this rig will get 20 MPG. With a 80 mile mix of Freeway and City I got 17.4 MPG. I am happy with this in a rig this size. Oil pressure sender was changed and the AFM filter deleted when I did the AFM delete because when this truck was received it showed zero oil pressure but the engine did not knock or rattle so I knew it had real oil pressure. Hot Oil Pressure was 20 PSI at idle and above Idle it hit about 32-35 and never went higher at any RPM. I know GM says this oil pressure is normal. As an engine guy my whole life I did not like this low oil pressure. I pulled the Oil pan off and replaced the O'Ring on the oil pump pick up tube. While the pan was removed I pulled the High Oil Pressure relief valve off the oil pan and plugged that hole with a 3/8 pipe plug/engine plug. This relief valve is supposed to open when you have more than 75 PSI in the system. This is a safety to protect your AFM lifters from high oil pressure which could cause them to have problems. I think either the Oring on the pick up tube was leaking causing low oil pressure or the relief valve was releasing at a low oil pressure. After this repair I installed a factory AC Delco oil filter and new Castrol 5-30 oil. Hot idle oil pressure is now 30 PSI, at any RPM over 1,000 oil pressure is above 40 PSI and maxes out at 60 PSI near 5,500 RPM. I am happy with the oil pressure now. Engine runs very quiet, power is good. No sign of oil consumption and the oil in the pan with a couple hundred miles on it is so clean it is hard to see it on the dip stick. Before removing the oil pan I ran it for 30 minutes at 1,800 RPM after adding 1 quart of ATF fluid. This works as a nice cleaner inside the engine. I would not run it loaded while you clean as ATF is not as good at protecting parts but does a good job of cleaning parts. Then I drained it and pulled the pan. The old oil looked OK before the ATF 30 minute run, it was due for an oil change so slightly dirty, a little brown in color. IT was Jet black on the drain so I did remove a lot of gunk from the engine with this flush. I have yet to determine if the car will pass smog with the AFM deleted or if the Smog check techs will even check to see if the car has AFM. Other than that, zero codes now, no check engine light have tripped since the AFM was deleted. Charles your parts worked exactly as you described and were delivered very quick. Thank You. Keep up the great work. Mark

I have a 07 Tahoe and it collapse #7 while I was on a trip. I drove it 200 miles to get home. I knowed it destroyed the cam or roller on the lifter but to my surprise when I tore it down all was fine. I made me a tool and unbelievable the lifter reset. This has saved me a ton of money. I'm a diesel mechanic but no way would I have knowed this trick. I orded the vlom plug from you and put all back together . Once I fired it up it was missing still but the slap was gone. Pulled the #7 spark plug and it was shot where I had to drive it so far. Put new plug in and runs like a champ now. Getting it tuned tomorrow. I can not thank you enough. None of the gas mechanics around here does your trick. Knowledge is power. Thank you over and over.

My 07 did the same on the way home from vacation. Number 7 also. We stopped, it fixed itself somehow. 75 miles later no 1 dies. I'm contemplating this or full dod delete. The truck has a bazillion miles. The instrument readout doesn't work, just the gauges. Would it be worth trying this or just pull the cam?

A local repair shop quoted me 5k to fix my lifter issue. Pull the heads, replace the cam and all that. I didn't think for a second that i wiped my cam. I drove it only a few miles to get home once the ticking began. I was ready to do the work myself since I felt confidant I could, I was a certified mechanic in my twenties and a car nerd for years. I found your video though and what a genius idea.. bought the kit, did everything in the video exactly and got the exact result you did INCLUDING the push-rod launching itself across the barn.. lmao. Needle scaler did the trick where the hammer couldn't too. Thank you sir, you are a life saver and you have my respect.

I have a late 2007 ChevyTahoe 5.3 V8 with 160,000 miles. It had a cylinder 7 misfire. I replaced the plugs and wires. That did not fix it. I checked the coil and fuel injector. Still did not fix it. I replaced the intake manifold gaskets because I read that a vacuum leak could cause this problem. Still no success. I watched this video and followed his instructions carefully. It worked exactly like the video. The intake valve lifter was stuck and I had the “service stabiltrak“ warning and the check engine light was blinking. This video saved me a lot of money. Tool worked great on releasing a collapsed lifter. I did the VLOM modification where I cut the seals and inserted the oil sending unit plug. I have a Range to disable AFM as well. After driving a few miles (it drove absolutely perfect) the truck started to miss on the same cylinder. I was bummed 😢 thinking the locks on the lifter were shot. This works!!! I bought the premium tool and a plug, followed this procedure and the one linked that walks through removing the intake manifold. Freed a stuck #4 lifter in a 2007 Suburban and saved a friend of mine lots of money and hassle. Thank you so much for discovering and sharing this in such a clear way. Our lifter wasn't releasing even using a needle scaler, but we shot some Sea Foam down onto the lifter and it popped right out after that. The engine was still a bit warm, so I don't know if it was the cooling or lubricating of the Sea Foam, but that might be something to try as a last resort.

WELL WORTH THE MONEY VS A FULL DELETE PRICE. *** Oil pressure gauge went up after this repair *** I Bought the premium lifter release tool, $53 kit. Took about 15 medium hits with a nail hammer and out went the pushrod. I had the lifter on the highest part of the lobe In my 2011 Escalade with a 6.2 and 112k miles. Local friends were saying they’ll sell me snake oil next and didn’t believe it will work. Well for $53 or less, if you get the other tool he sells, it was worth a try vs about $1000 + for a full delete with tune or even just replacing the afm lifters on the one side that failed. It still adds up vs trying this 1st. I also did the VLOM mod in this video. Next I’ll delete the afm crap in the ecu. I’ll update if anything happens.

This happened to my 2007 Sierra 1500 at 140,000 miles. I found this guy and realized what the problem really was (god bless youtube). I really hated having to tear my engine apart so I tried a whole can of sea foam in the oil. I let it idle 45 minutes (noisy as heck!). I then bought the Range device and drove about 50 miles and the noise and misfire gradually improved until the noise went away and the truck ran perfectly! changed the oil again after about 200 miles and I think I saved myself a ton of work. You can definitely do a direct swap with a new spring type lifter. You will also want to change the gaskets if you do that. What I ended up doing included swapping everything including the camshaft, oil manifold, solid lifters, etc. You will also have to send in the ECM to delete the displacement on demand system. They sell what I believe are called DOD delete kits with everything needed. And there should be a link on this page for where to send the ECM to be programmed.

1st: The reason that GM used 4 cylinder mode during a stability event was to reduce engine torque to try to stop the tires from positive slip (loosing traction). 2nd: the reason you are experiencing the odd engine running during your road test was the system shutting off the cylinder fuel and spark before realizing that the cylinders did not shut off the lifters at the same time. Now the PCM will reestablish fuel and spark to the 4 cylinders and set the engine light and run more correctly. Good Luck in the future, great video!

This is excellent info on resetting a collapsed lifter, and modifying VLOM to keep it in full time 8 cyl. For trucks that do not yet have this problem, is to tune out AFM either by a custom tune or a "Range Devise". This will keep engine from going into 4 cylinder mode and likely keep from doing this type of damage. Another very important thing do do is change oil every 3500 - 4000 miles. These engines seem to be oil sensitive. Doing so will help eliminate problems like plugged PCV passage built into the drivers side valve cover and plugged oil pressure filter screen. DO NOT RELY ON OIL LIFE MONITOR!!
@nordicpride9708

The valve cover needs to be updated due to having an integrated PCV. This will usually stop oil usage and prevent the #7 cylinder misfire these things love to develop in higher mileage

Thanks for the detailed video! Everywhere I go around the internet, people seem to be very concerned with plugging up the lifter oil channel towers, either with a new non-vlom valley cover from a 4.8 with gaskets, or by using a Lingenfelter rivot kit. Your approach goes completely in the opposite direction by removing the gasket material, and leaves those wide open to the pressure in the valley. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this, and if it's something that needs to be done. I just want me engine to last as long as possible!

This guy deserves a comment. Tool arrived very quickly and did its job releasing a stuck lifter. I would like to add so it may help someone else. I started with my failed lifter in the base of the lobe position so if i damaged the lifter i could turn over the engine and the cam would force the lifter up and make easier if i ended up having to remove head and replace lifter. I tried the hammer method and the needle scaler method with no luck at first. Then i figured why not try turning the motor over little bit moving the lifter up a little bit past the spot with the oil feed hole on lifter and tried again. With two small hits with a hammer out came the pushrod and lifter uncollapsed. This guy deserves alot as he has saved many people loads of time, money, ect. Also i will add for those with oil pressure issues at hot idle this vlom mod significantly improved oil pressure as well. Thanks again and keep up the hard work.

Just did this fix to my son's 2008 Silverado yesterday and it was a success. His #6 intake lifter was hung up, and it had erratic oil pressure most likely from the finger-tight VLOM bolts. I reassembled and re-tuned it with My Diablo Trinity turning off the AFM "feature". I did not do any "hard deletes" to the VLOM to disable the AFM but I believe with the tuner turning it off I shouldn't need to. Thanks for the advice, the lifter popped up on the 2nd hit with a punch I ground at a 45-degree angle. Initial test drive with a "Mileage" tune from the trinity gave me between 17 and 18 mpg with mixed driving freeway and back roads at 55 and 70 mph running 10% ethanol fuel and outside temps of 10 degrees F so pretty good.
