I've always wondered how the Minimite siren sounded, my junior school had these all over the place except they were disused as there was a newer system with sounders installed. Love the second lift as well! 😁

Hey Caretaker! Can I take a look at the lift's motor room?

It looks they've fixed That plasterboard to the outside of a caged lift, could you see anything through the windows? I would have thought that woukd be covered under the listed status? That siren looks similar to a masterblaster!
@mrmattandmrchay6 жыл бұрын
Yes that could have been an open cage at one time. I remember loads of them were around in the 80s/90s. Nope didn't look in the shaft. Love the minimite sirens!

Here in the states I've seen them send call stations out for restoration and have the carpenters patch up the top hole and they'll remount the original hardware.
@mrmattandmrchay6 жыл бұрын
From some of the videos I've seen from the States, I can truly believe this. Some of the kit that's still running in the States is amazing. Here in the UK they wouldn't think twice about ripping out an old lift and fitting a new one with lower maintenance costs - all the old kit would be in the skip!
@lzh4950 Жыл бұрын
Singapore's Changi Airport Terminal 2's older lifts (by Mitsubishi) has pretty tall call stations too but flush against the wall, & its because they originally had arrow indicators @ the top indicating the lift's travelling direction, some keyholes to control the lift's operation, a set of call buttons lower down for wheelchair users & a 2nd set of such buttons higher up for other passengers. When the lifts were modernized in 2015, only the last set of call buttons were replaced, with all the other components removed & covered up with a blank metal panel

Never seen a lift alarm like that before XD
@mrmattandmrchay6 жыл бұрын
Ive seen a few like this. You have to think back to the alarm sounders that were available back when the lift was fitted. Electronic sounders were not really established until mid 80s. Before then bells were in use (and motorised sirens)
@ZZ9ProductionsOFFICIAL6 жыл бұрын
yeah. I am kinda surprised still that they didn't use a bell for the alarm - still always nice to see something out of the ordinary - ticks one of your lift filming criteria after all ;)
@juoig77993 жыл бұрын
So basically replacing a lift call button is just discarding the old one, thread out and connect the new one then mount it so the wires aren't sticking out for no reason but shocking people.

Listed buildings can be altered with permission- a lot depends on how much the modifications affect the original character of the building. Making the building more accessible or usable is often an acceptable reason to modify a listed building. Lifts are one of the things that are not one of the items that the heritage bodies are that concerned about as they are more of a building service rather than a feature. This will be similar to other services such as toilets, kitchens and utilities such as water, electricity and gas. It is also worth noting that listed buildings have to be old before they are listed. In Scotland buildings are almost always over 30 years old before listing (and they would have to be exceptional to be listed that young). It is likely that the lift has already been modernised/altered before the building is listed. A lot of lifts in listed buildings were added after later to improve access with different degrees of subtlety. These lifts do not form part of the buildings character and would easily get permission for modification/removal/replacement. One, Grade A, listed building from 1905 I work in had a Stannah platform lift added in 2012 (in a cupboard so not visible for the vast majority of the customers). There are plans for major work to the building in the 2020s which would include disabled access improvements (proper lifts serving more of the building)- this may make the platform lift redundant but not missed.

In the UK does a Grade 2 historical listing protect the interior of a building? To my understanding in many cases buildings on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places only have the exterior of the building protected, and in some cases, the interior can even be completely gutted.

The one on the right at the beginning has a klaxon siren above it. I would love to have that alarm button pushed (or heard)!

Ok, had I watched the video more then.... I was bidding on a Gent 'The Strident' klaxon siren a month or so ago. Sadly, I did not win!

Alex Smith I have a collection of sirens, including Gent Stridents, they made really effective fire alarms!
@ajs21206 жыл бұрын
They are brilliant little alarms. I always remember when I was young, the swimming pool I went to had one that they used in the event of a pool emergency. Never used to enjoy that much when I was younger, now I'm continuously on the lookout for them! There are the newer style 'master blaster' sirens that I have seen in a few places, but none beat the Gent Stridents, chlorides etc.
@Steven1984h6 жыл бұрын
They sure are, such a distinctive sound. I just bough an older style master blaster off eBay a few days ago, the casing is cracked, but it works perfectly. Painfully loud! Have you seen the carters sirens that are grey in colour? They look similar to the stridents and chloride gent sirens, and are also really loud!
@ajs21206 жыл бұрын
Steven Baldock no I don't think I've seen one of those. I have seen one with a white casing and the end bit with the blades was red. Not sure what make that would have been.

How do you know whether the camera was a dummy cam or not?
@mrmattandmrchay6 жыл бұрын
I'm in the security trade and I can spot a dummy camera a mile off! This is a very old version where the 'tubes' (there are no wires in them) disappear into the frame. Some have junction boxes with "danger 240v" on them, when the box isn't large enough for housing mains voltage and most are 24VAC anyway. The angle of the camera are usually set to point directly at the person, whereas, this would then be the middle of the photo and have lots of ceiling and no floor in the picture. The flashing LED on the front where normal cameras do not have a visible LED and it only flashes because they cannot keep it on permanently else the AA battery that runs it will run down in no-time. The black glass on the front, where normally you'd see a separate camera inside. The unnecessarily camera housing where the actual camera on a bracket would suffice. There are lots of giveaways, and this dummy camera design has been around for about 20 years! (bet the AA batteries for the flashing LED ran out years ago!).

Depending on the grading of the system a self activating sound may be a requirement. Problem is placing a sounder on the front of the building may have been an issue. Just an educated guess (I used to fit alarms)

I am your biggest fan can you help me find what lift it is it’s at Davies house at Walsall
@mrmattandmrchay6 жыл бұрын
Hiya Dylan. Thanks for being my biggest fan :) :) That's just north of Birmingham. Any reason why you want to know what is inside "this" building? Just wondering, maybe someone you know lives in there. Well, the thing is it's very difficult to find old lifts these days. These are very likely to be modernised (in fact, I'd place a 95% probability they they are) especially on high use lifts, such as high rise blocks. The exterior of the building looks quite modern, and when these flats are tarted up, normally everything is including the lifts. So this is not going to be a place that I plan on visiting I'm afraid. Thanks for the message.
@pianodylan31806 жыл бұрын
mrmattandmrchay the building was built in the60s and the lift has t been replaced only modernised a bit and it doesn’t say what lift it is inside the cab I know it used to be an oldotis then modernised by Bennie and modernised by somebody else don’t know who
