I've mentioned it in another comment, but it is refreshing to see someone mention that the hunt isn't just about the hunt and the hunter's enjoyment, but also the dog's enjoyment and the bond between a the dog and handler. Great video as always!

Much appreciated! That connection with the dog is easily the greatest part of the pursuit of pheasants.

Great hunt, Sage was a little anxious but you certainly shot well. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! I’ll give her some grace when there are that many birds in the light grass. They’re running like crazy. Not much we can do until they get pushed into thicker cover.

Nice hunt! Nail directly on the head with closing comments. Thanks for reminding me of one of my favorite sayings posted on my desk that got me through some of the "rougher" days of teaching and coaching: " It's the moments we remember, not the days." Make moments. I love Sages drive. I've commented before how I love that Sage immediately starts looking around after a retrieve. I don't need a head pat boss. You can SEE her thinking, "Where 's the next one?" I had a wonderful dog once that helped me understand the saying, You can pull a rope in but you can't push it. We bought a lot of chicken for a few years! That dog taught me to never fault effort with the rest of them. I think your channel is so well liked Lucas because you are good at keeping perspective and you show and share the BOND quit often. I for one appreciate that. Sorry this is long but my favorite chapters of MY Kingdom For A Lab, are the last few that share precisely what you are feeling. Bond always trumps performance. You could have wrote it! :). Keep em coming.

Thanks so much for sharing that. As Sage ages, I’ve come to really appreciate “us” as I hunt. I’ll always find more pheasants, I won’t always be able to find more time with Sage. Hope you guys are doing well!!

Another great video with you and Sage as faithful partners. Without my 10-year-old and eight month old Gwp’s I doubt I would be walking five or 8 miles in Montana every fall without them .My friend and I and his son hunted Huron South Dakota for the first time January 3 through the 12th , all public land. It was brutal weather for some Florida hunters! The dogs enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing your videos.
@jcwoutdoors9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! It is all about the dogs. Nothing better than seeing them do their thing. January in SD can be pretty brutal!
@jimkelley36849 ай бұрын
Sage is your partner, nothing better than that. Getting your next dog force broke to retrieve to hand would accomplish the level of a finished Lab, but it will not replace rhe bond you have with Sage. Your next dog will succeed because of you, your effort and demeanor, not to mention your local habitat, but it will be different. Sage will make that transition easier.. I can't wait to enjoy your next journey, especially watching Sage dealing with a new pup stealing her retrieves.
@jcwoutdoors9 ай бұрын
Thanks, Jim. You completely get it. A dog that is polished is great, but without the bond that has us hunting in tandem, I could care less. It will be interesting to see the next chapter begin. Mostly just sad to see this season come to an end and excited for October to roll around once again!

Excellent video! Being not only a gun hunter but a falconer as well the relationship with my dogs (English Pointers) is a deep one.. it truly becomes a team effort and it’s nice to hear another hunter recognize that relationship ❤
@jcwoutdoors9 ай бұрын
Thank you! I've watched some of your falconry videos, so amazing!! From what I've read, that is also a bond that transcends the physical. Have you ever read any of CJ Box's books? He's my favorite author and one of the main characters is a falconer. Anyway, thank you for commenting and, likewise, it's reassuring to come across other folks who know that hunting with an animal is a genuinely special experience.

Lucas, another great hunt.. Wow do you guys have a nice bird population and your birds in the bag are a tribute to your efforts and hunting style/skills. Sage does a great job and I would bet any avid bird hunter who watches your channel has had even the best of dogs have a day where they just run a bit more than they should. You are right that we all have off days and it's about being out in God's creation with your companion and friends.. Shooting birds is a bonus. You have mentioned several times in recent recordings about road hunting. Would like to politely share some thoughts to all on road hunters from a private land owner perspective. I farm in NE IA and by my own personal choice choose to have bird habitat in a prime farmland area. Between my land and the neighbors I rent.. it is the only real habitat for miles and mile around.. and therefore the only place where there are birds. I spend a considerable amount of time and $$ to ensure this habitat produces birds so we can have the enjoyment of seeing/hearing birds throughout the year, flushing birds with the combine and my son and I having a few hunts as well as bringing nieces/nephews hunting for youth season or having a friend or kid harvest their first rooster. It is incredible frustrating to watch trucks drive up and down the road, jump out and shoot birds. They have put zero time or resources into this and limit the opportunities for myself and my guests on my own land after putting in all the work/effort. I realize it is legal IF hunter and dog STAY in the right of way to flush a bird... but is there any consideration on what it takes to produce those birds and how one may be impacting those that put in the time/resources to have those birds there??? Just some food for thought to all those who do a lot of road hunting.. Have enjoyed all the videos again this season... Looks like your weather so far may have hens in excellent condition for spring. God Bless... Safe hunting.. Troy
@jcwoutdoors9 ай бұрын
Thanks, Troy. I can certainly see where Iowa is much different than most of SD when it come to habitat. I’ve heard from others about the nature of Iowa bird habitat basically being an oasis in the middle of a pheasant desert in many places. I’ve no doubt it’s frustrating, especially when people aren’t abiding by the laws. At the same time, the North American model of conservation does provide that wild animals are public domain. As hunting in America becomes more and more commercial, I strongly support any public hunting access, but completely understand and empathize with you and other landowners. Right of way hunting has had some contentious argument over the years here in SD. I’m sure it will rear its head again someday.

I stopped using the collar regularly about 5 years ago and haven’t had it on her at all this season. I know that there are times she’s going to get ahead, but I’m never bothered by it as I know we’ll find more birds. Good advice, though. I’m getting a pup here in the spring and she’ll need correction as she learns the game.
