My favorite example of light-painted flowers is in the last part of the Duran Duran music video, Ordinary World. I guess your technic is one way of achieving a similar result, but the light-painting approach I've used is by keeping the shutter on bulb while working in darkness. I've used gelled flashes from different angles, as well as, moving a penlight, or sparklers, through the scene. All the colors are exposed on one image.
