Great episode. I used to love rock fishing when I was younger, but unfortunately, I had a mini stroke a few years ago and my balance and vision is still a bit out of whack. So from now on its beach fishing for me. At least if I fall over, it's only on the sand. Hehe.

I love fishing light off the stones for mostly Bream and Flathead, with quite a few big Dart thrown in. Also, the odd Drummer and Blackfish which are a welcome by-catch, like you I use local Aussie school prawns for bait. My rig is a Snyder CR4 136 (Whiting rod) old Alvey 500a spooled with 6lb mono and 8lb fluro leader. I use a paternoster rig - size 1 star sinker and size 1 mustard bait holder hook, mostly. I lose a few Flathead (bitten off at my feet) but hey, that’s fishing 😀👍🏻

These videos are excellent, clear and easy. I'm new to rock fishing, and I've bought my first rod, a Penn 10"6. Only problem I find is the tip is very "soft" and sort of very whippy. Should I look for a stiffer more sensitive rod? I'd like to know what combos you are using 👍 thanks
@StarloGetsReel4 жыл бұрын
Tom, so long as the rod does its job it shouldn't matter if the tip is a bit "whippy".

Old but still relevant. Important rock fishing question: what's on your feet? Last century I was using sandshoes with the metal cleats drilled through the sole.
@StarloGetsReel2 жыл бұрын
I usually wear rock fishing sandals or rubber wetsut style booties with good grip. Cleats can be good on very flat, slippery stuff but can actually be dangerous on some surfaces. Horses for courses, I guess.

Thanks for the videos! im new to rock fishing and finding it hard to learn all the little details, would you have a book you could recommend that would fit in a tackle bag that is good for identifying these fish on the Australian east coast?

Great videos mate I’ve never seen anyone else use shimano coastline before, I’ve had mine for maybe 10 years or more 3-6kg and it’s my go to “everything” rod. I’m guessing they arnt available anymore as I’ve never seen another one. Keep up the great content 🙌🏻🐟

Thanks for that. Yes, brilliant rods. Ian Miller and I came up with the original concept for Shimano and that blank design has now featured in quite a few of their rod ranges over the years, using various materials. I know there's currently a version in their lower-priced Catana range: the CTRCOASTL. Check it out.

What do think about wearing steel baseball cleats when rockfishing, too much environmental damage?
@StarloGetsReel5 жыл бұрын
Really depends on the terrain. They can be useful on flat, slimy ledges but may actually be dangerous on uneven surfaces. I prefer grippy rubber or synthetic soles with a deep tread pattern.

Hey mate how you think of a Shimano anarchy 6-12kg with a 5000 sustain for rock fishing?
@StarloGetsReel2 жыл бұрын
Sounds okay. How long is it? Might be a bit short on the rocks. I rarely use anything less than 8 or 9 feet fro m the rocks. Sounds like you’re targeting some pretty big fish.

@@StarloGetsReel yes but I was looking at the catana rod but it said the suggested reel size is 4000-5000,won’t a 2500 be a bit small?
@StarloGetsReel2 жыл бұрын
@@joshzfishing make sure you go for the Coastline Light in the Catana range. It’s a very light rod and a 2500 or 3000 reel balances really well on it. There may be a heavier surf rod in that range so make sure you’re looking at the Coastline Light.
@joshzfishing2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate!But I am still confused about surf fishing.When I cast,do I cast beyond the breaking wave?Also,if there is a rip current or a gutter,do I cast into that?
@StarloGetsReel2 жыл бұрын
@@joshzfishing the fish can be anywhere, so try different spots until you get bites. Cast over the actual shore break or dump that’s right at your feet, but sometimes the fish are JUST beyond that, especially if there’s a bit of depth there. Definitely fish gutters and holes but don’t rule out other areas too. Stay mobile. If you don’t get a bite after a couple of casts, move or try a different length cast. 👍
