Lighting Exteriors with Maya and V-Ray

This tutorial takes you the through the process of lighting exterior scenes in Maya using V-Ray. We go over techniques on how to effectively use the V-Ray Sun/Sky, Dome Light with HDRIs, V-Ray Fog, and other various techniques. We also learn how to use V-Ray Environment Overrides to be able to get creative results for our lighting.

Really dig the lighting tutorial man, thanks. I do this for a living, but whenever I watch something like this, I almost always see something I never knew before. Here, e.g., the sun/sky and bkgd image technique. And then, how to adjust that bkgd image. Very cool. I also like the idea of creating a special render layer just for light-testing purposes. Don't know why I hadn't thought of that.

I really love your Interior and Exterior Lighting tutorials, and your Character Modeling series is THE BEST! I refer back to them all often as I learn and practice. Could you do an Environment Modeling series in the future (something similar to your Character Modeling series) where you walk through how to create the environment in this video, for example? That would officially make this the best channel on KZbin!

For this scene, you said it was built to scale. Did you add each model into setting? I've been having issues setting up scenes. I model in real world scale but from reference image. Now I need to learn how to do scenes/environments.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Do you know why when I change the custom background in overrides I get a black background in my render? I did exactly like you did, but the image it's totally black. This happens only with vray physical cam. I'm using vray 5! thanks

If you save as a PNG, it will save the background as Black because Alpha is Transparency. You could save as a JPG if you need a quick render or add the 'Background' Render Element to render out the background and composite the image in Photoshop.

@@OnMars3D Thank you. But I get the black background in my vray frame buffer... I want to visualize the background I set in override.... I realize the override turn black when in combination with the vray physical cam... do you know why? Thank you again.

When i open the render settings and under the GI tab i only see "Engine [Light cache] ". But in the youtube tutorial there is " Primary bounces : Engine [brute force].. / Secondary bounces: Engine [light Cache].. ". Send help!
