Kitchen lighting often doesn't get the attention it really deserves. Lighting the kitchen properly can have a massive impact on both the overall functionality and design. In this episode, I discuss the various ways to light your kitchen- from pot lights to undercabinet lighting. Both general lighting and task lighting serve important roles in the final design.

Clear, organized, and technically specific presentation. Especially helpful was your advice to place overhead pot lighting 24” out from wall so it hits the end of the counter, and divide the room height in half to get the spacing between the overhead lights. Thank you!

for a cheap way to reduce the background hiss you can use audacity's noise removal tool. just make sure you get some room tone first to train it on

Do the pendant lights go right on the middle? I'm talking about the width between the distance where person washes dishes and the front where they seat. Seems like it leans towards where the stools are, but I dont see anyone explaining rule of thumbs

This really depends on the space. I tend to centre my island pendants. After all they are meant to evenly light the island as task lighting.

I have a question... I am wanting to do inside cabinet lighting with glass fronted doors to show off a china set, but i have wooden shelving... can i run an LED strip of lights in an upside down "U" shape on the back side of the face frames that shines toward the back of the cabinet? My goal is to get each shelf as evenly lit as i can. Pucks are ok, but i am not fond of seeing the beam angle of light. Great tip on starting the recessed lights at countertop edge! Thanks for such great content!

Depending on the kitchen, could be over a sink, a peninsula, even a work surface with no wall cabinets above.

If you put your pot lights 24" or so from the wall in a kitchen, this places it too close to any full depth cabinets or range hoods. The hood in the kitchen you filmed this is an example of what happens, you have the light pretty close so it produces hot spots and shadows under it. So do you stagger the pot lights in and out depending on the depth of the cabinets? If you have them at 36" from the wall you can line them all up. If you stand at the counter, the pot lights will light the counter from the side so you are not in a shadow, plus you (should) have undercounter lighting to light up the counter.

I make sure my spacing doesn't interfere with 24" depth cabinets (never had a problem). Even around the hood, they have 8" off the hood and still light up straight down. Generally where you have deep cabinets, you aren't working anyways and at that point it is either for continuity or general light. Yes undercabinet lights are important, but it many kitchens (including mine), I have no wall cabinets in one section and therefore depend on ceiling lights. If they are 36" from the wall, you will cast a shadow on your work surface. Lighting plans are very kitchen specific and a good one takes time to plan. This is why fast builders just shove 4 pots in the center of a kitchen- its easy and requires no thought or planning.
