In the Lighting on Location series I take you behind the scenes to one of my photography sessions to explain the creative direction, thought process, location, lighting that lead to the final results.
This session in particular covers a short, 30 minute session where we did a few looks to communicate a professor's efforts in studying analytics on drones. I go over how I chose to balance the lighting in a split-color hallway with blue overcast light outdoors and warm LED lighting inside. Then we go to a cafeteria that was packed with distractions but allowed for an abstract representation of the article's purpose.

Explaining the original requirement and the thought processes that went into making the images is way more helpful than 99% of photography tutorials out there. Concept to delivery is how it works in the real world. Excellent video sir, thank you!

Great video, all photography videos should be like this one: about the project and the communication, not just the gear.

Brilliant playing with color temperature balancing along with gels on strobes. I love the way you isolated the ceiling tiles. You have inspired to find something to shoot like that.

You sir, are a beast! The ability to work quickly, with people that don't necessarily even want to be photographed, and on top of that thinking about abstract compositions. Wow! Very impressive. Thanks for the great video and for all the great tips.

One of the most powerful tools for any photographer, observation. What a difference the blue panels made to the final picture. Thanks for sharing Robert :)

Rob They need to bring you on as assisting teaching staff at OU ;) I did half my degree here in photography (the digital half, traditional film half at GVSU) and they never touched on flash temperatures like this. .. maybe I’m just old and it was a different time. Let me know if you ever need a hand or assist I’m nearby as you know and on campus quite a bit between sports & family members faculty and I’m always open to learning.

nice result, but showing which CTO/flash you have put where would have made the entire video much easier to understand. make a simple drawing or use a gopro next time :)

Cheating by leaning,takes me back to my movie grip days,angling the name plate on an open door to make it appear level. Another 9.25 mins well spent.

Holding the nose of a gardening leaf-blower with my own hand, so the air stream would go straight into my face... making for a fake storm, with the help of a close-up framing. Yep... we've all been through these cheats, so our viewers can see their "truth". I know technicians love it when actors can take some burden off their shoulders. And you know what... I just love that when I act on a set ?! It's like letting the photographer-in-me taking part into a creation that's actually not his own. The hard part being you have to shut it up as an actor, even though you want to give advice as a photographer ! Funny a dilemna. If all this makes any sense...! 🤔

This looks really cool, I love it! Off-topic: Do you have ability to check out the new AD1200 Pro to see if it has a USB jack to accept the Godox R1 receiver? I'm thinking of picking one up but can't tell if it will take R1 receivers or not. Thanks.

i have a location shoot coming up and re-watched this vid for inspiration. if i may ask: how long did it take you to figure out the power needed for the two AD200Pro units pointed to the ceiling? did you do all of this lighting setup with the client standing in or did you have this all setup done and the client stood in and you tweaked? again (and again!) thanks for the effort and the sharing. thumbs up.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 2 жыл бұрын
We came from a previous setup so the client was there and waiting. And I'd say it took about 30 seconds to figure out the output. Test at 1/16, adjust once, start shooting.

What is your easiest/fastest way to determine what the colour temp is, and how much/what type of gel you need
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/rprYdnaAaJKWqMU This video covers the various ways to do it. The easiest way is once it clicks in your head, youre capable of eyeballing Kelvin temperature just from seeing a light source. But until you build that experience you can use your camera to figure it out.

@@robhallphoto okay, yeah, thats what I do too. I come from a film bakground and have been at it for many years, and have been wanting to more precise method. A color meter is toooo expnsive, but awesome for filmmaking. Havent used it for photography, so I stuck with the white balance thing for photos as you are doing. Was curious if there was a better way, but seems were on the same page
