My favorite version of him doing this song... he kills it. Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins (1912-1982). Texas blues master.

I met him when I was a little boy at my Aunt Flora's home in Mississippi he played for us and we danced til we couldn't stand anymore. I love you Uncle Lightnin' and will always remember your wise words

I bought a cheapo import compilation cassette of Lightnin' back in '87 or so with this on it, and absolutely loved it, had a heck of a time since finding another recording of it

I agree. I love this tune too esp the way Lightnin plays it. Lightnin's showmanship was so fun to see the different ways he'd hold his guitar, hit it, play unique rhythm patterns. Then just calmly sit back when he's done, like, *any questions*? When I first heard Lightnin's version of this song I was going to email everybody I knew (include a link to the song) and request that it be our new National Anthem instead of the one we have. You gotta admit, it's rousing !!!

Sweet tune - Lightnin' could have been a country or folk star as well as a blues legend :o)

This version is so beautiful that it's my favorite right next to Mance Lipscomb's version of the song.

Yes! noticited that too, Shaggy Dog is great alternative tune to this one. Great lyrics. This is a fun one to play, C,F and G rhythm playing the open/third frets on the B and E strings for the melody. Sounds easy but it is suprisingly complicated, well not that suprising since Lightnin is a guitar beast

I always hear one of songs on Spotify and think “oh man I bet I could play this one!” Until I pull up these old videos and see lots of intricacies my ears hadn’t heard before. Especially with the way he basically plays the rhythm and lead at the same time! So I’d have to agree all of his music is surprisingly complicated

Frank Stokes, who was about 24 years older than Hopkins, also recorded this song.

Blind Lemon Jefferson did a version in 1926, "Beggin' Back" Same tune. I think it's just one of those standards of unknown origin.

Yeah, Blind Lemon does a version, too "Beggin' Back." Anyway, I love Henry Thomas. Somebody found a clip of film footage with him in it last year, no sound, though.
