My favorite episode of Korra is probably when she is forced to go to Zaheer for help (I don't remember the episode name) and he realizing his mistakes shows her how to connect to the spirit world and restore her balance. It not only shows great character development on her part but also on the side of Zaheer whom after losing everything that he held dear is aware of his mistakes and wants to make amends.

Cool videos, man! Another potential example for you here: remember in the Crossroads of Destiny, how Aang momentarily lets go of his attachment to Katara and unlocks all the chakras? He actually flies in that scene! You can see him levitating slowly up, and without the usual swirling ball of air. If this is the same kind of flight as Zaheer's, then it seems that the special bending techniques are about mastering more than their respective elemental Chakras, but others as well. As the lion turtle says, "we bend not the elements, but the energy within ourselves." Flight is achieved when the air Chakra and the thought Chakra are combined, and perhaps combustion bending is achieved when the fire and light (forehead) Chakras are combined.

Lavabending might be a fusion of earth and water chakras. Fire is most tought of because the earth is heated up, but lava is more like water. Also I think Bolin was ashamed of being unable to have an advanced technique, but he didn't felt guilty of something.

Another big problem with this theory is that we already have a very good reason why iroh puts emphasis on the stomach detour, it's not that the lightning needs to go through the lower torso, it's that the electricity must absolutely not go through the heart, as this could cause a heart attack.

There are two examples I can think of where Aang's air bending chakra becomes blocked. When he is so consumed by his greif over losing Appa that he nearly destroys all the sand benders, and when he first discovers that all of his friends and family were killed by the fire nation. The blocking of his fire bending chakra probably came from two seperate things as well. When he realises that he ran away for about a century and when he lost Ba Sing Se to the fire nation. Okay so one of those things happened well after he went through the whole of the che unblocking thingy.

Ang could have actually killed Ozai when he DID redirect the lightning!!! But he kept the surge in himself. For killing even Ozai directly conflicts with his fourth chakra dealing with love and his six chakra dealing with insight because as an Airbender, he has a deep sense of love in the world and how every creature deserves to be loved and deserves it's a place in it. (Even in his point of view the most hated and despicable man in the entire world the Phoenix king Ozai). And that's why the lightning is absorbed by Ang. He is so powerful that it doesn't kill him it just takes him out for a few seconds.

It isn't absorbed, he just redirects it away from both of them but it takes him a little too long to redirect it and he gets hurt from it. Aang still is really powerful tho cuz he stopped Ozai without killing him.

(I got asked this question by an earlier commenter, so I'll just copy and paste) I did think about talking about this, but Zuko lost his ability to firebend because he had so long associated it with his anger and frustration with the world. That was a large part of how he learned to use it and fuel it. The reason his firebending diminished was because he lost the anger and frustration that he had so long practised fuelling his bending with, as opposed to because he felt incredible shame (and thus restricting his fire chakra). There are a number of things that contribute to bending abilities (most prominently genetics/training/chakras), but that example was to do with his skills/training I felt, rather than chakras :) Hope this helped! ~ Tim

I've had a theory about chakras for a while. I think there's a difference between a chakra being open and a chakra being "on" or "activated". As you said in the last video, Guru Patik mastered all the chakras, so his were all open. But he wasn't a bender, meaning that none of the bending chakras were activated. This is how I think bending works. Lion turtles activated a bending chakra in someone, and this releases a lot of contained energy (you can tell based on how Wan acts after he receives fire). I think this contained energy is the reason Raava had to hold the other elements for Wan, too. Humans aren't able to handle the amount of energy from more than one bending chakra being activated. Tl;dr: chakras can be opened and activated. Activation=bending Any thoughts?

These are some really good thoughts! I've been puzzling over the Lion turtles/non-benders to benders thing for quite a while now. It's possible that there are different 'modes' a chakra can be in. Guru Pahtik noted that Aang's thought chakra would be 'locked', rather than closed - which I found interesting. I'll have to look more into this, but thanks for your thoughts! ~ Tim

Jordan Bates I agree, and I think you can take it further. Basically, thought, light, and sound are elements as well. Meaning that if you "activated" these chakras, you could bend light, sound, and thought (idk how that would work but still). However, the way to activate them has been forgotten for a long time. Also, the last remaining lionturtle gives Aang the power to energybend, possibly meaning that energy is another element. Most likely, there is an eighth chakra somewhere in your body that no one knows about that if activated, gives you the power to energybend. My head is spinning.

Okay I like the way this is set out, but I don't think that chakras are activated/on, I feel more like that the flow of chi through a chakra, is either inwardly flowing, or outwardly flowing. To be more specific if your chakra was outwardly flowing than you would have the ability to bend, from what that respective chakra is, and that if inwardly flowing, it does not allow for any external abilities, (other than giving mastery of advanced bending techniques) but instead makes your inner chi flow freely, allowing you to be a balanced person. And this would also give a good reason for why people in the avatar universe can't bend more than 1 element (other than the avatar), my thought being that if a person where to have more than 1 chakra outwardly flowing, it would cause an imbalance in chi throughout the body.

I really enjoy your videos especially about avatar and legend of Korra. You're very insightful and your theories are fun and plausible. Your videos aren't too long or overly complicated but the perfect length for binging or (for me) passing time on the bus ride to and from work. Keep up the good work! My favorite episode from Avatar is a tie between the episode where Zuko and Katara find the man who killed her mother and the final episode. The lessons we pull from both are amazing. My favorite legend of Korra episode is in the final season when Korra goes to confront kaheer and he guides her back to the spirit realm, that episode feels very personal for me because it is Korra dealing with her trauma and the lesson from that makes me tear up a bit.

I have a theory about why Katara learned fast to bloodbend. Just like Zaheer unblocked air chakra and learned the ability to fly from beating grief after Pli's death, and Bolin unblocked earth chakra and learned lavabending from beating fear when lava was about to kill him, probably katara unblocked water chakra couse she had to beat her guilt sense for using that tecnique (in fact for her it was not fair to bloodbend someone) in order to stop Hama from killing Aang and Sokka. Or, for example, facing the guy from the southern raiders, she wanted to bloodbend him couse she was angry for her mother and probably didn't have any guilt sense to use bloodbending. And i'm thinking that Zuko did not learn lightning bending because he was full of shame couse he was banished and dishonored from his father and fire chakra is blocked by shame!

Ice bending and blue fire aren't advanced techniques. Ice for example seems to be just something water benders do. While Azula's blue fire had more to do with the power she was putting behind it, her flames were just hotter. Which is impressive that she was bending at such high power consistantly without exhuasting herself, but that's just mastery of the basics rather than a whole new advanced skill.

Some interesting theories about advanced bending. However, there are some simpler explanations. You don't want electricity to pass through the heart because it will kill you. As to the belly being the sea of chi, the stomach is given a great deal of importance in Asia. The combustion man has to control his breathing in a meditative/yoga manner. Fire needs oxygen and Iroh stressed breathing to Zuko in season 1.

slapfacegamer hasn't seen the ones that can produce fire from chi or heal (non-simple) wounds/aliments with chi manipulation China, Tibet, and like areas have the highest reports of what we'd consider "super"humans but really they just have a better understanding of the world. Part may be genetic but part is our restricted world view. Generations of removing that limit helps make it easier for those down the line (hence why those areas have so many) Remember that all science was once viewed as "magic"

that's easy to say now. but season 1 was supposed to be the only season. Nick pushed them to do season 2 which they thought was going to be the last season which is why the dark avatar was the villain. He was supposed to be the series final boss. When season 2 came around, the creators started to realize what's going on and was when they started to foreshadow season 4 by introducing kuvira. It's not really fair to say that they should have planned from the start when they didn't know when it ends.

One more addition to your chi and mastery theory (wow that was quite a rhyme) comes from one of the ATLA games I used to play as a kid. I don’t know if these are canon or not, but I specifically remember playing a fighting game (much like Mortal Kombat but ATLA style). In that fighting game, you could build up Chi and when that Chi meter was full, you got to do a super awesome special attack It could just be a game mechanic but I’d like to think it holds a bit of relevance to the topic

I just discovered a cool detail you may have missed and I haven't found a way to pm you, so I'll just drop this message here: So I was talking to my mum when I used the turkish word for poison: "Zehir". It immediately stroke me and I did some research: Apparently it originates from a persian word I am unable to pronounce but I guess to be pronounced "zahir" (because that change from a to e happens to a lot of originally foreign word that we use in turkish). It might of course be a coincidence, but it'd be an interesting thing to mention in potential future videos about zaheer nonetheless. Cheers and keep up your amazing work!

Zuko did become less powerful because of fear, because he afraid he was a trader to his uncle, that he had did him wrong, and an upon finding his way , he had to go his own way .. not sure if I said it right. But,I know what I meant. All I was saying was , that there was a situation where. Bender had become weaker because of fear. And I have other examples too.

I think it should also be noted that the states needed where only for when the users of the sub element were... well... newbies... I mean, it was the same for when Aang first learned Earth Bending. Because he couldn't think solid and face things head on, he couldn't start learning it. But once mastered to a certain degree, I don't think he needed to worry about it. I think the only exception was with Zuko, but that was probably more of his drive than anything, because fire bending produces energy...

3:55 I think you could argue that this was happening with Aang when he was first learning earthbending. He was fearful of the rock rolling down the hill and ran away. But when he faced his fears and faced the sabretoothmooselion (I think that's right?) head on he was then able to earthbend after, even though he didn't even earthbend the animal away. So maybe it's down to your relative level in the bending art. Someone that's very experienced overcoming those feelings unlocks more advanced bending whereas a beginner doing something similar let's them bend if they couldn't manage it before.

I think that rather than grief, air benders are blocked by attachment. When Aang unblocked all of his chakras (briefly) and let go of Katara, he started flying before he got struck down. As soon as Zahir had nothing to be attached to, he also gained his ability to fly.

Although I don't fully agree with your Chakra theory, I do really like your idea. And I especially like how you presented it. And I really like your points at the end. One thought is that these chi pathways may also enlarge with continued practice, the same way blood vessels enlarge through exercise. Although it may vary between advanced techniques, it may be possible to use say lightning (for example) through "muscle memory" even if the person is emotionally out of balanced. This would explain why Azula could lightning bend even though she definitely didn't have "peace of mind". There is also an example of an athlete who got one of his arteries clogged, but because he had developed so many secondary blood vessels through exercise, the blood simply by-passed the clog.

Theoretically, every bender other than the fire bender has the potentially be OP. Water: controls blood Earth: controls dust (which is what the body is made of as seen with death. Air: the oxygen in your blood and the air in your lungs. Fire: can burn stuff.

You could argue that this means that as the number of past lives an Avatar has access to increases, the less advanced bending they are able to achieve in the Avatar state. The more lives they draw from the higher the chance that at least one of the personalities they are accessing will partially block the chakra.

Someone else mentioned their observation that all the sub-types of bending either require or invoke the opposite attitudes of their elements; metalbending and lavabending requiring fine control and a sort of flow, or adaptability that earth often lacks; lightningbending requiring an unsympathetic, calm control that is difficult in the least for the passions of fire, and bloodbending needing a forced will, a violent control of another that fits better with earth than water. I add that icebending also promotes a solidity unlike water alone, and sandbending also requires an uncommon control and flow for earth. However, I suggest a step further, that there is an undiscovered sub-bending type to air: Air solidifying. Keeping with the theme of opposite emotion, an airbending subtype would require rigidity and a possibly violent unwillingness to change, and with semi-solid techniques like Aang's air scooter, and the application he used to whirlwind-rapidfire coal bits, a logical Rigid, brutal expression of airbending would be to compress or solidify air itself into a forced, unyielding object. The applications I can think of suggest opposingly rigid use as well: air steps to walk on across the sky without losing your footing, air walls to defend against powerful, direct attacks, or even solid air blades, more similar to the wind ninjitsu of the Naruto series than the slice attacks Aang makes. As for finding these techniques, most of the post-harmonic convergence airbenders are from the earth kingdom, and some even display rigid attacks. I believe it's only a matter of time until one of them or their descendants gets frustrated by glider flight and stomps off into the air, or blocks a powerful assault instead of dodging it. Maybe even hitting someone with an airball violently and doing more damage than they expected to could reveal this hypothetical subtype. And with the next avatar being an earth nation native, I definitely believe it to be possible, and revealed, in a later series if there is one after Korra. didn't Aang mention an air blade once? I believe it's in the episode where Sokka gets his sword Aang gets this massive piece of armor and an empty sword hilt and explained that some people could bend air in the form of a blade that could actually cut through stuff

I have a theory about why Katara learned fast to bloodbend. Just like Zaheer unblocked air chakra and learned the ability to fly from beating grief after Pli's death, and Bolin unblocked earth chakra and learned lavabending from beating fear when lava was about to kill him, probably katara unblocked water chakra couse she had to beat her guilt sense for using that tecnique (for her it was wrong to bloodbend someone) in order to stop Hama from killing Aang and Sokka. Or, for example, facing the guy from the southern raiders, she wanted to bloodbend him couse she was angry for her mother and probably didn't have any guilt sense to use bloodbending

Balanced with Sokka's attempt to bargain his way out of the crack he falls into by giving up meat and sarcasm. For Korra, definitely the story of Wan, the first avatar. Something I've always wondered is how is it that some benders are able to actually conjure lightning as opposed to redirecting existing lightning? Like how Mako in Korra occasionally will conjure lightning out of nowhere and how Ozai was able to do the same.

Just for thought Lava bending is possible because of the energy that fire brings which is creation and just energy . Like lava and fire have the hot and very destructive properties if that makes sense. Combustion bending is just the beginning of fire which is just the combustion so combustion bending is just focusing on that aspect of fire which is combustion

I think there’s two things that affect your ability to have advanced bending techniques there’s what you said the mastery of different chakras but I think genes might also have a impact on advanced bending for example I think that in order to become a lava bender you need to have a fire nation parent and a earth bender parent this gives you the genes but the genes aren’t always enough you also need to have mastery of each elemental chakra. When you master your chakra for that specific element that will activate the advance bending technique. For lightning your relatives have to have the ability to bend lightning but that’s only a gene that you have you also need to master the fire chakra to activate your gene. This is how I think you can gain the ability to have advanced bending. You get the genes you need then you master the chakra from the advanced bending and then that activates an advanced bending technique.

Also Zuko redirecting lightning, while a fire bending skill, is actually based in water bending and can be him getting rid of his guilt and unlocking the water chakra. Boom somehow with that personal piece of head cannon I find Zuko even cooler.

Actually we have seen some bending effected by chakra blocking when Zuko lost his firebending. It was said he lost his rage but what if it was more he felt shame for all he had done for his father and the shame remained after he defied his father and came to the obvious question, "what was it all for?". There is also the noted shame of travelling with those you once tried to kill and the fact that once he thought he had changed he burned Toffs feet and possibly felt shame at again causing destruction with his fire despite trying to help others for once. It can also be said that Zuko let his shame go after he danced with the dragons because he realised his shame was holding him back and the only way to atone for it was to use his abilities to correct his past wrongs.

Could you do a video on Irohs potential shame? I always forget that he was the rightful heir, but gave up the throne. I imagine he probably has a ton of shame and guilt for giving the throne to a maniac who tried to take over the world. I'm sure that if Iroh took the throne, he would've ended the war and changed the world for the better... It makes me sad to think that Iroh probably lives with that guilt and shame, knowing he's a good man and would've been a fair and kind ruler.

I really like the world of avatar. and I have been thinking about advanced techniques. What i have came up with is fire: light bending. you could become invisible because you can wrap the light around you. or even create a mirage. And for Air: pressure. you could create so much pressure some couldn't move of take all the pressure away and create a vacuum. and at last (but I don't know to which bending it would belong) gravity bending, sound bending and the best for last space and time bending. Let me know what you think of the techniques I came up with.

I always assumed that the lightning Aang redirected was boosted by sozins comet which is why he collapsed. That lightning was way bigger when he shot back then anything we had seen before.

With waterbending advancing to bloodbending, fire to lightning, and earth to combustion I predicted that airbending would advance to lightbending. I was extremely disappointed with flight, which is basically just stronger airbending. Its also something that the first airbenders (sky bison) could do yet the dragons never use lightning, the badgermoles never use combustion, and the moon spirit never uses bloodbending.

I find it to be all based on your personality. The beifong family are incredibly stoic even compared to other earth benders so metal bending is possible while for bolin who is very passionate he can’t metal bend but he can lava bend. The only other lava bender was shown to be very impassioned so much so that it caused his death. Healing is so common because it relies on empathy for others which most people have.
