And Sand and Glass are both made of Silicon Dioxide or other Silicone based compounds, so in theory is kind of possible because Sand-bending is possible... So at least an Earth-bender like Toph should be able to or at least numerous shards of glass

Reason #4859 why Kyoshi is a badass, from "The Shadow of Kyoshi" novel published on July 21st, 2020: "The shards of glass in her skin plucked themselves out under the force of her [Kyoshi's] earthbending and balled into a floating clump that dropped to the floor when she switched her focus to a nearby pitcher."

Andres Barea-Torres but it was already glass, now magma is only bendable because it is already hot, I think only the avatar would be able to bend sand and then turn it into glass. But they would already have had to master sand bending, fire bending, lava bending (fire bending), magma bending (debatable and earth bending) and earth bending in general. Now it would most likely only have to be one between magma and lava but I think lava seems more practical. The reason spongy the avatar can do this is becuase they would have to use fire bending and sand bending at the same time to be able to make glass, most likely only being able to do these two in the avatar state. Sand melts at 2700-2800F so it would have to be somewhat clumped already and it would have to be dry sand. You would first have to blue fire bend (as it is the only fire form in the element that can reach 2700F) onto dry sand, after you would lift it and form it into a desired shape with earth bending, after you would use water or air bending to cool it down very fast. And then with earth bending if you have the same power Kyoshi had, you can glass bent into somthing/someone.

Funny thing to me, when AtLA was still new, and I had friends making fan characters... I came up with a guy that was a glassbender. My instant thought was that "Hm, no one else is doing this. Seems interesting and complex." And I'd decided that he was extremely up tight, detail-oriented, and considered his bending skills to be an entire art form on its own that he refused to teach to others. Absolute dick, but a fun anti-hero type. lol

I found a form of firebending as scary as bloodbending. Considering lightning is a form of plasma you could probably concentrate it into a beam and create precision lasers. Meaning you could effectively use fire bending to perform brain surgery on someone via lasers that are invisible to the human eye. Cut out the higher brain functions of the frontal cortex and you have an instant lobotomy.

I feel like the clear reason that I’ve bending is so common is that 99.9% of water benders live in places that are extremely cold and snowy/icy to the point that they make all their buildings are made of ice and snow. It’s arguable that snow/ice is more common than water

For icebending, also notable is that most waterbenders live on the pole. They are by their homeplace as experienced with icebending as they are with waterbending. The first waterbending we see in the series is Katara bending a bit of water to catch a fish. The second is to break apart an iceberg. The diversity is there from the beginning. The swamppeople don't have this advantage, but I don't recall them ever icebending. What do you guys think about this?

Really really good point! The creators have confirmed that the ability to bend is associated with (at least in part) your upbringing and environment, so the diversity is there people they have adapted to it. It's curious to wonder what waterbending would have been like if the dominant culture was that of swampbending. That said, we do see swampbenders bend ice in the Day of Black Sun Part 1. ~ Tim

Remember that Iroh only discovered lightning redirection from studying waterbenders. He was still within his element, but the technique was completely different from any form of firebending. It's possible that alternative bending styles are all about thinking outside the box and using techniques vastly different from traditional bending of that element. Perhaps glass has too fluid of a structure for traditional earthbending techniques, and certainly from crystal and metalbending, so a technique more akin to watebending would be required. Perhaps airbenders could manipulate the breath within their bodies to enhance their physical abilities and endurance if they were to focus on their metabolism like firebenders do (looking at some of Aang's acrobatics, he very well might). Also, similarly to how metalbending was taught and passed down, given the arctic climate of the water tribes, it's entirely possible that when icebending was first discovered it was simply so useful that it was taught to the point of being ubiquitous, while it may not actually be inherently easier than plantbending which, although incredibly useful for swamp-dwellers, is basically not even an option in the ice caps. Edit: Upon reading the comments, I'm going to add that if an airbender were to study ripples in water and try to apply it to bending they probably could develop soundbending, and that would be rad as heck.

Blood Bending is an Avatar rabbit hole. It makes me wonder if there could be such a thing as bone bending. Bone is collagen but 70% of it is actually mineral in nature. Do minerals count as something that could be manipulated by an Earth bender? The crust of the Earth is 90% minerals so I would say yes. Also Fire benders can manipulate lightning. Lightning is pretty much a really strong electrical pulse. Does this mean they could manipulate the electrical impulses in your brain, or muscles? How about air benders bending the air in your lungs? Wow, that question sounds like it shouldn't make sense but it does. My point is, when you start looking at the implications of blood bending, all bending gets pretty dark pretty quick.

I would think if they really tried earth benders could definitely bend bone. Toph explained when she first learned metal bending that she figured it out because of the “minerals in the metal.” She saw the minerals with her mind’s eye and bent the metal. So theoretically the same could be done for bone if they sat there for long enough trying (especially if they were taught by badger moles)

fire benders don't control the lighting the can create it and redirect it (trough there bodies) thats all, I believe. The air in the lungs thing was used in LOK that one dude removed the air out of the earth kingdome queen. It should be noted that Lightning was more of a rare skill because of how the secrets were kept by the royal family and the fact that a screw up is dangerous rather than it being difficult for being so far... Metal Bending seems to actually be hard for tons of people to do on the other hand... Fire and lightning are just naturally more dangerous among bending arts... dangerous for those around and the user itself... Also, you forget that many earth benders might not even know that glass is sand or they might not even think about bending it since it's so fragile and that kinda goes against the very philosophy of Earth Bending...

Not knowing glass is sand would just be ignorance on their part. Glass exists in the Avatar universe, and it’s not the naturally occurring type, so it stands to reason that (just like reality) the people who made it obviously know how it was made and spread that knowledge, since there’s no real reason for it to be a secret.

@@jahovah2979 Avatar wiki Sandbending is an alternate earthbending style that has been adapted for use in the Si Wong Desert by the people that live there. They move quickly in the desert on specialized wooden sailers that are propelled by bending miniature, localized sandstorms behind their sails. Because sand is sediment which travels in flows, their style resembles air and waterbending more than earthbending. It is implied that most, if not all, earthbenders are capable of easily bending sand, but because of the loose shifty nature of sand it is not an easy transition for the average earthbender. The sandbenders of the desert are especially proficient with it due to their particular habitat.[18]

@@topsyturvy1097 Amon taking away people's bending is very interesting, because depending on how exactly it is done could give insight into manipulating bending as a whole. If he just eliminated it from the person's spirit or body, then the Avatar literally gave it back. The Avatar can also take away bending which is the same sense as Amon, so does that mean an even more skilled bloodbender can give bending? And if by "taking" bending he just blocked the ability from being used like what chi blockers can do temporarily, then that means he should be able to unblock it. So then does that mean everyone has an ability to bend, but some just can't unblock it? If so then a skilled bloodbender can unblock anybody's bending, even if they haven't had it before. This could work nicely with the air nation resurgence because it could mean that harmonic convergence simply unblocked all of those people's bending.

"The greatest illusion of this world is the illusion of separation. Things you think are separate and different are actually one and the same... Even the separation of the four elements is an illusion. If you open your mind, you will see that all the elements are one. Four parts of the same whole." @ultimatedragon4281
@ultimatedragon4281 5 жыл бұрын
I thought something similar to that before. Something like people's ability to bend having it's source on the energy bending... Before the Wan's episodes in the Legend of Korra totally blow it away. If they had kept the lion turtles granting just energy bending AND explained that, as time passed, people started to lean how to use the energy within themselves to bend elements and the limitations were more connected with your personality and connection with the spiritual side (making the Avatar able to bend all four elements BECAUSE of the spiritual side of the Avatar) then it would make some sense. However, somethings would NEED to be different to this work... For instance, take the fact that benders seem to be born with that ability (in the sense that, if you weren't born with bending capabiities, it is a waste of time to try bend), then I am not sure if it could actually work on Avatar's lore as we know it.

For glass, in order for it to be malleable, it would have to be re-heated. Certain metals can be worked cold. Metals are heated and annealed in order to be made more workable, but that's a matter of relaxing the crystaline structure of the metal. For instance, when steel is heated to between 1450-1500°F (788-843°C) it changes from ferrite to austenite, and then when quenched, it changes from austenite to martinsite. Fresh quenched carbon steel is as brittle as glass, and so must be tempered by re-heating (to 400-500F/200-260 C), relaxing the structure a bit to make it more durable. For copper or brass or bronze, when heated and quenched, they get softer, not harder. The way to harden it is by working it, compressing the structure. Overwork it, and it starts to tear, or even crumble. That's all the impurities stacking up and not being held in place any more. Kinda like pressing gravel out of play dough. Now, if you're a bender that can manipulate metal on the particulate level, theoretically you could just arrange the impurities in whatever way you wanted, making it ductile and malleable, or tough and unyielding. whether that act of manipulation generates heat, or if heat is needed beforehand I don't know. You could potentially do the same with glass, but it would be interesting, seeing as how glass doesn't have a cold working state as far as I know. It would likely be like this glowing red taffy substance being manipulated into shape. And if used in combat? That would be some nasty stuff... It has the potential to stuck as it burns, like napalm... Ouch...

compared to water, I think earth just progresses slower in the terms of bending transmutated materials. I mean, water can easily be bent on pure water, ice, vapour, liquids, mud... while earth took a leap just to bend sand, a bigger leap to bend metals, a massive leap just to bend lava, which is just molten earth, so I can imagine it would take a massive amount of time for earthbenders to consider glass, which is also a very rare element in avatar since we only saw glass in industrial level, with all buildings in modern cities like Republic city still having paper windows. We would not only need earthbenders to study it, but also glass to be more numerous around'em to be considered worth the problem. Plus, there is one thing: would be probably much easier for a "glassbender" to bend pre-existing glass than turn sand into glass in the spot.
@MrKlausbaudelaire
@MrKlausbaudelaire 6 жыл бұрын
Also, there is the nature of the bender. Waterbenders are imaginative and flow with the easiest path, while earthbenders are grounded in their mindset, though and hard-headed, so they seem to be the more "conservative" benders. The 4 elements can kinda fit inside that political compass with water and airbenders being more liberals while earth and firebenders being more conservative.

It would make production very much easier I think... Remember how in LoK thee were power plants powered by lightning benders? I think it's the same here. Imagine how easy making bottles and cups of glass and other likewise stuff would be, if you could bend it into the shape you need it to be... I mean the universe of Avatar is now coming to an age where things like this matter, not sheer defensive or offensive power. An age of technology and production, kapitalism you could even say. So this is a point to look at as well. I don't think though, that bending the cooled down form would be really common, as it shatters way to fast to be good bending material. I think not many would bother trying to bend it once it is cooled down... I mean it would take lots of concentration not to break it, but once you perfected this you can make use of this bending ability while building houses - windows, hehe- and stuff like this. It is more of an economic bending style, then an actually defending or attacking one. Well except if you are using obsidian, 'cause that one is not that easy to break. Ah and with the blocking thing - don't forget that you can attack from behind without someone noticing you and some people in the Avatar universe are nonbenders, so...

I like how you mention it is an artisan skill. It might just be that it is too time consuming for use in battle. There isn't a lot of glass laying around in the world, so making your own glass shard on the fly from some rock might just not be practical. Like when they crystal bend, they are using crystals that happen to be around, their not making crystal from scratch. In fact, the same is true for metal bending, it wasn't until metal commonly appeared all over before it was practical for combat. I am thinking glass bending is like that. You probably can't make glass on the fly but bending glass that already exists is likely possible. If there ever becomes a large source of glass then glass bending might appear.

This is a really cool video, thanks for making it! I think with glass bending it would be interesting to see how the movements required to bend it would change (the way we see that Bolin needs to use more fluid moves akin to waterbending when he's lavabending) because glass is really weirddd, like, you could look at it as a supercooled liquid so maybe the same rule of more fluid movements would apply to bending glass

Sure, it may have “rock” in the name, but rock candy is still basically just sugar and dye. Is it because of the crystalline structure of sugar? With this in mind, does that mean earth benders can bend other foods?

The reason I think water bending can switch states is because water bending relies on the push and pull of water (as states in the show). There's an idea of movement within the bending itself that ice to water, and water to ice, becomes a part of. It's the fluidity of water that they can bend, rather than changing temperatures. Just a thought. :P Great video!

One very cool thing is the visual possibility: glass is technically a very dense and viscous liquid so the glassbender could manipulate glass "mud", making it look like a bit similar to waterbending with the wave-like appearance only for the glass to fully "solidify" back once the bending is over

For me this explanation "Platinum is too refined and has no traces of earth anymore." is just something added by the authors to keep a balance in power, to give metal-benders a limitation. Because, if you follow this path and look at all you find in a pile of dirt, you will come to the question: "WHAT is earth? And what's not?" Platinum as well as every other metal, is earth, just like the guru said "a purified form of earth". So, when we come to glass, I think it would be interesting to look at the possible usages. Solid: a brittle club/ball/blade/arrow/hook etc. Liquid: a badass torture device (and possibly a device for creating artistic burning scars^^)

Platinum is on the periodic table, iron is too. So why can earth benders bend iron but not platinum
@Lilitha11
@Lilitha11 6 жыл бұрын
Someone did mention else where that they might actually be bending carbon. Which is why they can bend carbonite rocks, and iron(if it is something like pig iron which has higher carbon content) but they have more difficulty bending more purified and refined metals and even iron might become impossible to bend if it was pure. They also mentioned how that might be extremely broken, if you can bend anything with carbon in it, including flesh bending people. The system starts breaking down if you look at things like that though. It might be a more 'spiritual' thing, since they live in a spiritual world. It might be that you can bend virtually anything, as long as the spirits grow used to it. So naturally spirits are drawn to natural sources of 'earth' being just the ground, but then as people advance technologically and create more metal things, spirits grow accustomed to viewing metal as earth and over time bending works better for that. So the rules actually change as time goes on. What might be impossible at one time is common later on as humans create more of it.

im seeing lots of comments about how glass bending would be pointless compared to lava and normal earth bending, but you should think circumstantial. if an earth bender is in a room with no earth, but a massive window, they could glass bend that window into sharp cones or even change their shape into swords. the use of most bending techniques are circumstantial.

I'm just curious... would you rather a new Avatar series set after Korra, or Before Aang? (Open question. Feel free to discuss.) Personally, I kinda would rather go back to a more simple time, before Aang. I'd love to see the world before the Fire Nation attack, where Airbenders roam free and have adventures. Where the nations are all relatively friendly. I do want to see what happens after Korra... but I just feel like the world would get too advanced and not as interesting. Korra had the perfect level of advancement for me, just enough technology and bending to remain very interesting. You wanted to learn more about the world and how bending was involved in day to day lives of more modern people. But I really really want to see what the world was like before Aang.. maybe even a Kyoshi series!

A lot of Avatar's world can be traced to actual historic times in Japan and China from the Industrial Revolution to WWII. Going backwards to feudal times would allow you to do a phenomenal series, perhaps using China's Three Kingdoms war for the Earth Kingdom which eventually leads to the newly crowned Earth King converting the Dai Li into a spy network for would be upstart rivals but still calling them a cultural authority to pass under the Avatar's view. Meanwhile the Fire Nation doesn't exist. There's just a bunch of small kingdoms. I could imagine that these kingdoms willingly give slowly more and more power to a single one who controls the strongest fire benders to control the peasant protests caused by lack of food. This story ends by the other lords willingly but begrudgingly crowning the first Fire Lord, who ushers in an era of prosperity by using his resources to build a trade empire across the world's seas. The other nations it's harder to say what to do with since they seem mostly unchanged in AtLA from what they likely were thousands of years ago. Also I don't know what the Avatar's role would be, but the Avatar implicated in the Three Kingdom's War sounds very cool.

Measurement standards aren't "really, really stupid" (2 reallys? Really?) when talking about temperature. Celsius is only easier when talking about freezing and boiling water. That's it. When dealing with extreme temps, one crazy high number is no different than any other, as long as you are consistent what scale you measure with. (I think scientists are starting to use Kelvin more, anyway) I prefer to use F when dealing with reasonable measures like air and cooking, because it's a much wider span. You, ironically, can be more *accurate* when your scale is bigger. A couple ticks of air temp difference in C is way more significant *inside* than in F. When cooking, more than a 5° diff(which many ovens use as min change value) can make or break your food item. 5°C is a much bigger difference, when cooking! Sorry about the length(Giggity!) of this, but temperature is a hot button(pun intended) to me as consistency is the important thing!

What I find interesting about "the limits of bending" is that I initially expected only materials from the Avatar planet itself to be bendable, but on refreshing my memory, Toph has no issue in bending a nickel-iron meteorite, and the Metal Clan specified that such meteorites are very easy to bend and used as training materials. It really begs the question of what bending might look like in a space-age Avatar World... ...which I really hope we see down the road, because what Varrick did in weaponising the spirit vines could be EASILY reapplied as a propulsion system for rocketry - the power density per vine is immense!
