As someone who's terrified of heights now I'd say you did one hell of a job of overcoming and getting what needed done, done. I never used to be afraid of heights but when I was younger I did a few years as a Trusser on apartment buildings that were going up in my area. The Trusser is just like it sounds the guy who walks the top plates of the second story outside walls of a new building putting the end of the trusses where they belong and then laying the plywood sheets of the roof. It was only stick building, wood frame, but it was still close to 45 feet off the ground. After the third time I was knocked off by either the wind or careless crane operator/coworkers I was done. I literally couldn't force myself to climb up onto the top plate of the wall or even the plywood sheet of the roof. I mean I could try but my body wouldn't physically respond to be able to do it. Some may see that as being cowardly but I am no coward and have faced things most would run from in my life but going up that mast is something I do not think I could do. Yeesh sorry for the long story that has nothing to do with your's really but I just wanted you to know that when I say job well done on that maybe you will understand just how much I mean that. Sorry to see you took a hit as so many others have in that area and from what I've read and watched it's always been an issue for Yacht'ies there. I've even seen where the locals brag about it being the lightning capitol of the world, of course the entire coast line and pretty much all islands in that area make that claim from what I've seen. I'm sure it's been said but Sailing Dauntless, another yachting channel here on KZbin, has looked into Lightning Protection a lot. They have bought and are installing something they use in big industry to protect things like High Power Towers, Radio and Cellphone Towers, Power Plants and other installations, basically anything you don't want being hit by lightning. It's pretty pricey but the company that makes them for all the big names in power and communication have the real world data to show it does in fact work. Anyway sorry for the book of a comment and please know that I wish nothing but the best for you two. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

Spot on nice read and thanks. Dont think anuone has succeeded in lightning proofing a yacht. That bolt switched on the displays with breakers off!! Voltage so high it just jumps everything..

Good to see that you and Kerry are doing well after the lightning strike. Kerry is a star for all her help in the daunting task that lay ahead of you both. Well done Trev as that's not really a task for a 61+ year old.

Hi there Trev, just a thought whenever we used bosuns chairs in construction on scaffolding we always had a clip on secondary safety line (2.0 mtr lanyard) in case the main lifting line parted. Like at the top of the mast, just a quick clip onto those grab rails back to your harness. A positive connection to something solid remote from the chair rig takes the panic out of dangling precariously. Helps loosen up the old sphincter knowing if something happens you can only drop a metre or so. Peace of mind for both of you, BTW you would be totally lost without Kerri, what a deckhand she is! you're a lucky man. Cheers for the vids and stay safe mate.

Should have used another halyard as a safety but with only two hands.. Actually had a safety harness on shoulders and also clipped onto main halyard. Shit if main halyard breaks you in big trouble. Next time take a safety up too. Kerry is a trooper for sure!

I have been seeing the total need for Cruisers to get 2 way Headsets to communicate instead of screaming at one another. It is a terrific way to stay calm. The screaming at one's partner just raises the heartbeat when not necessary. Just a suggestion.

There are several YT cruises that use headsets.

Hey mate I think you got lucky compared to Parlay! Is there anything that really works when it comes to avoiding damage done from a lightning strike? Or is it just luck👍
@oceanadventures365 Жыл бұрын
Just luck nothing one can do. We got off lightly for sure poor Parlay have had two direct hits and thats catastrophic!

@@oceanadventures365 it's expensive but I think it's luck! Ive seen people try it all and lighting is too unpredictable. Cheers 👍

Maybe you could have a set of connectors for everything that goes up the mast that you could connect to ground at the base of the mast.
@oceanadventures365 Жыл бұрын
There is nothing one can do as the voltage is off the planet. The electricity bypasses breakers and any switchgear...
