We take a look at the differences between Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic CC. These were both launched at Adobe Max 2017 in Las Vegas. Adobe Lightroom Classic CC is the stand alone photo editing software that does everything locally. Adobe Lightroom CC 2017 is a cross platform photo editing software that works on your computer Lightroom Tablet and Lightroom Mobile.
Here I discuss the differences and the benefits of each.

I don't really see why anybody would prefer the new Lightroom CC. What's with the obsession to upload all files in the cloud? What about privacy? (After all the hacks I am not terribly confident of Adobe's security.) And in what world do Adobe managers live when they've apparently never had an outage of their internet connection or couldn't access the internet because they were moving and the new connection wasn't ready yet? Personally I also don't really see the need to edit photos with Lightroom on a smartphone. Screen is tiny, fingers are big, why not do it properly on the desktop? Your needs may vary, but for me the mobile app was always a solution to a problem I've never had. And now I am a bit concerned that this is the first step by Adobe to kill off the desktop version.
@clearlyed
@clearlyed 7 жыл бұрын
I kind of agree with you. that there will be challenges with internet connections etc. but I also understand the need for mobile editing and editing accross multiple devices. but I think they have different purposes. I might use both, Lightroom Classic for most of my work especially professional then Lightroom CC for any travel photography so I can edit as I go. Its definitely an interesting move.
@alrafter
@alrafter 7 жыл бұрын
A professional might have the need to edit on the go but not most amateur photographers. Why would anyone on holiday or out for the day want to edit straight away? They surely have better things to do than mess with photos. The most pleasure that I get is looking at an editing when I get home.

For me, it's all about instagram. Because I can't post to instagram from a computer, I currently edit all of my photos on my computer, then upload to google drive, and then download to my phone to post to instagram. I manage not only my own instagram account, but also the accounts of several models. I post between 15 and 20 photos per day every day, 7 days per week. The new LightroomCC offers relief to some of those workflow hurdles, but after using it for a couple hours yesterday I don't believe it's ready for prime-time use yet. I still ended up using Lightroom Classic to develop the images. The mobile version of Lightroom is really substandard as well. In the future, I look forward to fully functioning versions of LrCC. But for now, i'll still be jumping those hurdles.
@Juergen_Weginger

This is what I also concerned about that they kill the classic version. So you have to pay monthly for Lightroom and, i guess, a huge amount of money for online memory space for your archive. Currently I would need around 6 TB.
@Juergen_Weginger
@Juergen_Weginger 7 жыл бұрын
I don´t really see a lot of professionals who would need to edit on the go. Landscape photographers, portrait photographers, fashion, travel and so on they all need a high end editing of their images and not on an Ipad with the wrong color. On a two week trip I take over 4000 images, when the heck should I upload the images into the cloud when I`m on a remote destination like in Alaska or Iceland. I select and edit at home, on my computer and on my harddrive.

Thank you so much for this!!! I am just beginning my journey in Photography and I was overwhelmed with the BS and the insane amount that Lightroom CC pushed you to spend stupid amounts of money to store your files. I think it is a money grab as everyone knows RAW files are massive and take a massive amount of storage. You are right when you say that it has been put to market before it was ready and I swear they must have someone that used to work at Nintendo trying to screw the public every which way with add on after add on and storage increase after storage increase! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Thankfully I saw the forest for the trees (so to speak) and canceled with it straight away and after watching this will be re calibrating with Lightroom Classic. Thank you for that your awesome and honest which I love!🙏🏻😍👍🏻

It really bugs me that the photographer's plan (that includes Photoshop) now costs almost three times what it was originally. Fortunately I signed up when it was a package deal with PS and LR together so I get both and the new version of LRcc at the original price. They will lose a "paying" customer in me if that changes - I'll go back to yo-ho-ho-ing the software.

Ed, best video I have ever seen. Adobe comes out with smoke and mirrors and tries to not explain it in detail. Which you did. Awesome, thank you. One additional limit to Lightroom CC is that I am always traveling, and sometimes on a plane without internet-and that would make all my files inaccessible.

You're spot on. Even as a daily street shooter, I can't be bothered to wait for say 500mbtof photos to sync. I could simply pop those on a drive, or local, or both. That's what smart previews are for. Also side note, but I wonder if we'll be watching this in 10 years referring to CC as Classic Cloud.

I love CC and already use the mobile version and I am a high volume wedding photographer. I just upload one wedding at a time. I don't need to keep all my wedding photos in the cloud. So the notion you would have to purchase endless amount of drive space is silly. The mobile or CC version is SO MUCH faster than even the now "classic" version that it is worth the transfer to the cloud. Not only that to be able to be mobile and edit on the go is a HUGE advantage for me. I was getting so sick of being tethered to a desk. So if the main hang up is drive space so you can leave every image you take in the cloud, you are missing out on a much easier (and more fun if you have an iPad pro and apple pen) way to edit. I would recommend to people to give it an honest try, I think you will find it to be a better way to edit.

Totally agree 5 is sufficient for the Hobby Photographer. $10/month is too much! I personally find the cloud SLOW and not safe. I tried saving files while traveling and took forever. I think I rather work on my I7 and 4T storage it is more that safe and if it goes down well I guilty. Not some multinational Hacker.

Lightroom CC is also included with the Classic subscription (although only 20GB of storage). You can upload a few files you're working on and have access to them anywhere (work, home, mobile). I just upgraded to 1TB of storage for $15 a month, which includes the 1TB storage, Classic, PS, and CC. To me, that's a good deal for backing up my collection and if I want to, I can edit them wherever. I can understand it's no good for companies, but for individuals, I think it is. Edit: I don't think it's an either/or. For me it's a combination of both and it's a good deal for all that you get. $15 a month for LR Classic CC, LR CC, PS, and a bunch of others, plus the 1TB storage.

My full time gig is as a software engineer. Doing that for the last 20 years has pretty much taught me that when you have two products that do the same thing, eventually one of them gets killed. Usually it's whatever is labeled as classic or legacy. So that has me wondering if I should start looking at Capture 1 and Affinity Photo (or some other replacements).

Great explanation. There's no way I'd ever use the new version even if storage was free. I prefer local storage when on the road...mobile plans are far too expensive. Apart from that I already have offsite backup in place (at a cost and includes more than just photo/video)...I don't need two cloud storages thanks.

exactly. most series shooters have there system and cloud storage gets expensive over time. I see its merits but right now Lightroom CC is going to be too pricey for pros to really take it seriously. Would you recommend having your Lightroom Classic library duplicated on CC so it can be stored on the cloud? I definitely will continue using Classic as opposed to CC for overall/editing purposes but am wondering if it is worth it just to have it to take advantage of the storage opportunity (I don't have enough content to need to pay for anything as of yet). And could it also be used as a route to access your Lightroom Classic photos from your mobile?

Don’t know if this was brought up in the comments but you didn’t quite go into about Lightroom sync in LR Classic. You touched on it with the collections comment, but it is possible to use Sync on LR classic with the Lightroom CC app on your phone or tablet. That way you can do some of your photos to go and make basic edits. Also, you can take photos with the Lightroom CC app on your phone and use sync with LR classic, for say, using the GPS location to add to the photos you took with DSLR camera. Though LR sync can be a little tricky but I use it mostly for the GPS info.

As I am just an amateur and take about 300 photos a year 120 dollars a year means every 3 photos I take costs a dollar making it far too expensive. I currently have the perpetual licence for version 6 and will have to stick with that. I shall eventually say goodbye to Adobe and look for something else. Can anyone recommend anything?
@clearlyed

well maybe Lightroom CC will be great for you as it will allow you to edit on different devices and you get 20gb included for the $20. this way you may be more inclined to take more photos. sounds like Lightroom CC might be perfect for you. Take a look at On1 they have some pretty great photo editing applications.

Thanks to you and Ed for recommending On 1. I have looked at various videos and this seems to be the best option as either a replacement or a plug in for Lightroom. If as a plug in it could possibly replace Nik which I currently use with Lightroom 6. I intend to give the trial version a go as I have no intention of hiring software for photo processing.

Lightroom CC is useless as it is now, as you pointed out too. Also, "renting" by paying a monthly subscription for CC or classic doesn't make sense at all to 99% of photographers who only edit 10 shots a month as amateurs.

Your Lr story misses some features: Classic includes Photoshop, CC includes the first TB of storage. There are 3 flavours out: Classic for +-10$/m (same as before+Lr CC but only 20GB of cloud) / Lr CC and 1TB of storage for +-10$/m / Combined plans with 1TB of storage: +-20$/m -- prices for additional storage have been announced.

you actually made this understandable... i was at photoexpo and Adobe spent a lot of time touting (with experts giving seminars on LR CC. i was definitely intrigued but didn't understand the price structure at all, and the "experts" that had to man the info table weren't too good at explaining it either. (there are two different packages one with 200 GB, and the other with 1T. Also, I just want LR, i don't want photoshop! But I think they are pushing CC so much because everyone has a phone and they see THAT as the growth market. ofcourse the people at Photoexpo all are photographers WITH cameras so they weren't as gung-ho as the seminar leaders that were cheery and upbeat about CC. Here is my question! Have they changed anything in the year since you did this video and are you still in the mode of encouraging Classic because their cloud storage is just TOO DAMN HIGH!

You have completely voiced my own thoughts on this and I am so happy that I decided to stay with lightroom classic, the cloud storage costs being the deciding factor, the other little things like the loss of some functionality at the moment, I believe are issues which will eventually be sorted. I am not even a professional photographer, but very keen about my hobby, I am very happy that classic is a lot faster, I notice a difference in the way that things work, with future updates, I think classic should stay far enough ahead of the game, to make it the go to application for everyone, as you said if they suddenly start to charge a fee of $5 for 1 TB and then $1 there after I am in, but I have a feeling that will be a cold day in a hot place, very much look forward to your follow up videos.

People complaining about the monthly solution are so stuck in the 2000s and have absolutely no clue about why the monthly solution is the way to go without any hesitation and is not only about the business model. Technology has evolved and having to pay every x years for a new version of a software just does not make sense at all anymore. If some companies still offer other solution is because they either 1. don't have the technology 2. are kind enough to please people stuck in the past. If you think the point 2 will last, forget about it. And for all the haters who will come and comment "buhuhu this is bullshit this is just about making money" I reiterate: this is not only about a business model. This is about technology in the first place. If it was not the case then companies would have started doing in in the 90s already. If you don't get it, at least deal with it, you have no choice (not talking about the morons who are using these tools for business purposes but cracking the softwares).

Storage is one issue, but what about upload/download speed? How long does it take to transfer a set of files to and from the cloud? Current work flow would be a quick cull in camera, then upload shots to a lightroom catalogue for first review. Move through images, tagging the shots for first edit. Then, depending on client, share small versions for second review, followed by full edit of the final selection. How does the new Lightroom CC Change this? There is now an upload that takes place before the first review. Then all of the downloads during editing (It would make sense for LR to download a local copy for editing and then upload the edit sequence, rather than upload the full edited image). Then sharing a collection with a client. This may be possile direct from the cloud, but may require an local export so that images can be emailed, messaged or shared. Then its final editing (more downloads) and then a final export to send to printer/website/client/social media. Lots of data traffic there. How long does each download take, and what is the cost of all that traffic? In the office, we get 100MB/s to the net, and some countries have 1000MB/s, but the cloud service may be hosted in another country. You may have fast access to the net, but that does not guarantee fast access to the cloud service. That adds time. If you are office based ... there is minimal gain for the cost of slowing your workflow. What about in the field? Well, here, cloud storage is helpful .. .buuut .... that assumes that you have coverage, and access to 4G is basically nowhere outside major cities and remote mine sites. (4G near iron ore, gold mines and gas plants is a thing down here!) Then there is the cost of all that data traffic. Down here in Oztralia, 1000GB of traffic in the office costs me $80 per month or "unlimited" for $99 per month. For a SIM card in a phone or tablet, $99 per month gets me only 30GB of traffic (that's up and down added together - total traffic) So if you generate more than 360GB of images per year then you are exceeding your mobile data cap, and that does not include emails, music web surfing etc. I cant see the benefit of slowing down workflow in the office or adding ridiculous costs in the field. I don't think the infrastructure is there to support what Lightroom CC could be. Maybe it's different in the good ol' US of A, but here, while Lightroom CC sounds great in principle ... it seems ahead if its time for the currently available infrastructure.
