I have always said that Lightroom is photography and Photoshop is art. With Lightroom you can make minor adjustments that over all dramatically enhance your photos but it is still just a capture of the moment. With Photoshop you can create an image that only exists in your mind. I was once shown an image of a child standing by a stream in the forest - a beautiful image - then the creator told me that the photo was of a child standing by a tree. Again, it was a great image but was it a photo?

The more you use Lightroom & Photoshop the less you use them. In the beginnings you take what photos you have and fix them. On the photos you thin yourself out and clone out your former companion. Later on, after gaining experience, you learn the real trick of the applications. You create already excellent photos and instead of having to fix them you perfect them with only the necessary limited enhancements. Working with your later photos are so much more satisfying!

Sorry, but I can't get behind paying a monthly subscription for a damn program. It should be a one-time-only fee. 😠
@KentSpain857 жыл бұрын
I agree. I find companies nowadays are really trying to hook us on monthly subscriptions. Before you know it you're paying tons a month for the little things: -adobe -netflix -amazon -spotify -blah blah blah That's a huge amount of money, and guess what, you don't own ANYTHING - you're only renting the right to use / see / listen to it. So if you pay for LR for 3 years (10 bucks a month x 36 months), that's 360 bucks and at the end if you stop paying for it, you are out the software. What's the deal? Well... If you're a professional or very dedicated amateur, then it's fine, 10 bucks isn't a lot every month. But if you're someone who goes out to photograph once a month or every few months because it's just a regular hobby, paying for subscriptions is just too much.
@GiuseppePipia7 жыл бұрын
Well you didn't "own" ANYTHING neither when you paid a one-time-only fee. It was still licensed to you for an unlimited time, whether a software, a song, a movie, or even a book! You only paid a license. But I do agree with you that the subscription model is way more too much money than when it was a one-time-only payment. Because also "pro's" do not update their equipment as often as many think they do. For example I've seen many "pro's" in Italy still using cameras from 7 years ago, so I assume that they also did not update their softwares just so often, and that makes sense. In fact you don't need the latest software at each iteration, but you can skip one or even two iterations. Thus getting more bang for the buck spent in advance.
@smokey2677 жыл бұрын
Actually no it works out much cheaper now if you consider the actual prices of CS4, CS5, and CS6. Each one cost around $1000 for the extended version and new versions were released around 2 years later. This works out at an average of $42.00 per month just for Photoshop with no update 2 to the new version 2 years later. Considering the updates it's much cheaper now.
@GiuseppePipia7 жыл бұрын
It depends on where you are. In Italy, where I live, the subscription model costs 12.19 euros/month, that is 13.64 dollars/month. That ends up costing 163.6 dollars/year. In 30 years, a minimum activity life-span, that would end up being: 4907 dollars. Now, you'd agree with me, that if you're an amateur, or even a low end professional, one that doesn't *need* the latest and the greatest, and that would upgrade his softwares, especially Photoshop, once every 10 years, with the upgrades actually not costing the full price (I recall being 50% for Lightroom, which is all you mostly need for that level), it would have cost you much much less paying a one-time-fee with the ability to use the software without a mandatory internet connection for months!
@smokey2677 жыл бұрын
Giuseppe Pipia if you upgrade once every 5 years which is far more reasonable, even with the 50% Discount it works out to be $25 per month. Still costs more than PS and LR combined (ignoring updates) in most countries. There is a tiny minority of people that are ending up in a slightly worse off but it's unreasonable to try and accommodate absolutely everyone.

A way I keep things organised with just Photoshop is to put everything in folders by date, and then date folders in events, by date again. Example: 2017_04_Germany 2017_04_14 2017_04_15 2017_04_16 Then I scroll through the pics in finder's Cover Flow, which quickly lets you see a preview of pictures. Then I find the good ones one at a time, open in PS Raw, click "Done". This creates an xmp-file with the same file name, which lets me know I have it tagged for editing (so I can edit in bulk later by selecting all Raw-files with an accompanying xmp-file). When I finish editing, there will be an accompanying jpg-file with the same file name. I like keeping xmp-files, so that any future PS versions across different computers will preserve the edits. This makes one's photo library nice and future proof. Or at least, that is my experience.

Good review of LR and PS by Tony for the casual photographers. The casual photographers should also consider some of the newer applications such as ON1RAW and Luminar. They are not as complete functionally, but they are just getting started and may provide all that the casual photographer needs. The casual can grow with the applications. Neither is a subscription application.

Or look at it this way: If you are new you get $600 Photoshop, plus $150 LightRoom, both for $10.00, plus you receive free automatic updates. The full retail of both was about $750, which is equal to 75 months, or 6 years, plus the old 18 month update cost of around $150 or so. It's almost better to just pay monthly.

I use both, but have been using Photoshop for about 16 years now. For most, yes, Lightroom is the way to go ...but when you're someone like me who takes photos and then does compositing with them, Photoshop is the best choice. With Adobe CC photographers package you don't need to pick one or the other. I use both, for some work you need photoshop but for the majority of editing I use Lightroom. Photoshop is a must-have, of course, but as far as I can see the software that came with my D7100 does just about everything -- exposure, histogram check, focus checking, contrast, sharpness, cropping, RAW conversion, etc. -- most people would use Lightroom for (and with the same system of sliders as in Lightroom).
@jordanking7711 Жыл бұрын
For me you should use both and learn both. As Tony said, if you are organizing your photos and basic edits, use Lightroom first. But when you hit a brick wall (so to speak) and want to do things that Lightroom can't do in terms of enhancing your photo, send it to Photoshop. If you're going to be doing heavy graphics work and compositing though, well that's a given and you can only do that in Photoshop.

Hey Tony great vid's but I really don't like the way you've put Photoshop vs Lightroom as if they compete with one another. Lightroom is a workflow management tool designed to develop pictures and carry out global changes to pictures mainly. Photoshop is a picture manipulation tool. They are both designed for different purposes. I know there's overlap but in most instances these products are for different purposes. Your video seems to suggest they are not and you advance onto photoshop from lightroom. I don't mean to criticise but you happen to be a person that is very specific on detail so I thought I'd point this fact out about lightroom and photoshop being for different purposes. Anyway keep up the good work!!!

I know some hate the subscription model but even in the cash strapped UK it works out as about equal to a coffee & a snack a month. Twice I held back and then had to update due to upgrades that meant a new camera I bought was not covered by the system I had - it's not ideal but it can also be tax deductible for a pro.

I used to use Aperture by Apple on my Mac. I have read and heard that it was comparable to Lightroom. It had a library feature, as well as some editing things, although there was no brushes or anything like that. When they quit supporting Aperture, I was somewhat upset. I cannot afford to pay for the Adobe suite or even a monthly charge of Lightroom. I have since purchased Affinity Photo, which many say is slower than photoshop, but it was only $40 when it first came out (they had an introductory deal going) so it was well worth it. It doesn't have any kind of library function, but I have altered my workflow to accommodate that fact. I now use Apple's Photos (not great) as a library and Affinity Photo as my editor.Affinity does many of the things most folks will do on photoshop I think. It's not as powerful by a long shot, but it has focus stacking, stacking, HDR merging, panorama stitching, and uses layers so it is non destructive. It has brushes and content aware healing and inpainting features. You can create composites and tone map with Affinity Photo. It also does the regular photo editing things Aperture used to do for me in a much better way than Aperture ever did. Overall, I am very happy with it. I guess if I ever turn pro, I can maybe afford to use Photoshop, but in the mean time, I will stick with something I own and don't have to pay to play with anymore... I know there are pros and cons to both, but it's still utterly out of my league.

I was going to get adobe CC with a subscription card when it was on sale for $100. But I'm in Canada so they wouldn't let me buy it. Even though Canadians have to pay the monthly fee in USD anyway. The subscription cards are for US customers only... Which brings up another point. You CAN'T cancel it on a month by month basis. Even if you do the month to month payments, the contract is for 1 year. Not a big deal if you use it all the time but if you decide to take a break from your photo hobby or maybe switch to another program, you're still stuck paying for the remainder of the year. In the end I just continue to use LR4.4 and live without the added benefits. Another note, LR catalogs are not backwards compatible with older versions of lightroom. Learned that after transferring my entire library to the trial LR CC then tried to go back... Lost it all...

I reacted against the subscription model for all the same reasons that everybody does. What tipped me over the edge to get the CC package was that there is much more tutorial content out there for LR and PS than for anything in the freeware world. Top creatives are using CC products and teaching me how to use it. Although freeware is out there, I get more inspiration from creative people than from something being 'free'. Here in Australia it costs close enough to $15 a month. I tell myself that's one cup of coffee every ten days that I'm giving to Adobe, they can share it between their staff. :)
@indiehorse7 жыл бұрын
It seems I may be in the minority here but paying monthly is ideal for me and I'd chose to do that even if a one-off payment were an option. a) While I could have probably stretched to a one-off payment for LR, there's no way I'd have been able to afford PS in one big chunk. I get a monthly wage, so monthly expenditures work better for me, even if it means I'm paying more over the long term. b) It absolves me from having to decide whether to upgrade or not. I hate making decisions. If PS were following the traditional software version model then I probably wouldn't upgrade, or I'd at least skip a few versions, but I'd definitely have trouble trying to evaluate whether an upgrade was good value for me or not. I don't really know what features I need from PS until I need/have them. c) Adobe are great and they can take all my money. They develop great quality products and employ smart people to do clever things. Even if their developers are working on features that aren't of particular interest to me, I know they're still doing worthwhile stuff. There's no doubt having a reliable monthly income stream helps the company operate.

Hi guys. I’m relatively ‘new’ to photo processing, having renewed my hobby after many years (previously a film SLR shooter) now that I’m retired. I’m into Canon mirrorless and have downloaded the free Canon Photo Professional software for editing. Using this software is pretty easy, and I enjoy the results. HOWEVER; I’m frustrated in that I almost always get a message that my edits can not be saved to JPEG because “an error occurred” with no further explanation. I’ve reached out to Canon with no response and am thinking of deleting and then reloading the program. But; I am almost ready to bite the bullet and get the combination Lightroom + Photoshop deal and your reference books for these programs. My only question for you two is that I’ve also read that non-native processing software does not work as well with different camera systems. So; please tell me if the LRc and Ps Adobe software programs work seamlessly and well with Canon systems to set my mind at ease before I buy. Thank you for your consideration.

I'm going to avoid any subscription-based software licensing for as long as possible. It has a great place in government and organizations, but not for the average home user. I'm just a photo enthusiast who takes about 25,000 photos a year. I'm using Affinity Photo as my Photoshop replacement and it does absolutely everything I need. I'm hopeful that Affinity will also come out with a photo management software as a competition to Lightroom. I'm still using Apple Aperture 3 until it stops working. As a non-pro, I would like to use CaptureOne, but there are end-user features in Aperture (like maps based on GPS and face recognition), that my family uses. Corel also has a great option with AfterShot pro as a decent replacement, although it's still catching up with features. Unlike Lightroom, AfterShot Pro never bugs down with large photo libraries. Too bad Adobe, I like your products, but not outside of the workplace.

I personally do all organising in adobe bridge and the editing in photoshop. But I generally don't shoot big series. For an event of 100+ photos lightroom is obviously better.

I bought LR5 and CS6 in 2013. 4 years later I WISH I would have taken the $9.99 a month sub. All of the new features in LR CC and PS CC will not update to the stand alone versions and my Adobe Camera Raw is stuck at 9.5 (I think) and will also never update. Do yourselves a favor and go with the $9.99 Creative Cloud lease and stay current with all the new updates.

Photoshop has Camera Raw and Bridge doesn't it? Essentially Lightroom

I have Lightroom 6 and yet I still use Bridge and Camera Raw instead. LR sucks donkey ass. I hate it.
@TeachableDogs6 жыл бұрын
What about Bridge. I cant believe you didnt mention Bridge. I personally dont like lightroom too much. My workflow is to cull and organize in Bridge. Use camera raw and open in Photoshop for my color grading and other adjustments.

question: I got old slides, probably Agfa, from the mid 70s that I need to reprocess for a documentary> I see a lot of noise, even in bright daylight , in most if not all slides. Colour I won't change, or hardly - to keep the feel of the era. So It's about noise reduction, trying to keep as much detail as possible and most likely some sharpening. No gimmicks required/needed. What is in yr opinion the best option - Photoshop, Lightroom? I see Capture One mentioned quite often? Not to forget: I am new in digital editing. Thank you in advance.

The only problem I can see with the monthly licensing deal, is that if you ever choose to end your monthly subscription, you won't be able to use (print, edit, etc.) the files you have created thus far, unless you re-subscribe. My understanding is that once you cancel your 'subscription' your copies of Lightroom and Photoshop will no longer work shortly thereafter. Ouch! :(

Lightroom needs a native image stacking option and a faster spot healing tool like the one in PS.

Hey Tony, thanks for the summary. I've been using Bridge & Photoshop ACR rather than Lightroom because I couldn't get the LR cataloging function to work properly. The problem is my MacBook only has a very small onboard memory (ie 500MB) so I use external hard drives to keep my photos on. This seems to confuse Lightroom horribly and I have ended up losing a lot of images. Bridge is OK, but I feel like an outcast and a pariah in the tog community because I can't master Lightroom. I admit it has taken me to a dark place, ironically.

I am a professional photographer and used to also teach Photoshop to photographers. I use Photoshop and Bridge. Lightroom is a pain to use and yet you say you can't imagine anyone not using it. You are therefore not filing your images correctly. You should not need a program to look for your images and certainly NEVER ever use software to import images to you PC.. You should know where they are and then use Bridge to sort them much faster than Lightroom can. The last thing a photographer needs is for the software (lightroom) to make libraries of images in different locations on your hard drives. File everything using Explorer.... the exact opposite of what you are suggesting. I understand many people like using Lightroom, and that is their choice.....but please don't suggest it's even remotely better than Bridge, Photoshop, Camera Raw with correct filing.

Tony, do a comparison between Photoshop and Affinity Photo. It may surprise those who are unaware of it! Once Serif gives it a DAM it will them be a strong alternative to Lightroom and Photoshop. Also no monthly fee and free updates at the moment.
@thytonen7 жыл бұрын
I think the real comparison is Lightroom vs. Photoshop+Bridge ? I know photographer who uses Bridge to organize and then edits in PS.

There hasn't really been much new lately. Adobe seems to be putting most of their effort into mobile apps, which we'll be covering soon.

Tony, I am also annoyed at Adobe. I suppose if enough people are annoyed, they might revert to a less cumbersome ownership model with respect to lease; at the very least - as an option with free or low cost upgrades. I own LR 6 and just purchased Affinity Photo. I hope to reduce my level of dependence on Adobe. I understand the need for recurring income and thus the subscription.

What you are basically telling people here is: Adobe is taking you hostage here and is asking for ransom money. Go for it anyway as it's the "better choice". Yeah, that's how far we have come thsese days with software providers...

I received Digital Photo Professional 4 when I purchased my camera two years ago. Being somewhat of a cheapskate I have been using it to edit my photos. Now I am ready for the next step. Would I be able to only lease Photoshop since Photo Professional 4 appears to duplicate Light Room based on this video tutorial? Thanks for the great tutorials and books.

I use Photoscape. It's free and can do everything except for magic wand or layering editing.

So why not get the Photoshop & Premier Elements combo for $100 .. and use a free photo organizer like Sony's Playmemories? .. upgrade Elements when you think it's time for a new version.

Does Lightroom have the HDR feature? And this might be the same feature but I saw a demo with Photoshop where the photographer took several photos of a building and with Photoshop was able to combine all the photos into one and in doing so removed items within the photo that were not static. Is this feature available in Lightroom?

Why should I spend anything for Lightroom when ViewNX2 (or ViewNX-i for Mac) comes free with my Nikon camera (or can be downloaded) and seems to do everything that Lightroom does? I'm also wondering whether GIMP, which is also free, will do what Photoshop does.
@TonyAndChelsea7 жыл бұрын
If you like ViewNX, keep using it! I definitely prefer LR. GIMP can do a lot, but there's also a lot it doesn't do (like auto-align layers). But, free is free! Software isn't necessarily the best way to spend your budget.
@paulbali99986 жыл бұрын
GIMP is powerful - and the interface is friendly. there may be things it can't do that PS can; then again, there are about ten thousand things it can do that i haven't yet learned. i found it sufficient for processing my photo-based art work and getting it onto 60"x48" canvasses for a solo art show in 2014.

Since I organise my images using the far faster Photo Mechanic, I don't need the organise tool in Lightroom so prefer Photoshop as it is just a photo editor.

Thanks for this Tony, I did sign up for the monthly deal simply because at the time I couldn't run to buying both packages outright, having said that I think it's a great deal as I always have the latest version, where I do get a bit miffed is the high prices for additional packages but then I guess I have a great deal in the Lightroom/PS package so shouldn't complain too much. I signed up for Audition for £20 a month but wish they had bundled Speedgrade with it as I feel the 2 really do go together... Maybe one day... Thanks again.

Tony, what are your thoughts on ACDSEE? I am not professional but getting to a point where I need a photo manager, and am starting to shoot in RAW. The one thing I like about ACDSEE is that you do not have to import or export your photo's you access them from their folders on your hard drive. I saw your video on free alternatives, and I know you are particular to Light Room, but I would love to see a video on some of the other paid alternatives like ACDSEE and others that are being talked about in the comments

Hey! Thanks fr this, you answered everything in one go! I only have a MacBook Air, and right now (in fact for a while) I cannot afford to upgrade to a pro. My problem is the processing power of my computer... I need Lightroom, as a start like you said, and Photo shop to begin experimenting with, but I fear its just gonna be a waste if my computer ends up freaking out everything I try and do editing etc. thoughts? Thank you very much
