Lightspeed: Teen Titans Without the Teen Titans

You know the lore of a show is rich when it can do an episode where the protagonists don’t appear - and it is still compelling! When Adventure Time started doing Finn-less episodes, it blew my mind.

Yes. Though technically some shows can do that and it isn't because the lore is rich, but because their side characters are more interesting than their truly awful protagonist. 😅 This is because its good writing though.

i love adventure time, the fionna and cake spin-off blew my mind cause i didnt expect another series of adventure time to exist, i guess it never truly ends :)

A great example of this is the anime Kaguya-Sama: Love is War where supporting characters are so well defined that they can get their own arcs. Two backgrounds characters who were mainly used as gags even got their own spin-off

This episode was my first exposure of the trope "Bad Powers, Good People" as far as I can remember. I've always liked Jinx and her design but this episode opened up the idea that sometimes, villains may want a change whether it's for a selfish desire or a desire thought to be evil when they just want to be understood or loved. The idea alone of "Bad Powers, Good People" and vice versa make my brain go brrrrrr since there's creativity in using your powers in a out of the box way to aid in said goals or alignment. So to have something like "bad luck", really falls into how you see it. Seeing Kid Flash slip on water was bad luck for him but good luck for Jinx, all you need to do there is put a villain in Kid Flash's position for the trope to be effective. But I wanna briefly talk about something. Can I say Madame Rogue is fucking terrifying to me? Even after ALL these years? It was the episode of her impersonating Hot Shot that left me in such horror and dread that not only he got beat but Robin was tricked into making such a major mistake to the point where fucking up TT's communications was more good than bad so the Brotherhood cannot continue to track them so easily. So seeing Jinx stand up to her and oppose her not once in Lightspeed but for a 2nd time in the, (what I feel is a better finale for the show) second to last episode, was so great and comforting to me.

Kid flash said she was different cause he was spitting game and was likely the first time someone called her special which Jynx craved. She wanted that from Madame Rouge not romantically but professionally and didn't happen so Kid Flash won. The guy with the eyeball just has no game 16:25 lol

I like the hive kids. When they aren't being more of a semi-comedic enemy and act as their own characters, they almost feel like a classic Stephen Kingian group of unloved dumbasses. Like how most of his "bullies" would be without a psychotic leader always pushin' em around. How even in the middle of shit they're just kinda like "Why the hell am I even here?"

Yeah, I like it when shows do that. It really shows how great supporting characters can be with great writing, personality, pacing, dynamics and effort. Even one-off characters can be likable. Hell, Pokémon even had an anthology series dedicated to the supporting characters of the show called Pokémon Chronicles.
