Simon, I was photographer for a expedition in the jungle. We attempted a Portage over a waterfall, unfortunately my camera bag decided to part company. WHEN WE CAUGHT UP DAMAGE WAS DONE. THE SHOP BACK IN THE MAINLAND TRIED BUT FAILED TO RESUSCITATE.....soooooo the lens works great to start a fire...lol Hope your camera is brought back to former glory!.. May your feet be sure on the trail, your campfire warm at night...and the trail tales are true!

Finally, someone who includes camera and tripod in their camping kit. I've been trying to figure out how to keep things light, because camera gear isn't exactly small and light and not much you can do in that department, so best bet would be to go as light as possible with everything else.

Nice pack. Well organized and efficient. Smart choices in your basic survival and first aid kit. I carry the same stoves. Very good choice. I made a wind screen from a piece of aluminum flashing material, just folded up. I unfold it and it works very well. Cheap 😄

Thank you! I can be a job to keep the weight down, and sometimes a bit unnerving taking away those ‘safety’ items - I didn’t take any spare clothing on this hike for example - and risked the weather - if it had been pouring with rain, I’d have been in a different situation for sure! 👍

Hi Simon, I am always surprised how many little and big bags people take with them. Yes your stuff is more organized, but how much weight do all those little bags add to your kit? A tarp can be rolled up and kept that way using a rubber band or stretchy para-cord. Possibles pouch, great. A semi-sturdy ziplock bag would do almost the same job, is lighter, and keep it waterproof too. A sleeping bag does not need a compression bag. Instead put your sleeping bag in your backpack to fill up empty gaps in your pack. A tent does not need a little bag, like the tarp. You eliminate all these extra little bags, replace them with simpler things like stretchy para-cord, and you will save some weight.
@simonablokeinthewoods4 жыл бұрын
I see what you are saying and it would definitely make a difference to weight, but I’d never get all that gear in without compressing it into bags -also makes finding, packing and organising gear much easier - I like my gear compartmentalised and stowed in order. 👍

Thank you Simon, another great video! I used to use an MSR Micro Rocket stove, until one day a mate of mine decided to light up a candle as I was screwing the gas canister to it. The valve was open, and the gas arced to the candle and blew itself about thirty feet into the bush. I use a mini-Trangia now, with the same box stove as you, and a purple fluid...it's fondue fuel, odourless, and no smoke. Much of the gear you use is the same as mine, though yours has seen many more miles; a good thing! I love the choice of reading!!! Stay safe mate, cheers!!!

One method to avoid over-tightening boot laces is to tie a knot into your laces about 3/4 up your boot. Leave this in place, then tie to the top in the usual way. The lower section remains at the same tension each time you wear them. I like to keep the lower section relatively loose, with plenty of wriggle room.

Great idea! I’ll give that a try, thank you. 👍
