As a designer and former LEGO design manager, I am totally blown away by Angus' ability to analyze the physical world around him. This incredible attention to detail and the ability to understand *meaning* of those details for an audience are absolutely critical to make products (and movies) that have "consumer" relevance.

@@Doomishhs The teams I supervised developed the sets for the 2005 launch and onward... but these guys were *way* more competent than I was in terms of LEGO building skills. My job was to find the right model for target group, price point and region. It's also interesting to note that you develop way more models than you actually launch: development starts based on the script which might include scenes/models that get cut out later... so you start with the hero models from key scenes but also work on back-up sets based on vehicles that might not make it into the final cut.

As a big Lego fan, it's so so cool to me that Mr MacLane went into this movie with such a Lego oriented mindset, even going so far as designing specific aspects to fit the eventual Lego sets, like the blaster gun and the yellow canopy. And I guess that must be a part of why I'm so fond of the mechanical design in Lightyear. So many cool vehicles

“It’s fundamentally, devastatingly unpleasant, but it’s perfect for a kid’s movie!” That sums up the entirety of Pixar’s modus operandi pretty succinctly. Also, Angus talking about the red bag from The Bourne Identity only for Adam to immediately look down and pull *the very same bag from directly under the table they’re working at* is possibly the most quintessentially Adam Savage moment I’ve seen in a while.

I absolutely love how he used LEGO to basically sketch and draft some of the vehicles in the movie. I've always thought that if I were to ever have a chance to design a ship for a movie like Star Wars, I would start with LEGO. His point about LEGO creating necessary limitations to balance out the endless possibilities of CG is also fascinating.

Update: I just watched it on a transatlantic flight and must say that I was quite disappointed. While the set design and the camera work were outstanding, the "Buzz" character was well developed, and pace and timing were perfect, the overall story was the predictable Disney fare of run-off-the-mill "progressive" zeitgeist sensibilities... if I had kids in the age group targeted by the movie, I'd definitely would try to find something that's more subtle, more relevant and, most of all, better executed from a story perspective.

I LOVED hearing Angus talk about his relationship with Lego, especially that he loves building sets because "there's always something new to learn." THAT is the core appeal to me as well. I just build the XL-15 last Friday night and it was SO damn cool! The engineering for the wing is just spectacular and really sturdy! The stand gives it a great pose as well. I splurged on the other two sets afterwards so I could have all the versions of Buzz. Now I just have to watch the movie! EDIT: Almost forgot, I LOVE that the vehicles in the film started life as a Lego model, became a CGI creation, and were then converted back into Lego models. I wonder if that's a first? EDIT 2: OMG, Socks can fit behind Buzz in the cockpit?! Got to fix mine when I get home tonight!
