Robert Llewellyn gets an exclusive first look at the Lightyear One hyper-efficient luxury sedan, a partially solar powered electric car. And gets to experience it as one of the first passengers!
When Solar Team Eindhoven won the world solar challenge in Australia driving a 4 seater 100% solar powered car over 3,000 kilometers, no one would have believed that a handful of years later they could come up with this.

Get the recognition it deserves? Random music video will get 10000 times more views than this. And if this get too powerfull, they will be destroyed by the oil/petrol lobbies. Don't dream too much.

Oil/petrol companies are quite fat. Think of household products and many components of an ICE car or an EV car, they are all made of oil. They need to trim a bit their slice of pie. In the long run the oil/petrol will became quite scarce, people will find a replacement.

@@r.briquet1117 If big oil was so powerful, they would somehow have killed the solar panel industry. They likely had a hand in killing the first real EV, the GM EV-1. All drivers of that car was only allowed to lease that car. Nobody was allowed to own one. Many wealthy celebrities who could obviously afford it wasn't allowed to own it. Eventually, all of the lease agreements were called in and the EV-1 was actually crushed. Only a few of them exist as museum pieces. That was a good while ago. Big oil had a much more powerful stance then. The future is renewable energy. Even BP has wind farms providing electricity.

They already do, it's on the big tag on the side of the window (Monroney sticker). Says City mpg:XX Highway mpg:xx Electric cars do "range" instead for 2 reasons. 1, range has been electric car's limiting factor since the 1900's. 2, it allows them to hide that they get worse energy efficiency at highway speeds. The current record holder for longest drive on a single charge in a Tesla did so driving at speeds in the teens, 13-19 mph. While I like the concept I know reality rarely meets expectations. 4 days to full charge optimum. Most people are not going to be checking their compass to make sure they're getting optimum coverage, making sure their roof isn't getting partially blocked, etc. People will get at best 1/8 charge/day, and I'm betting half that. A lot of people that only travel 5-10 miles a day for work might be able to make it work for free though. And never being permanently out of power in the middle of nowhere would be awesome too.

@@macgyver9134 4 days to full charge? this is impossible they have at best 4m² (~3m*1.3m) and thats under perfect conditions (car would need to be angled or only when sun is exactly at highest point) about 0.5kWp (kilo Watt peak) so even this way, after 4 days and about 50h of sun you get only 25kWh realistically these modules are less efficient than "normal" stationary modules (i guess about 30% less), they are not angled (about 50% less sunlight) and it obviously depends on weather, so on average that's probably again about 50% less so realistically it is about 4kWh/4 days or 1kWh/day or about 1 charge every 2 months useless uneconomic shit

Did he say 10 to 20 km/hr charging on the battery. This car would drive me to work on a sunny day and have charged more than my return trip and then some. I'd only have to plug it in on long trips. This is definitely how we have to go.

Sorry dude, it's just not viable yet. More advances in solar panels, batteries and motors will be required. Maybe in 20 years. No one wants it more than me, but reality is reality.

yes and we still use torches, in fact, a torch can power a light bulb via thermoelectric plates. In a way, the ICE (internal combustion engine) is a complicated torch. Heat IS power dipshit. Heat also is responsible for the barriers in quantum computing as well as any other power source, including magnetism.

There are fundamental limitations to solar powered vehicles. Even if you magically had 100% efficient panels, perfect weather and you were under the mid day sun at the equator you'd only be getting about 6kw. If the vehichal is light enough this might get a few passengers up a moderate slope and under average conditions with current technology... You'd probably get more power from taking off the floor and having the driver Flintstones it. Don't get me wrong the panels would probably pay for themselves eventually and the tiny amount of extra weight would be worth it for the tiny amount of power they'd output but we're talking 1% extra power if that, hardly groundbreaking.

this idea is useless because its insanely expensive, besides its not needed petrol is cheap, and diesel is also cheap, you don't need unecessary expensive useless solar panels

When solar technology gets better and cheaper to produce, then the car will succeed. But a simple gas engine car like the Elio failed, doubt this will make it. Maybe in 10 years.

The "sono" "sion" is supposed to be in production within the next 4 months... It won't be as pretty nor as efficient but slightly more affordable.

Absolutely David. Conventional "Self Charging Hybrids" are petrol charged hybrids. Toyota (and others) are just hiding the fact that they are behind the curve on development of car electrification.

years ago i imagined what the perfect electric car would be, i thought it would have to be self charging because it makes so much sense to capture the free energy of the sun, it would have to be light to be efficient, and it would also have small motors on the rear wheels or every wheel to eleminate any loss through transmissions and drive shafts, i open my eyes and see this car and its exactly what i imagined it should be. amazing...

There is no free energy, you need to manufacture the solar panels wich contain harmful chemicals and you also need to replace them after some time, and those chemicals dont just dissapate.

No it's not. Solar panels are not recyclable. All those toxic metals inside can't be reused which makes it unsustainable for mass production...That is gonna be a problem which is not realized yet, but will soon enough.

To be honest, my expectation of solar powered EV is that, in a hot summer day, AC can cool off the interior before I get in, using the energy generated from parking directly under the sun. :-)

actually, when it's hot the efficiency of solar panels plummets... And on cold days the efficiency of batteries plummets... In the Netherlands, for a large part of the year there's next to no sunlight, when there is the solar panels would get plastered with bugs hitting the car and/or dust or snow/ice in minutes and lose efficiency.

The differences are, the concept car is an individuals vision, the production car is what you get after the "bean-counters" get a hold of it...the bean -counters say, "you can't do that !, it will cost too much!"...so we wind up getting crappy cars that are so far off what we saw at the auto-show.

@@svesom to me it honestly sounds less efficient over all. The custom molding for the car, the extra weight, more complicated car designs. More complex manufacturing. I'm all for the research, because all research ( non-ideological research anyways) is good.

@@weetikissa flying is actually more efficient. Small planes can do 20mpg at 155mph where a car of similar weight would be doing 10mpg.

He says it's aerodynamically efficient. But that very long tapering tail end is not the best for aerodynamic efficiency, it increases the frictional drag since the air stays in contact with that large tapering surface, this is why the 'Kamm' tail profile is usually preferred by auto engineers, this cuts that taper off and often includes a little upturned lip. (this can also improve the down force on the rear wheels though obviously that's not so important in this case). I presume they were wanting to maximise the surface area, for the solar panels. If you doubt what i say about drag, look at the difference in tail profile between the Aston Martin db4 and db6, though Aston Martin were seeking to make their car faster by reducing drag.... rather than more efficient! Also just a thought, when air slips over the surface of a car it tends to deposit the dirt in the air on the surface since the frictional drag lowers the air speed at the surface, those solar panels are going to have be polished pretty regularly to maintain their power output, i should think.

@@fuccasound3897 You are totally wrong. The cutted rear causes Air turbulences behind because of its sudden end. If your thoughts were true Wings of Air Planes would have been designed like that. But they are not. In fact some Trucks have air Panels at the rear end to prevent the Air stream from breacking. Super Cars and Formular Racing Cars have diffusors to prevent a Break of the Air stream. And spoilers on Race Cars which bend up to generate down force are Always a necessary compromise because they rise the cw. Those people behind lightyear one study physics and reached despite a small battery a very efficient range of 725 km. They are not that stupid to choose the wrong Design right in the beginning. The Team has a lot of experience and has won several Racing competitions.

i'm saying they have favoured solar panel area over reduction in surface drag. That is all. Diffusers are generally used to direct underbody air flow to prevent its interference with the air stream at the vehicle's rear. The raised lip on the tail as well as creating downforce ensures the air breaking away from the rear of, as you put it, "a cutted rear" creates less drag than without it, yes the air is turbulent, causing some drag but this can easily be less than the frictional drag caused by a long tapering tail end. Also, what is your take on keeping those solar panels clean? i'm not saying the design is wrong, i'm saying that in the design they have traded off one thing to favour another. The essence of good design is compromise isn't it? You sound angry, and not able to deal with a critique of something you obviously think is wonderful. Perhaps you are quite young?

There is a pretty big difference between having a prototype that can move (albeit very slowly it seems) and having the industrial capacity to produce and sell said car, the later is the real hurdle that most car startup crash at.

It's real but does it have any real world practical use beyond a few select areas? The fact of the matter is that solar powered cars can not be used in the majority of the world. I also don't see how they would ever be able to come up with the money to actually put it into production anyway.

It's very hard to find the good compromise with aerodynamics & styling. Plus the area for solar panels! What I see here it's streamlined 30s Tatra's design soul in 100% futuristic form, with NO retro resemblance. Very neat design, with no bells, whistles & trinkets which are overloading car styling today. And bright & clever engineering inside. She's gorgeous. However, many elements need to be improved. Fingers crossing!

It exudes calmness, ease and satisfaction. A little modern in a good sense Tatra 87 influence (the aerodynamic back), a little Volvo serenity, and yet super independent. I love it.

@@itabiritomg Wow! You're right... now, when adding the extra weight of the larger (more realistic) motors and larger battery capacity for them, what would that bring this 400+ km range down to??? Keep in mind that the self-charging ability would NOT scale along with the greater HP / battery capacity because the car is already completely covered in solar panels... Hmmm sounds fishy....

I think if the didn't cover the rear wheels it would look pretty normal. The front end is not unlike a Tesla.

Aerodynamics does not allow that much Space for crazy design ideas. The best shape in terms of efficiency is pretty much a falling drop of water.

The design is really good. Most modern cars, especially electric cars, look not insulting at best and just awful at worst. This however is pure elegance. I would like to have it not just for the sake of having a car (I currently have the e-up), but because it looks so good.

Not until we have cheap good solar panels, and even then not that great actually. Main problem is solar power requires 10 times more area than a car to make it truly self sufficient

@@levkrainov Amazing that so many people bat a blind eye towards the leaps-and-bounds technology makes. Thirty years ago the tech wasn't there to make the Lightyear an actuality. It takes an optimistic consumer-base to help the industry evolve and grow. For D'sTech, it may just be perfect. To criticize what constitutes perfection for someone else is brash.

Robert Feight to quote Star Trek’s Scotty: “You canna change the laws of physics.” No amount of efficiency improvements or new technology will ever be enough for a car the dimensions of a standard 5 passenger sedan to travel powered purely by solar panels mounted within the footprint of the car. There simply isn’t enough energy in the sunlight. That fact means that the most practical, economic solution will *always* be to used fixed solar to provide the energy, and some kind of energy storage (depending how you define it, a “battery”) in the vehicle. Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania does this today. They converted one of their unused parking lots to a solar “farm” and now when electric race cars race at Pocono they do so without any CO2 emissions. www.evsr.net for more info on the electric race cars that race at Pocono.

Is the point of this not to extend the range on the car? I don't think they are trying to make it run purely off of solar. It has a battery that is smaller than a Tesla yet it can get more range on a sunny day. If we can find away to cheaply incorporate solar panels into the roofs of electric cars which can give us 50-200km extra range depending on weather I think that is a great idea.

Evan Leggett I ran some numbers based on the idea that “adding some range” is worthwhile, especially if it allows for smaller battery packs, thus lighter, more efficient cars. Assuming a 1kW panel and a car needing 50wH/km (both rather optimistic, put plausible, given current tech) then in the course of an hour’s driving we will have added 1kWh to the battery (more precisely, not used that much electric from the battery) which is an additional 20km of range, or 20%. That’s not too shabby, and that’s not the absolute “best case” because we can always posit a more efficient car or solar panel, but it’s certainly toward the best case end of the scale. However, in contrast, consider adding commercially available panels to a Tesla: get perhaps 300w from solar for a car using 150wH/km and after an hour’s drive we have only added 2km range, or 1.3%. Not really worthwhile. But, doing the math has me revising my thinking on the concept of adding solar panels to an electric car. If the panels themselves are efficient enough, and the car efficient enough, then there comes a point where it might make sense. But the fact remains that solar can’t be relied upon while driving, so to quell range anxiety the battery packs will still have to be large enough to get to the next charging station without relying on the solar panels.

Most solar panels are only 15% efficient not taking into account power conversion and resistance. The panels need to be kept clean of dust, moisture, snow and oriented correctly towards the sun. You need an inverter and batteries to store the power. I don't think with 15% efficiency that you'd have the sq. meters on a van to generate enough power. It would be nice but I don't think it's feasible yet.

Realy, you think that? I mean Solar panels are existing for decades. And Elektro Motors even longer. Sure Eficiency increase. But the reason was more , that it was not in Mainstream. Nobody knew sbout this technology on wide mass.

@@kirschkern8260 the solar races have been held in Austrailia since 1987, so the tech has been known in automotive circles since the early 2000s. Solar panel efficiency doubled from 2015 to 2018. Not only that, but the weight of the substrates has dropped dramatically. These changes have taken something that wasn't worth doing at all 5 years ago to something that is barely worth doing in 2020 and something that may make a whole lot of sense in 2025

This was the first time testing it as a completely done vehicle. I understand why they would do that and that is to demonstrate their confidence in the car and because they are pushing for sooner production.
