As a newbie, I thank you all for taking the time. It's a fun hobby! I was over here freaking out about how so many people have figs already and my potted trees don't...but we barely broke 80 degrees in my part of San Diego maybe two weeks ago. So, yeah...my figs just recently began ripening/growing. Also, some of my varieties are late types...made even later by my awesome SD weather! (: I guess I can't complain!

We have got three months before the leaves start to turn yellow and drop to the ground so I'm quite happy to let mine do there thing for the time being.

Your videos about Figs are very interesting I live in Venezuela where it is always Summer over here, around 80 degrees mostly. I have in my front yard 2 planted in the ground, and 3 in containers with very good drainage I have paid a lot of attention. They are not yet a year old and I am eager to see the full development of the plant and its fruits, I consider myself as a Figs Freak

What should I do with a fig tree in a pot....during winter!...
@vtec18c6 ай бұрын
So I started to grow figs this but only have young trees they are all from cuttings ranging from 12 inches to 2.5 feet… so your advice is just let them keep growing through the rest of the season? And what’s the best way to store them in the winter I’m in Z 7a

Thanks so much for these great tips. If it were me I'd make a planter for a climbing rosebush just to the right of the staircase with a minimal trellis.

That would be beautiful.

Did the wilt Pruf help over the winter?
@RossRaddi3 жыл бұрын
It certainly helps, but if you reach a certain low, all the wilt pruf in the world can't save you.

The same story is summer pruning of fruit trees. Lignifying initiated and accelerated, so they become more resistent to the frost.

In zone 8a I still have about 4 months or so till first frost. Should I pinch my inground trees like this to slow their growth and promote fruiting or just let them go?
@RossRaddi5 жыл бұрын
Let them go.

Yeah, like me who has never tasted fig or grown for that matter would ask a damn questions...lol However, this got to think of at least growing one. And so this is my question, do I have to buy at least 2 dif. varieties of fig in order to have the tree fruited--if that questions make sense because I heard other fruit trees does. Thanks
@drea4195 Жыл бұрын
Doesn't look like you got a reply, so here: no, you don't need a second tree to cross-pollinate or whatever. Common figs such as we grow in our back yards all over the world set fruit without pollination. A few certain varieties do need pollination, but unless you live in a specific area that has fig wasps, those aren't for you.

Does girdling hurt your growth next year?
@RossRaddi5 жыл бұрын
The affects are not yet clear. It could also affect hardiness and you wouldn't even have a shoot that'll be hurting next year. For now I am sticking with scoring. I'll do a video later on that specifically.

To increase fruit set decrease nitrogen and increase phosphorus and potassium. Big vegetative growth happens with excess nitrogen.
