Thank you, Dr. Sproul. That was very, very clear. I need Jesus just as much as a pharisee and just as much as a tax collector.

I was under the impression that tithing was not a commandment. I'm so glad that I watched this. Since I dont have a job and im only 17 I have an allowance but I will give 10% of what I have. I'm so glad that I saw this video since I didn't know tithing was something I was supposed to do.

Tithing is NOT a command for Christians. The church isn’t to “tax” believers. Believers are to give offerings (as to what they are able and willing), not be taxed by the church. This isn’t Roman Catholicism. The New Testament is clear on how to give. Temple or priestly tithing is an Old Testament theocratic tax where its origins trace back to the days of Abraham, but its system essentially ended with the temple being destroyed in 70 A.D.

@@HearGodsWord Yet you cannot justify it honestly from scripture. The scriptures are clear that a tithing tax is not a command given in scripture. R.C. doesn’t even make that argument, he simply bases his presumptions on Old Testament principles, not New Testament instructions on giving. All the evidence one needs is readily available in those links, especially the one from Dr. John MacArthur, who adamantly disagrees with R.C. on tithing. To go as far as R.C. did here to say that not tithing is “stealing from God” is utter heresy. I now question his motivations for pushing tithing… self-boastfulness, greed, fear, ignorance, control, tradition? Whatever it was, it certainly wasn’t scripture.

@@HearGodsWord Ah, there it is. You tithe so you can boast about being “unselfish.” You tithe because you’ve been tricked into feeling obligated to do so, lest you be called “selfish.” Do you know why I DON’T tithe? I’ve already said it, but I’ll repeat it for you. I DON’T tithe because it’s not biblical. I choose to be obedient to, and accurately adhere to God’s Word over man’s misconstrued beliefs. However, I do give, and I give cheerfully, without compulsion, not under obligation, generously as I am able, and according to what’s in my heart, just as scripture directs.
