Jess, you have always made me feel better about myself. I'm very sensitive and at times, I have been made to feel very silly and even stupid. I love the change of the seasons, but also can cry about them. In the fall when the bigger fall spiders come and the black and yellow writing spiders, I give them names and watch them and worry about whether they're getting enough food. Also, i video them every fall so that I can look back on them during the winter. I know they're going to leave but once they do I get sad and miss them. I will also cry a little. Also, they all have names. There's a whole line of trees along our property and the birds come into roost every evening. I like to be out there in my flower gardens or on the porch when they come in to roost because the sound of their wings as they're coming in gives me the most delicious, wonderful feeling. That is something I can also cry about too. Somehow it makes me feel very emotional. Thanks to you, I feel like this is just all perfectly normal for me because of my sensitivity and the love I have in my heart. You're such a sweet gal and I thank you for making me feel good about myself and helping me learn to love who I am. I love you sweet girl. ✌️✌️💜💜🙏🙏

Also, unripe pumpkins can be used like zucchini in soups, or stews or curries or whatever just add a little more spice because they’re very mild and flavor but they’re just like zucchini.

You can use green pumpkin in a mock "apple pie." Peal the pumpkin and cut into apple pie size slices. Substitute in your favorite baked apple or pear recipes.

One of my favorite childhood books "The Long Winter" by Laura Ingalls Wilder had Ma making a pie with green pumpkin with a top crust and they did tell Pa what it was. He thought it was an apple pie.

Use them like a zucchini. When I was in the Army I lived somewhere with enough room for a garden, but a small one. My tomatoes struggled one year with blight so I didn't have as many as I needed for a batch of spaghetti sauce my girls had asked for. My neighbors had an overabundance of pumpkins growing and asked if we would want some when they ripened. I asked if I could have a couple green. I used the pumpkin as filler for the spaghetti sauce just as I do zucchini some years. Now I have a lot of room and anything squash related that doesn't ripen fully is fed to the chickens.

Hey Jess, I am in Canada and have to pick my pumpkins when they are green most seasons! I allow them to ripen as the winter progresses and use them as they ripen. As mentioned, if the skins don't toughen up they will not store as long. I really appreciate all your videos and the blessings you give us at the sign off :)

Thank you so much! I’m in PNW and have so many BIG pumpkins that are green or slightly orange. I haven’t tried to ripen off the vine. It seeing comment from you and a couple others gives me some more confidence. I’ll probably use some to decorate but I try to balance that with also getting some food value. And the chickens only need so many….

I just dug my sweet potatoes last night. We are freezing tomorrow night. Then one night above freezing, and then five nights in a row of teens and twenties. There’s no surviving that. I have a few more things to get off today. Our average first frost is oct 6th, so we’re WAY past that. We had a cold wet spring here in Utah, so I’m glad we ran long this fall. I planted much later than preferred, but it ended up working out.

I would love that opportunity with you too some day. I was grateful to make it happen Sunday & Monday for two incredible photo shoots with our vibrant Fall colors, and literally the last two days of warm sunshine.. So rewarding to create gorgeous memories for others.. These were more of my gifted / donated photo shoots to family and local Rodeo queen fundraiser.. Oh, the feels are with me also. We’re having a longer season than what’s average here in southern Ohio. We’ve had one near miss so far and then warmer evening temps for the past week. Now that I’ve checked the calendar again, Saturday will be our last dry day and Sunday night…it will certainly me to the real closing. I absolutely LOVE the last ditch harvests before it comes! The time when the temps were good for moving and planting perennials, we were having a month long dry spell and I didn’t risk it. 😂 It’s gonna be a busy spring!! 😊

In Saskatchewan Canada - and our season is short but intense - zone 3... I understand the grief of upcoming frost. The absolute gut wrenching grief to see everything so beautiful and know that it will not only be dead overnight but that winter will be long and dark and probably around 6 months. Hearing you discuss your grief - even though you are south - makes me feel better. It is grief. It is real. It is every year and though we understand this cycle - that grief is real and intense and just part of it. Your videos - and quilting and making art like you do - starting plants in greenhouses in my basement ... dreaming of next garden...get us through. Love your videos and they mean so much.

We are getting nights in the low 30's and the heavy rains have started. I am learning new things this fall and looking forward to spring. There has been so much to do before the first freeze. I brought in my last four pumpkins and brought in the ginger. The lemons trees and the key lime tree are happily living in my office next to my orchids. I took some cuttings from my favorite tomato plants to winter over. It can be sad to see the seasons change, but the leaves on the trees are beautiful here. I still have pruning to do and sorting my seeds and planning what I will do differently next year. I bless you as well.

There was a season of my life when I was “ruining “ my “good” clothes because I would come home and just want to unwind by creating some art project. After a while I just gave up having special clothes and lived happily with the I’m an artist style. Colorful paint splotches and all. Now that I am channeling most of my creative energy into the novel I’m writing, I don’t mess up my good clothes as much and actually got a few outfits that will be for going to the book signing when the time comes. As for the green pumpkin… I would cut one up and roast a piece plain to see the taste and then go from there. I get imaginative in the kitchen when I am blessed with variety and full pantry. Something I would try is “green pumpkin soup“ pumpkin peppers and possibly green tomatoes and tomatillo parsley and chives-- lay on the green stuff you think would go well together!!!

As an urban (front yard) gardener, when going in i regularly see things that need to be done....which means I regularly garden "for just a quick min" in clothes/shoes I shouldn't....and yes, I've completely ruined a few items. Im actually in the process of replacing a few of my nicer shirts and a few that are staple/basic shirts that I add layers/accessories to in order to make a dressier look. As I watch your channel, I regularly think "Same!", "Me too!", or "That's sooo me!". It's why you quickly became my favorite channel to watch and learn from.

I literally hate and dread this time of year, but I'm learning to work with it. My gardens have been done for a couple weeks, so now, I'm focusing on building the soil for next year. I added later number two to my cinder block raised bed because we decided one layer isn't deep enough. Realizing that January isn't that far off for seed starting is priceless 😂 3 months away

I always hate seeing 32 degrees on the weather forecast too. Thankfully we don’t see it here in zone 10a very often! We don’t really get a rest. This is when we do the majority of our gardening here. Once or twice a year we scramble to cover everything but mostly it’s just beautiful! I’m so glad we don’t have snow and or frost!

While we are having warm temperatures, lows start Halloween night a 29 estimate for 2 nights. It's a rollercoaster of temperatures here in Middle TN. Enjoying the leaves changing colors and squirrels gathering their goodies for winter. The birds appreciating the birdseed we have thrown out in the backyard. I have a huge window by my couch that I can watch the days activities outside. I have the perfect view of the kitchen and the outside to be aware of all the little pieces of life to appreciate and share. Thank you for sharing your daily life with us.

I'm here in Idaho and while not trying to harvest food or medicinals before the 'critical visitor', I did get home from work tonight and have to rush and bring in (in freezing rain!) about 20 tropical houseplants that enjoy living outdoors for the warmer half of the year. It's 42 deg here now with a forecasted overnight low of 34. Last Saturday it was 70 degrees!. I agree, it goes from on the to-do list to the omg-right-now list. And yes - I was in my office clothes lol!

We are in a deep freeze this week. Garden is all into the safety of the house....now to deal with it. Green Pumpkins will ripen off the vine...All my pumpkins are picked green and left to ripen in the house. Good video!

As a cut flower grower, we usually soak and pre-sprout ranunculus corms, usually takes 2-3 ish weeks to sprout. We sprout them in containers and then plant them.

I googled it and it said you can make soup out of a green pumpkin or use anyway you would a zucchini, so not a sweet use but more savory here is a receipt: HOW TO COOK GREEN PUMPKIN Preheat the oven to 400°F, placing the oven rack in the upper middle position. Turn on the convection or forced air if available. Line a large baking sheet with parchment and set aside. Using a chef’s knife, slice the pumpkin vertically into ½-inch thick pieces, removing the seeds and pith as you go. In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, optional rosemary, garlic powder, salt and pepper Arrange the pumpkin pieces on the prepared baking sheet. Brush each piece generously with the olive oil mixture. Roast for about 15 minutes or until fork-tender. Remove from the oven. Serve warm, spooning any pan juices on top for extra flavor

Last year in December or early January, we saw three or four days with lows around 18-20° and highs barely reaching 32°. I tried covering my brassicas. Wind whipped under the edges, and even areas not "ventilated" by the northern winds died back. Around 85% were totally killed. What weren't, didn't recover enough to produce in the spring. Instead, the surviving roots produced lots of new sprouts (including cauliflower). I managed to keep them alive through the awful Texas summer highs around 109° and they have continued to sent up new sprouts. I am experimenting with propagating brassicas and growing them perennially because of this experience. I have filled up garden beds with propagating these shoots--some that had roots because they sprouted from the root stock of the mother plant beneath the soil and some that were just cut off from the mother's stem above ground. I had this summer kill off a cabbage head, so I cut the head off. That stem has two separate baby plants growing on it, so I'm going to experiment with that too. It just shows how much plants want to grow when they go into hyper-reproduction when all that survived a weather event was the roots. Pretty exciting stuff!

I saw a post recently where someone accidently broke the stem on a pumpkin before it was ready. The vine was long, so they decided to do an experiment. They created a wicking system for the pumpkin. They used a milk just set above the pumpkin and a rope to wick water from the jug to the vine. . They were able to not only give the pumpkin time to ripen, but they said it actually grew slightly.

In India we use only green pumpkin for sautéed veg with little lemon and little sweet and salt, we eat it in curd also we never ever use ripe pumpkins, just make it with little ,cumin, mustard, fenugreek and fennel seeds and coriander and garammasala , even mix veggies with green pumpkin,brinjal,cauliflower and spinach and radish yummy

SW Arkansas and it's been 60-85 for weeks. We're expecting 37 F next week. Then no 30's for weeks. I've been putting out perennials, bulbs, and pansies I started from seed, so that gives me something to look forward to winter and next year. Everything works together for good❤

We are expecting and working for our frost which is due tonight/tomorrow. In anticipation I grabbed a big box of fabric and brought it in to my area so that I can SLOW DOWN and quilt again. Ahhhhhh....

Our estimated first frost in the Seattle area was today. And boy was it spot on! We went from warm(ish), to cool, to HOLY CANOLI I HAVE NOSE CYCLES in a matter of a few weeks!

We've already had our first frost and in a few days our nights are going down to the low 20's. Since I still have peas, lettuce and broccoli rabe growing in our raised beds, I put down 6"-8" of straw in all the beds paying closest attn to these veggies. It's hard to see the garden closed down for the season. In fact it's so hard that I'm upgrading my indoor greenhouse to a bigger and better one so I can grow herbs, baby greens and microgreens all winter inside! LOL! When there's a will there's a way. 🌿🌱🌿

Yup. I ruin everything wearing them in the garden 😂. I do feel so sad and lost when my garden is done until spring. Sharing the holidays with my kids is what I’m looking forward to. I’m trying a fresh home cooked pumpkin to make pies and cookies for the first time which will keep me busy. I may even sit down and sew with the view of my chickens and garden ❤

Today was triage day before the rain came (first frost will be tomorrow night, but I didn't want to harvest tomatoes in the probable snow). I picked quinces, peppers - SO many peppers, probably 50-75 lbs of peppers - squashes, and mostly-green tomatoes. So many tomatoes, even more than the peppers. I just barely got it all to our back porch before the rain started. Our kitchen is large, but there is no more floor space until I can sort out my produce. Honestly, I'm so burnt out that I am ready for everything to die - but I still need to plant garlic and dig the last of my experimental sweet potatoes and . . . and . . . and . . .

As far as freezing weather, you are fortunate to have a glass house which I believe you have heated and the poly tunnels which are unheated and maybe can grow lettuces and even cherry tomatoes indoors, but still can protect your Winter cole and root crops.

We've had our light frost - almost everything ok, then a bit later, temps in the twenties, so a lot more died. The last week it has been warmer again and my remaining tomatoes and peppers are still ripening on the dead vines. However, tomorrow we go back into the twenties at night and then lower each night - snow and temps in the teens this weekend. So going to harvest what's left today. It's actually been a nice fall for the most part and we need some precipitation, so trying to be ok with the idea of real snowfall soon. We live in the foothills of northern Colorado.

This weekend 32* Going to dig the potatoes & finish taking tomatoes out. Garlic, onions, leeks & carrots r all in….will gather some zinnia seed and pick the last dahlias 🥹. Cooked some spaghetti squash this afternoon, butternuts next week. Been thinking about bread a lot. Just started raining again…my poor potatoes… melancholy days💜

My first frost came this week along with six inches of snow. The garden is definitely put to bed. The frost was very, very late and the snow was very early.

I grew sweet potatoes one year in a 20 gallon grow bag. I didn't get a large harvest but it was still good for a container garden. The vines did spread out into the yard and despite getting a hard freeze here on the Gulf Coast in Texas, I had volunteer sweet potaoes popping up in the yard the next spring. Those things are vigorous lol. I also ruin clothes gardening or cleaning. I really need to use my aprons or just change despite being crunched for time. I'm also someone that starts a million tasks at the same time and I'm lucky to get one done by the end of the day.

This video helped me so much! it popped up just at the time I was going out on my balcony to take out as much of my garden as I could. It was so much easier when I was listening to you. There are still a few Tomatoes hanging on and I can't bear to take them down yet. It has frosted on the ground but it's warmer on the fourth floor . There will be a couple of warm days this week so I'm leaving them on for now.

Mine were setting flowers and fruit after our cool down. It was a very hot and dry summer here..looking forward to putting up green tomato pickles and relish...and wrapping them in newspaper and putting them in a dark place so I can have tomatoes thru atleast Thanksgiving..

Just reading the title I knew exactly what you were talking about before watching the video. However, winter doesn't bring me rest. I have lambs to butcher and chicken feet to process into stock and deer to hunt and process. The only rest I get is from the flies I guess.

I loved your pause to compose yourself lol I’m actually taking this season change well. I already felt like I failed my garden all summer with neglect so I actually felt some mental relief when the air turned cool thinking, “Alright, guilt, you’ve done your time all year. Go away with the summer.” . . Then I saw your pea sprouts and thought I should plant some quick peas haha it never ends when you love gardening. My excuse for overgrown garden is five kids under 8, but Lord, how much more incentive do I need to grow our own food?! Back to thinking about how I’m failing ahhhhh
