13:15 THANK YOU!!!! as someone who has seen the "popular" opinions on these games so much one consistent thing I notice is fans downplaying the older games and using 0 as a comparison of the quality standard of the series. I think it's not only unfair to those games because they released before 0, but also because each Yakuza game doesn't set out to do the exact same thing, and the same goes for 0. First time I was genuinely disappointed by a Yakuza game. It wasn't bad, the changes of the remake just vastly overshadowed the positives for me. Add to that my frustration with todays "remake" philosophy, where perfectly fine games get remade just out of fear that they have somehow become outdated. I find this extra infuriating in this case since Yakuza's big success in the west with Zero, literally proved a great game can and will succeed despite having "unimpressive graphics". Hell, I'd argue the simple artstyle of Yakuza 5, Ishin and 0 holds up extremely well. All I wanted was to experience the game in it's original form, instead I feel like I played some weird falsified version. But I guess having a shiny new coat of paint (which really wasn't that shiny) is somehow more important than delivering a version of the game that is true to it's original vision. Edit: 12:47 I actually emulated the original because I just wanted to have the comparison and the combat was so much better imo, the remake just felt flat, no feedback, no combo potential.
@andresaguilera115 Жыл бұрын
I agree with most of the things you said. However I will say that this game, in my opinion at least, is justified in being a remake. The original game isn't in english and it's a game that fans have wanted translated in the west for a VERY long time, so instead of releasing a port or remaster with english subtitles why WOULDN'T they create it from the ground up with better graphics (even though I do prefer the art-style in 0 and 5) and frame-rate.
@ghostspartan81 Жыл бұрын
@@andresaguilera115except it's hardly created from the ground up and they just ported all the older assets into unreal engine 4 which somehow looks worse at times. They should've just ported it. This just seemed like a test run to check if unreal engine 4 was worth using.
@GunGun-cf3ss Жыл бұрын
@@andresaguilera115 simple, because they really didn't need to. They have a fully functional game already which just needed to be localized and ported. So why did they opt to remake it when they remedied none of the originals issues or improved it in any significant way? The only reason I can think of is that they wanted to see if unreal engine would be a viable option for them in the future, but this was not the game to test that on. Treating a beloved game, which fans have been wanting to play for a decade, as an experiment was a very stupid move imo.
@KingKrouch Жыл бұрын
@@ghostspartan81 Not to mention the other issues with Unreal Engine plaguing it, especially on PC. The previous Yakuza games just worked with PlayStation controllers and ultrawide displays on PC, without any mods or third-party tweaks/drivers/software needed, and they're pretty competent ports (Setting aside some hardware utilization and performance issues in Kiwami 2, Yakuza 6, and Yakuza 7) and yet the Ishin Remake on PC had pillarboxes + FOV cropping, and had a problem where PlayStation controller prompts would only appear if you plug a PS4 controller into your PC over USB (Which means SteamInput has to be disabled, and means no Bluetooth either). I had to use DualSenseX (A third-party driver for Windows) to simulate my Bluetooth connected DualSense controller as being a DualShock 4 plugged in over USB in order for it to even work, and those playing on Proton are far less fortunate. There was a mod to fix these two issues, but by the time that Sega finally fixed the controller issue, it was already weeks after release, and the other one never really got addressed. Not to mention the shader compilation and asset streaming stutter which never truly got fully fixed. The only games that use the engine that I've seen that had a nearly perfect launch are Gears 5, HiFi Rush, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2. I'd rather play a Unity game at this point, because at least those can be modded and fixed more easily, the tools for fixing Unreal Engine games is many light years behind. Honestly, anything with Unreal Engine plastered in the marketing sets off red flags for me, because the vast majority of every bad PC release in the past five to ten years was using Unreal Engine by a team with very little experience using it outside of Blueprints. Not to mention how homogenized games using the look, because Epic made it incredibly difficult to have custom shaders. HiFi Rush and the Arc System Works games are the exception to that (The ladder which skipped a lot of rendering features in the engine in favor of forward shading, which does more easily allow flexibility). People love to defend the engine saying "It's up to the developers to fix these things", but at the same time, Epic's advertised the engine as being straight-forward to use with easy multi-platform support, and they haven't made any efforts to fix most of these issues (outside of the shader stuttering as of Unreal Engine 5.1), and these defenders can't have it both ways. Almost as insufferable as the people that defend Epic's storefront being slow and barebones. Anyone defending that engine or storefront in 2023 doesn't give a single shit about UX (the end-user experience).

I've played the original; i'm not a huge crunchy detailed gamer analyst or anything, but something about the original combat just felt different and more fun. I don't know if its rose-tinted glasses, but I genuinely had a blast with the OG ishin gameplay but playing this new version didn't feel near as satisfying. I think most of the rest of your critiques apply to the original though.
@stormysoup1083 Жыл бұрын
No you're not looking at it through rose tinted glasses, the remake actually does play different in several substantial ways that make it a worse game, for one sword and brawler have been nerfed severely while wild dancer has barely been touched, leading to wild dancer being the only viable style in most situations, wallbounds and back combos are pretty much gone which makes opening up large enemies that block a lot, much more tedious, most bosses and even regular enemies no longer really react to hitstun at all which forces you to play much more defensively and hurts player expression, as well added a ton of stupid elemental desperation moves that don't fit the game, Ishin and Ishin Kiwami are not the same game
@MilkJugA_ Жыл бұрын
I will appreciate ishin mostly for its story and setting. Both were done very well and it felt immersive throughout the entire game.
@Madvillain47 Жыл бұрын
On the combat issues you mentioned Kiwami unfortunately heavily nerfed swordsman and brawler style makings it extremely weak by comparison to the original. Biggest issue i found was the extreme hyper armor added on bosses making it so difficult to combo or even knock them downfall at all. Thought it was still a fun game but it definitely feels worse than the original making me wishing they just remastered it similar to Yakuza 3-5.
@m8rs558 Жыл бұрын
I may be wrong, but I think the reason multiple characters are recast to resemble characters from the new games is because they were that way in the original, having equivalents of characters from Yakuza 4 and 5. So, the brawl style does like 6 per punch and 12 damage per combo finisher. but with the equipement, you can make it to a whopping 24 damage max on a finisher! It's still lower than any style's single basic combo! Even the Tiger Drop does like 160 Damage, which a single charge sword finisher can do! (not counting the combo string prior, which can do up to like 1400 damage total) Are those damage numbers a lot, you might ask? I HAVE NO IDEA.

>Combat not living up to hype I personally think part of this is to due to the other stances being significantly worse than wild dancer in LAD:ish. Yes gunman (as I call it) is best dps (basically necessary in a NUR+, if you want to keep your sanity), but the fact katana stance’s guard is very inconsistent (more often than not enemies end up hitting right through your guard) and the katana damage drop off at about 600-700 damage (stats any higher have little to no difference damage you always average about 49-59 ish damage wise after - may have changed in a recent patch but was true when I tested it) and brawler stance hitting like a literal wet tissue heavily reduce options which are fun to use. Aswell as all this the fact the guard break is extremely pointless and usually results in you getting punished (even when used correctly) is not fun. Another big issue I personally have is bosses/mini bosses. Their hyper armour really ain’t an issue with wild dancer thanks to its ‘knock back’ properties (making bosses stumble) using katana or brawler is borderline impossible. Katana you are restricted from doing a 3 hit combo (in some cases 2) before bosses decide they don’t care and turn to. And brawler does little to no damage and suffers from a similar issue. These really take away a lot of the fun as the way you play a boss at the start of the game isn’t really much different as using other stances is basically punished. (Excluding heat actions, of course you can do more of them, but combo variation and stance variation is almost impossible). Just to make it clear I’m not saying everything has to be like judgment or yakuza 0 with broken combos. But at least the most basic combos should be usable in a boss fight. Quick Note: Damage stats aren’t exact when speaking about katana damage, as I’m recalling from memory but the damage drop off is/was true And all of this wasn’t much of an issue in the original, which in my opinion had more enjoyable combat. Great video and keep up the good work. Honestly surprised how to the point your retrospective is, whilst ensuring you got your points across fairly clearly.

Ishin combat, from what I've seen, was never *that* good. But I can see how absolutely inferior Ishin Kiwami's combat is compared to the original. I think one particularly egregious instance of this; is the Circle/B swordsman style Guard break move. Originally (if I recall correctly) breaking an enemy's guard with that move allowed you to follow through with a full combo. Now I'm not even sure if that works at all. And the fact that you can use any attack against grounded enemy's results in your greatest priority in combat to be: "ok I'll just get them on the floor as fast as I can and then deal damage and repeat." No Bounding, no real thought to the combo's, just light attacking a guy who can't do anything back at you because you got lucky or spaced well enough to land 1 (one) finisher. No need to time the first finisher with swordsman as they're waking up, no need to use the second charged finisher to keep them grounded. Just super thoughtless. And that's pretty much all I saw from the demo's combat that I needed to (and remember) to make me lose interest in the game. And it doesn't even change animation to make your attacks connect with enemies on the ground, so you just hit the air above them. How does this happen? I mean I've seen modders add movesets to Kiwami 2 and Lost Judgement before and make these animation adjustments themselves, it's hard yeah but for a dev team who made the feature? Was there an issue with porting it to unreal engine? Not enough dev time? Who knows. Also, they nerfed brawler's damage by like 80% for no fucking reason I just don't get it why???? huh???? huh???? wha????? I foremost care about combat in these games, and I consider it to not be worth the price tag attached, couple that with the fact that it's an entirely "new" character cast, and that it will never get a sequel; and I find myself somewhat disinterested in it all in all.
@MugdhaMahdiShams Жыл бұрын
Brawler can be made OP as hell using seals or that one loincloth you get in story mode by default. In OG Ishin Brawler was 10 times slower but the parry invincibility lasted longer. So nerfs and buffs all around.

I had a similar experience, after all the hype, while playing this game I was like "that's it?" Not a bad game at all, but as you mentioned, I dont see the point of this being a remake, they spent a lot of time and money on something that wasnt necesary, because they didnt "update" the gameplay, and all that time and money also meant a full price, while a remaster could've come out for 30/40 bucks, reducing the expectations fans had with this game... I think the Yakuza series is in a "weird" place right know, with the series finally being super popular in the west, I feel Sega is milking it too much, we are getting another spin-off, Kiryu again in 8...and I'm not a fan of the name-change either...and 8 taking place in the US feels "weird" I understand the Yakuza series has been carrying the entire company for the past decade, but Yakuza SHOULDNT be an annual franchise.

As someone who did 100% the game nope Brawler never gets better damage-wise lol, and yeah Gunman is ridiculously OP. Mainly because there are seals that essentially turn your gun into a freaking machine gun. It's like using SMGs in DMC2 except the damage is 1000x higher. Anyway I liked the game overall but to me it's clear they still used a lot of the bones of the original game. The combat, physics, and general controls feel closer to the PS3 era games as opposed to a "remake" that is closer to newer games like Judgment or LJ. The camera in particular doesn't let you control the Y axis (snaps back to neutral when you let go of the stick) which is a big pet peeve of mine. But it doesn't bug me when I think of this as a remaster of an old game instead of a full blown remake (which it does not feel like to me. It's more like a "remix.") As a newcomer to the series I had no real hype or anything, I just played it as a new Yakua entry and liked it.

A lot of the grind of the original was probably meant for the vita app, too bad the remaster didnt ajust for that.

The remake ironically didn’t fix many of the game’s issues. I think the setting and story are a great change of pace, even if the story itself has problems. I still enjoyed it though!

Nah, seals in OG didn't stack yet they do in Kiwami. So it didn't matter if you got seals easier originally, you couldn't use em to become that much stronger. Just tiny boosts.

So the 3 retrospective is shelfed for when the Kiwami comes out a decade later? Got it. On another note, I'd love there to be a Kenzan remake which doesn't mess with the og and one which doesn't try to appeal to the new fans

Still wanting a Dead souls remaster/remake, that game could use alot of improvements. like add a dash of Ishin! gameplay and combat for firearms and able to use swords or melee weapons on zombies.

I really love this game. As someone who's interested in japanese history, Ishin mixes history and fiction in a beautiful way. While I agree that the grinding is one of the worst in the series and the remake could've made much more changes to the gameplay, it's still very fun to play and the bakumatsu setting really fit the yakuza formula. I also like how you're severely punished if you don't use the styles to their advantages. it's one of the most challenging RGG games but it still feels fair. I played on Legend without trooper, I died a couple times but it's still good. Now I'm playing on Ishin difficulty with healing/suport trooper and honestly it is actually fun using these troopers as healing/support trooper functions the same as healing items without pausing the game. There are some OP card which completely destroys even bosses and I ignore them completely. A lot of Ishin's issues is about balancing, these OP card is not optimized at all I think.

I always had a thought in my head that this game would not sell well because of how nishe the francise is, and having ghost of tsushima and other Yakuza's in our minds as reference Had a few buds on playstation joke how ishin would never come, and found it ironic the game gets announced when the main director steps down to the creative team (felt inspirong to see the creator want to actually be part of the design team, apologies if i got it wrong in any way) But, I would say it's a beautiful game, as i had my first yakuza experience with 0 as i ask "darn should i download it completly so the graphics load up?" Which was a game i almost didnt get cause a cousin said it looked weird and lewd with the Dancing girls and groping scene But Ishin, while not exactly a "this is pretty good!" Moment was spared criticism because i was happy to finally have the prophecied game in my hand, even had too get it physical just for the Sticker the physical games get , Played 7 in parts and it grew on me so friggen fast that i force myself to finish the rest of the series (at 3 currently) even when I've been spoiled to helk and back Ishin got "yo does it need to update to get less clunky?" And me getting stuck on the dumbest "find the Master's inn" for an hour. It didnt have the substory finder or wayfinders of previous games (while handholdy, i try to get the most of my first playthrough , in case I never play the game again due to college or wanna fight Amon in this case) It holds that special place in my heart as a game that would break all barriers and cement me as the Ryu Ga Gotoku fan I've become over the years thanks to Covid and fighting my mom for Kiwami 1/2 digitally and 7's steel book even I bought Lost judgement for less than ishin and feel it shoulda been vice versa from what ive seen on lJ without even touching the game yet. I still am glad i got it full price to support the devs, they deserve every cent And while it may be Fan mentality, i think for all its worth, it stands as a great Like a dragon game for bringing samurai and darker topics into the Franchise Its not the 10s fans throws out, and i wouldnt say its the 6/7s that critics would fling either Id say its a personal experience you come to enjoy, knowing it coulda been legendary, but was a good enough experience to stand toe to toe with the rest of the games in your library I hope if Kensan comes, it pulls a Kiwami and ends up not being as loved as the first but having vastly better combat and a more faithful take on the original (even with how dark the subject matter in that game is) Great video, it sorta gave me closure on what I always felt but couldn't put into words

Only thing they needed to change in a remake was just making it easier to get seals. This would improve this game 10 fold but of course they didn't do that

That glosary option in dialog would had come in handy in Final Fantasy 13 just saying I literally started playing like a dragon and I feel like I shouldnt watch this video, will comment in a few months if the series grabs me(so far in chapter 2 and is great)

For the Brawler style, I have seen lots of people complain about it so I have decided to collect the data for myself and oh god it's really bad. The most amount of damage you can deal without the loincloth ranges between 14-20 and with all best damage upgrades which you have to grind for, it can go up all the way to 40, at least from my testing. The Tiger drop will deal from 300 to 400 damage being the strongest tech out there. But in all honesty, do yourself a favour, get the best electric katana, golden pistol or craft the quickest firing one with all damage upgrades and just complete the game like this.
@MugdhaMahdiShams Жыл бұрын
You can still make Brawler great. I think it's the only style which has "greater damage boost" seals or something which can go up to 65% each and they stack. I got like 4-5 of these on my armor pieces and now Brawler annihilates enemies faster than Swordsman ever could.
@DDayDark Жыл бұрын
When I played the Japanese Ishin on my PS4 the game seems to be about the same, at least what I'm seeing from your review, as I have a low desire to play the remake, other than the odd changes on the character changes that's all I see that is out of place. Also I Don't understand criticism on trooper cards as this was present in the OG game, and your phrasing makes it seem like it was something added, unless they changed some of the skills on the cards.
@Ticketman99 Жыл бұрын
Wait...you can use the Trooper Cards in story content and free roam instead of only the Shinsengumi dungeons?

The game was alright. It seems super grind heavy but once you get enough ryo to bet big in chicken races, then it becomes pretty easy. But yea, I think I enjoyed every other Yakuza game more.

I may be weird, but I like brawler cause of its weak attack. I haven’t finished it yet so i don’t know if it gets stronger, but beating bosses always makes me feel fucking rad absolutely destroying them with the style. Other than that though there really isn’t a reason for using it I’ll admit.

@MugdhaMahdiShams Жыл бұрын
It's not awful. With some work, you can make it stronger than the other 3 styles. The equipment I have makes Brawler do more damage than maxed out swords at least.

Overall I enjoyed Ishin but not as much as I thought I would. The side activities were great and I loved the characters however the main story got quite confusing at times (did like learning about the time period though) . The combat was also a bit of a letdown in my opinion and I didn't like how upgrades worked (0 and Kiwami definently improved the skills wheels). To me it was also way too grindy when it comes to crafting new weapons and I honestly couldn't care less about the dungeon mini game. After finishing it I decided to finally try Kenzan despite the language barrier and was quite surprised by it. Despite It's age I enjoyed it much more than Ishin. Combat felt more satisfying, upgrading weapons is much more straightforward. The game's map was also suprisingly varied with many different locations. Out of the two samurai spin-offs I definently prefer Kenzan however I also got a copy of the original Ishin so I'm curious to try it out and compare the two versions.

Can confirm that investing in Brawler is an extremely disappointing waste of time, effort and skill points. Even when maxing it out, the only two useful skills you unlock from it are the style cancels and the extremely forgiving omni-directional parry that makes you invulnerable for a bit. The rest range from downright pointless to slightly useful in niche circumstances - for instance, you have very easy access to knockdown attacks and grabs, which can be then be exploited for easy critical damage... But the damage itself is so low and extremely easy to surpass with any other style, there's no real point to do that unless you're clinically insane and want to challenge yourself. Troopers don't even do much, anything Brawler can do, every other style does better. It's really telling that there's a mod that doubles your brawler damage and it's still not even close to matching a fully upgraded Swordsman or even a good Wild Dancer.
@MugdhaMahdiShams Жыл бұрын
You need to get those brawler damage boost seals on your armor. The set up I've got makes it so that Brawler does twice as much damage as the final tier legendary swords.
