God, Sly cooper was an iconic part of my childhood. i remember getting stuck on the stupid submarine mission in the first world for so long because i was a child and was bad at video games
@yourcordialvermillionchapw2398Ай бұрын
It's been a long time since, I don't recall a sub level for now... But within my memory of the hardest thus far, had to be in Sly 3: The Pirate Sailing episodes and the Dimitri scuba diving in M's Island. Pirate Sailing became utter tedium trying navigate back and forth as is amongst the encounters there. Dimitri's controls were oddly difficult to navigate through all of the obstacles, even in quick succession (the worse was doing it AGAIN on my laptop, it's near impossible being confined with a keyboard at the time... That is, until one can just go to the options and change the controls just for said misson, it became a smoother progression of course). Furthermore content with the fact that I wasn't the only one with this slight perturbed feeling seeing Sly's ghastly scream being munched on ALIVE if failed, we all know homie made it through of course... Though he may be stuck in Egypt, thankfully in one piece with good experiences held on to... *Sly made it this far... It could have always been a worser fate.* *My first experience with the Sly Franchise, was actually by chance:* I remember it vividly being in my Middle School Era... Where an old friend since Elementary School Era, used to come by all the time up until they later moved (through all of our ups and downs, we didn't fully know that we were making the fondest memories through all of the struggle or regret that may follow... I still had a good time, the gift they gave me to remember them by while I sadly no longer have, that still would give me a faint heartache to remember). There's no expressing the amount of games we played, some of you have already played or heard and probably my old friend amongst the others who came by if they were still here, would still recognize (we once again met in the end of my High School Era, we didn't talk much but it was nice to see him again) we used to also interchange games, said old friend was also the first to introduce Ratchet & Clank, Up Your Arsenal is what I bought and at some point, that's when it happened... We were messing around with the buttons in the title screen... Eventually the screen went dark with oddly ominous text saying that we have triggered the demo of Sly Cooper 2, though a Demo, I for one was hooked with It's showcasing and have played it several times... In the exact era, the priority to get that game has become a subconscious priority... PS2 games have become obsolete consoles of the past to ever experience again... Not so much so, when you have the versatility of Flea Marketing to explore such appreciation (before the importance/acknowledgement of preservation, these are a start to such) I did find 2 then 3, later 1 in a Cargo Largo... The rest is literal history long enough as it is... There have been classic franchise's whom made their worthy comeback, Sly Cooper couldn't be more worthy for it by now... Yet not much since to tap into. Doesn't matter how it's done, make him come back in comic book form again or whatever else the way works, finalize or expand him rightfully. Out of topic of Sly, but related to what ensued the Anthropomorphic PS2 mascots, in case anyone else shows equal interest: It's all the more concerning to what happened to Crash Bandicoot thus far. What once were the foundations for each of these iconic characters, made his own memorable comebacks... Now being owned by Microsoft thus far... They aren't very good trackers as it's said, they canceled the Crossover with Spyro despite how awesome that would be. Much like Sly, Crash still has unbeknownst potential yet to tap into.

Something this video just made me think about was how Carmelita got captured in Sly 1. She never explains how or where she was taken, and neither does Clockwork. But remember, that Clockwork knows Sly. He at least knows his family well enough to know that he wouldn't leave an innocent person to die needlessly, but then why Carmelita? It's not like she could have known where Clockwork was and moved to intercept Sly, Interpol had almost no information on Clockwork at the time and Carmelita had been following you for the whole game because you were working off of her files to find the fiendish five in the first place; and if Clockwork just wanted to use Sly's sense of justice against him he could have just grabbed any random civilian as a hostage. So we can only assume that he grabbed Carmelita specifically and the only reason he would do that is because he knows on some level how Sly feels about her. How he knows this is never explained, but the fact is that he *knows*. He knows that Sly cares for her and chose to kidnap her because it would hurt him, because she would be the perfect bait. Not only does he know entirely too much about Sly but he also thinks nothing of using innocent people to get his revenge. Just that extra little sprinkling of horror on top of the nightmare that is Clockwork.
@calamityknyteАй бұрын
He hates the Cooper family so much that I wouldn't be surprised if he's that keenly aware of Sly's feelings just because he knows the telltale signs of when a Cooper falls in love. Man's watched so many generations of this family live and die he probably would.
@darksidekilla7Ай бұрын
You actually made me just have a thought. In Sly 4 the easter egg of Clockwork being all over the different maps means he's there watching the cooper member of that time, But also Sly. and who else time travels with them in that game? Carmelita. she was with us in that game and could have been watching the whole time they have their couples arguments. meaning he knew from the start that sly would have feelings for her specifically.
@mistermann416313 күн бұрын
@@darksidekilla7 Pointing this out is why I wished he was a Twist Villain in the 4th game and not Le Paradox. He's seen these characters in 5 points in his history yet he still dies in the end by the person he saw throughout time and spared when Sly was still a little kid over some ego he has in how he wanted to crush the cooper clan thinking Sly was gonna turn out like Le Paradox. He sees a group of time traveling people trying to destroy the cooper clan while successfully humiliating them with one of them being a engineering prodigy that could give him a more dangerous body than what he had in the 1st game, and nothing comes from that with him sitting on his butt.
@darksidekilla713 күн бұрын
@mistermann4163 see I get that but I feel like the biggest missed opportunity was for sly to team up with his own father. Because like imagine the finale chapter they get teleported back to France where his father is completing his greatest heist. And then paradox is there to try to stop you from correcting the time line only for you to run into your father. Just after sly was born! It would've been such an amazing send off to the series.

I always loved the sound design for the Contessa's flashlight guards. Both the iconic clomp-chack when they're patrolling as their crossbow-holding foot hits the cobblestone and lifts away again, and the scraping of the metal tip against the streets when they're quick-flying are both sounds burned into my memory from childhood, even if I didn't understand the association of what I was hearing and seeing. Ruby's section was definitely a MAJOR tone shift that made me feel uneasy. Super different from the bright colors and busy city vibe of the previous level. Also, the music changing the overall tone? Bentley being worried about some giant creature, and you, the player, being able to FEEL it through the controller if you have Sly dip his feet into the water? Holy moly. And the final section of the entire game... The whole cutscene revealing the final member of the Fiendish Five *still* gives me chills whenever I replay it. It's soooo good!

As that chapters heavily about Sly coming to terms with his family and their ego, Dr M being a monster created by the Coopers own ego and his minions all being mutant animal hybrids is quite the climactic final chapter. I mean Dr.M created some outlandish but also terrifying creatures that should’ve never come to be, like the angler fish and that whale fly

Caution: Massive paragraph from a massive Sly nerd with too much time on his hands incoming: One of the biggest reasons I adore the Prague episodes so much and especially Jailbreak, aside from the fact that they nailed the terrifying and oppressive atmospheres of them both and building up Bentley as a character, is just how deep and intricately the guards were designed if you really pay attention. Sure, it is easy to point out the clomping stomp sound the Vultures make when they walk and yeah that is definitely a point in their favor, but what a lot of people might not realize on their first or second time(s) around is just how much they act exactly like IRL birds combined with Prison soldiers. I mean think about it for a moment, when they "run" while chasing after ya, their "running" consists of them flapping their wings, when they are checking for sounds/intruders, they are moving their heads back and forth while also "saluting" with their left wing thus greatly hinting at the militaristic aspects enforced by the Contessa, they have that lantern draped around their necks for their methods of illumination due to having no hands of course in addition to that crossbow wrapped around their right foot/talon, their up close heavy attack is them swatting ya with their left wing, and their sounds are stereotypical squawks! Of course the Wolves are no slouches either. Their weapon is just their spiked morning star club, which, yeah is not nearly as creative as the three types of weapons/attacks seen with the Paris Rats, India Baboons, and Canada geese, but they make up for it with *their* attacks which consist of an uppercut, triple down slam, and a counterclockwise spin. These are, of course, very similar to the upper cut, jump cane swipe (jump then press square), and charged cane spin (press, hold, and release square) moves that Sly has which I am sure must have made Bentley feel very antagonized while going through Jailbreak for the first time trying to break Sly out. Not only that, but they howl if you lose a fight to them, successfully evade them, and/or when they are done checking for sounds/intruders, their running animation consists of them running almost on all fours with them using their club to support their right arm, and on spots/rooftops where they are idle and not walking around, they lay down on all fours while resting their heads on their folded arms and you can actually see them stretch just like wolves/dogs IRL if you happen to catch them first spawning in. My favorite guard though would have to be the Bats. I'm not joking when I state that the Bats are my favorite guard in the whole series, all of Sly 2, and as a secondary rooftop type. Copy pasting a comment from one of my own Reddit posts: "What I personally really love about the bats is/are three major reasons. One: the screech(er) variants are quite possibly my favorite megaphone/megaphone equivalent secondary rooftop guard variant in the whole game as I vehemently believe that their use(s) of the screech being used to alert their allies as opposed to a traditional megaphone, especially with it being based on real life bats' uses of echolocation, and having it be incorporated into the typical "megaphone call" animation shared with the Paris Frogs, India Ibexes, and Canada Mountain Goats all makes it (IMO) the most creative take on the megaphone secondary rooftop guard formula Sly 2 establishes for itself. Two: I believe the flyer variants are one of the better "non-megaphone" srg variants in the game as they use their brief moments of flight as an attack to lunge towards Sly in order to bite him, akin to vampire bats in real life. Not only this though, they can use their flight to their advantage(s) as (provided you have the camera facing where they are) they can use it to access areas and rooftops that the screeches and wolves cannot access/re-access in addition to completely bypass needing to jump on a spiderweb trampoline 8 times out of 10. That factor alone bumped them up from not exactly my fave but not exactly hated either to my second favorite variant, which is especially helped by the fact that I discovered that detail totally by accident when replaying through Jailbreak one time. And finally three: they have one of my favorite little details seen in the whole series in that on spots/rooftops where they are idle as opposed to patrolling around back and forth, they stand with their wings folded over them half-asleep (granted they still spot you if you walk within their immediate field of vision) and you can hear them breathing heavily if you sneak up behind them similar to how bats sleep in real life (minus the hanging upside down part of course) which greatly separates them from their contemporaries (the previously aforementioned Frogs, Ibexes and Mountain goats) which just stand in place plainly, occasionally scratching themselves, on spots that they are idle on. Those bits of realism, I think, seriously make the bats, along with the vultures and wolves, one of the more stand out guards in the series and in my eyes, they really make the Prague episodes worth going through as I think the bits of realism significantly add to the creepy and tense atmosphere(s) of both areas, especially Jailbreak." You can just tell that the Prague episodes were the ones that the devs seemed to have the most fun with working on because it just shines through with how deep these guards are with how much more realistic they were made and I adore it so much.

I'll admit that while none of the levels in Sly Cooper actually scared me as a kid, there were intense moments or things that kinda freaked me out. The serpent chase was always an intense one (I have a fear of being chased, so close shaves like that can get to me), but the freaky effects when the Contessa manages to hypnotize you... the way Sly can do nothing but sway and slowly stagger around and the background swirls around you was SO freaky when I first got hit by that attack. Every subsequent time she'd pull out that animation of her using the eyes, I'd go into panic mode, haha. On another note, so happy to see someone talking about Sly! I love these games so much!

I never really considered the idea of the bat and wolf guards being brainwashed by the Contessa, but it makes sense, especially considering that for Murray's prison brawl mission the idea is that he's getting into a fight with other prisoners, who happen to be the same bat and wolf guards. On the topic of seemingly innocent cartoony PS2 games, I feel obliged to mention Neopets: The Darkest Faerie. There are several unnerving locations in that game, as well as many, many creatures/enemies that are terrifying (like the loud roaring drackonacks). A lot of it comes down to the sound design or how clunky the gameplay can be, as well as how enemies literally spawn out of the clouds from the midpoint on. Even still, Castle Sewers, Shadowglen Woods, Bogshot Swamp, Werelupe Woods, and the Black Knights castle are terrifying locations to explore. I'm sure there's more I forgot to mention, but I think there's plenty there to check out.

As a kid flashlight guards and the Contessa level were the things that scared me. You can't fight flashlight guards head on, have a gun where all you characters are melee focused, and they don't flinch when being hit like the other enemies. Starting off with Bently in the prison level was a scary/hard thing to do since the "safest" route if you were bad at stealth was the rail line which still had a train on it. And sly doesn't fair that much since climbing up feels like there's not as many poles or platforms for you to get up on roofs that I've noticed when doing the code collecting and lightning mission.

The clockwerk Easter egg is so important to me. I see it as this: clockwerk isn’t stalking the cooper ancestors, he’s hunting sly across time. Maybe the jealousy for the cooper clan stems from sly and his father, which is why clockwerk forms the fiendish five. He emulated how Sly’s father worked, and defeated him using his own philosophy. So it’s really satisfying when sly defeats him the same way, with his team.

Loved the theme for ms Ruby's levels. I enjoyed all the Sly games havent played thieves in time yet though.

The scariest mission in the series for me was the underwater level in Dimitri's recruitment chapter. The sounds used for video game sharks still sometimes get me. I would quick swim back to the tunnel that separate the two basins. Until adulthood, it would take me a half hour because I was always on the defensive, needing to find their swim patterns before I'd get close enough for the harpoon to affect them. It felt like such D*** design decision to make the tiger sharks require two shots, so each tiger will rush the player.

My favorite levels as a kid were the snowy ones of Panda King’s overworld, and Jean Bison’s Iron Horses in Canada. Specifically because they were both a breath of fresh air from Miss Ruby’s Swamp and the Contessa’s Prison/Mansion

Man I loved this series growing up. The contessa levels use to terrify me as a kid, especially the first one. Took me a month to beat it 🤣. Overall I enjoyed your video on the horror element in the sly games. Also your Gorgonzola comparison threw me off, now when I return to the first game I’m just gonna think about chowder.

ooOOoooh man the Contessa keeping Sly in 'the hole' and 'psychologically reforming him' and the way *she uses Murrays rage against his friends and torturing Carmelita always messed me with me so bad as a kid.

I remember my time with the supernatural sections. Mz. Ruby was more fascinating due to how far the game played into her brand of mystical prowess and made it normal for her guards (the giant serpant was a plus). The prison was a total tone shift from a colorful game into a a dark horror. What really scared me about that level, music and atmosphere aside, was how there was no consistant safe way to get around stealthily as Bentley due to the wolves that pose as statues.

Good to know i wasn’t the only one who was frightened playing this game as a little kid during those stages

Awesome video man, I love Sly Cooper. I kinda forgot how scary the games can be. I only played through 1 fully when I was younger, and rented 3, but I have the Sly Collection for ps3. I really should pick up the collection again and play through all three. Ms Ruby's level still gives me scares though, there's something about swamps that just mess with me. That Sly 2 level looks awesome too, has like an art deco look like Batman The Animated Series.

i only first played through the original ps2 trilogy at the start of this year but i remember being super blown away by the eerie atmospheres of sly 1 and 2. i was a very timid kid so i don't know it i would've been able to beat the games if i played them when i was young, but i honestly probably would've still loved them either way - its a lot of fun seeing what i missed out on!

Hearing that child in world 4 saying “mooooommyyyy?” Every 2 minutes freaks the shit outta me as a kid. The haunted castle level I mean

What really haunts my nightmares are the minigames from Sly 1. They were all so hard to me when I was a kid. Ugh. Lol

The deep diving mission with dimitri in sly 3 scared me so bad and was always my least favorite part of replaying the series. The sharks just turning on a dime to come charging at you always got me

I still remember being about 7 years old and being terrified of that one level in the swamp location, where a giant worm/snake chased you with the camera facing backwards toward the player. That shit had me so scared i made my dad beat the level while i closed my eyes lmfao

Im pretty sure I blocked the creepy parts of the games growing up and never really saw them as scary until you revisited the Mz Ruby level... yeah, everything about it is creepy as hell lol. I do appreciate how much detail is in the environmental storytelling of her level too, the beast being locked behind the gates is the best one yet

Gods the music in miss ruby’s area is so cool to me. I would just stand there and listen for minutes. This track never really scared me but quite the opposite. I absolutely loved it as a kid.

Mz. Ruby level actually scared me as a kid. Almost didn't want to beat the game because of the music constantly in the background.

As a kid I was scared of the huge snake in the waters during Ms. Ruby's stage. I really hope they make another Sly game, Thieves In Time was so disappointing

You missed 2 major ones for me. In Sly 2 episode 3, Rajaan used to freak me out in his intro. This would add up to his watermelon mission with Bentley. It still makes me leary running up to him and then running away. Then there is also the horror if you get caught. "Viper in the grass" has been ingrained in me. Then in Sly 3, the mission where you dive for the cannon upgrades. The sharks always geeked me. I dont like things charging me. If you want recommendations, A Hat in Time has a great spooky themed world that I know got some of us like the Beast.

You know it just occurred to me that clockwerk could have returned to the present by hitching a ride on the Time Machine the gang travels in. He is the most compelling villain in the series and it would be a neat way for him to return.

I wish you had talked a little more about Clokla and Neela. The only thing in Band of Thieves that creeps me out is her! She drops the Klaw gang lead, betrays Sly, frames Carmelita leaving her to be brainwashed, fucks over the Contessa, happily helps arrest the rest of the Klaw gang, KILLS Arpeggio, was more than ready to have a disco hate party that would've left thousands of people mentally damaged, and finally leaves Bentley permanently disabled! She had planned to use the Cooper gang, the Klaw gang AND Interpol from the start and played all parties involved, masterfully. As for Clokla, the metallic sound of her wings flapping, her screeches, and her glowing eyes that spotlight you as she visibly flies around the level. It's like she could swoop down and finish the job Clokwerk started at any time! Prague on the other hand is my absolute favorite out of the trilogy games!
